A NEW INDUSTRY FOR HOOD RIVER Tbo Hood Hiver Artificial Stone Co. is the latest, enterprise to las numbered among our industries. E. vV. Paarz, a Pennsylvania man and an expert in the manufacture of con crete work, believes Hood Hiver is a good field for the manufacture of this product and has established a plant hero. He has associated with him in this venture, A. W. and W. L. Mar klo, who will assist in looking after tho atlairs connected with the busi ness, it is tho intention of this coin pauy to manufacture oonorete chim ney blocks, foundation and retaining walls and also sewer and Irrigation pipe. Mr. Paarz tolls us that no finer ma orial can be had than concrete for chimneys; that there is absolutely no danger from defective flne and the general appearance la more sub stantial and finished than when con structed of any other material. The blocks for foundations are also band some in appearauco and are noted for their strength and durability. In re gard to price as compared to other materials, Mr. Panrz informs us that it will be produced at less expense to tbe consumer than either brick or stone, and that this work bag become quite popular in tbe East. Tbo chimney blocks can be laid by tbo purchaser, as it requires no par ticular skill for this part of the work, aud the company will instruct all pat rons how they should be laid, or a man from the plant will Jay them at a nominal cost. The pla it Is located on tbe Oregon Lumber Co s. mill site, near the terry landing. Temporary quarto's have been erected for the present, but it is the purpose of the company to en large and erect permanent quarters as soon as possible. Mr. Paarz and W. L. Markle and are now engaged in getting out a few samples which will be placed In a prominent location in town, where all may examine them, as there is no work of this kind in town. The plant is of course iu its infan cy, but if onr people foster it a little it will no doubt develop into a flour ishing establishment. All persons desiring this work done should leave their orders as soon as possible, as the plant at present is somewhat hampered in tbe temporary quarters aud therefore more time is required to Mil orders. The foundation blocks are hollow in order to eliminate ali dampness, aud tbe process through which they are manufactured gives them great hard ness and stability. Three designs are made plain, panel faoe and rook face, and when pluced in position and pointed, present a veiy attractive ap pearance. T he memtars of tbe new firm would be pleased to bsve any parties inter ested in this kind of work visit them at their works and see bow the pro . duct is manufactured.
