We have heard no objection on the part of liood Kiver growers to thil move ment, and while it in understood that there are a few residents at Mooter who have not fullen in with the pro joot, they have not remonstrated agiuiiHt it. The only objection so fsr met with bag boon from the railroad company, who fear that cliunging the name to oinelhiiig that 1b bo much like iiood Kiver 1m liable to create confusion with shipments of freight consigned to these places, aud bIho among the passengers who are likely to alight at the wrong dohtinntion. The iailroad company hua not mado any lormal compluiut, but him simply culled tun attention of the circulators of the pe titiou to tho facts. The petition will, of oourne, have to be presented to the general post olllce departinout and receive its sanction. A petition was rocentl ' presented to the city fathers of The Dalles ask ing that tho bars be let down sllghth in order that the employes of tho new railroad across tho river might be al lowed to spend their leisure timi worshipping at the shrine of Fortun atus and Jtacchus without fear of be ing lodged in the calaboose. Tho pe tition is as follows : To the Honorable Mayor and Council of Dalles City : Gentlemen : We, the undersigned citizens and taxpayers of the city uumlily petition your honorable body regarding a few privileges we deem at this ti ne to be au advantage to all, especially to the merchants. Owing to the fact that there are a largo num ber of laborers employed at this time adjacent to our city, and knowing that they are great speuders and sup fiortera of mercantile trade, believe t Is best to allow them reasonable sway. We, therefore, pray you, for a time at least, to be moderate in your rulings of alight vices to which such a class are generally addicted We trust you will carefully cousider these suggestions for which you will receive ourjthauks. The members of the city council did not, however, take kindly to tho ides and delivered a knockout blow that was heard as far away as Portland, anil yea at I'endleton, also. Xlie fol lowing is a summary of the rotiuds: Whereas, It appeared upon investi gation that the signatures of some ot our leading business men to said pe tition were obtained through grossest misrepresentation and deception, and the real purpose of said petition is to iuduce the council to rela the en forcement of laws governing the city, and especially laws relating to gam bling and gambling devices, therefore be it Resolved, That the council of Dalles City expressly condemns and censures lu severest terms the motive which led to the circulation of said petition and tuo manner In which the signa tore were obtained thereto. Aud be It further Resolved, That the council is unan imously opposed to permitting gam bling in any form within the city, aud that persons who qrigiuated aud circulated the petition are advised that the purpose of the council is to see that all laws, and especially those against gambling, shall !h stiictly euforced.
