o V. t o 'O1 rOOD RIVER GLACIER ifttmcd every rlbursdy by AK1MUK D. MOB. Publisher. Tonni ol subicriptloo 11.60 a yea (Hi sld In advanca. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1905. K. OF P. SOCIAL WAS A SUCCESS SEXATOR HITCH ELL. The death of Senator Mitchell re lievos a situation that bag become painful in the extreme After many yean of service in the Miriest legisla tive body in the land Le fell to dis grace. Whether knowingly or not Is a mooted queHtioii. However, no matter what Senator Mitchell' shortcomings may linre been there is no denying the fact that he has been mot closely Identified with the progress and development of . the great state of Oregon, More than any other one man he has worked and acoompished much for thli com monwealtb. lne adage "Spare me Iroin uiy friends" has perhaps neve" bad a bet tor illustration than in the unfortuu ate career of the (lead statesman. Not that the late Senator lacked friends for they were legion and are now. But bo also had false frieuds, Friends who stabbed him from be- , bind and betrayed blm for the trad I tlonal thirty pieces of silver. All great men have this kind of frieuds. To steer a safe course amid such sur roundings requires the master hand, the undlinmed eye and the iron nerve. Sonator Mitchell had long since passed the prime of life and wag verg ing on the age of three score and teu. Weak, debilitated and uutlt, the strug gle was too severe and be gave way to the temptation that ruined him. Death's kindly hand lias relieved an old man of bis troubles, ills bitter est enemy must now be placated. There Is no reaching beyond the grave and it would be well If those on this side of it contemplated on this fact more often. Miss Lydia Williams, aged about 13 years died last week at JlUNiirn. Mis? Williams had been ill with typhoid fever for sometime but was oonvalea oing and was considered out of dan ger. On December 4th honrt disease suddenly developed and she passed away. This dread disease it would seem Is a family allllction, as Miss William's father died 18 months ago irom me same cttuso. The funeral, which was In charge of Undertaker Nichols, of this city, was held Wednesday, December 0, at White Salmon, the services being conducted by tho Rev. Mr. Lewis in the church at that place. Mrs, James ('rmwn. Mrs. James Crosseu, a sister of Mrs. Wank Cram, of this city, died at Her home in Oakland, Cal., Satur uay. Mrs. (jrosnen. who was nevor in very robust health, succumbed to lirlght s disease, from which she had been a so It ere r for some time. As Auburn Story, which was ber name before marriage, Mrs. Crossen was very well known at Tho Dalles and was a grout fuvorlta nud highly esteemed by all who knew her. Mrs. Crossen who visited here last summer was In very deliuate health at the time, and it was known thou that she could not- live - long. liesido her mother and Mis. Doors open ut 7, and the curtain rises at 7 :JU sharp. Waucoma Lodge, K. of P., held a very enjoyable eiitertaiumei.l and so cial at its rooms Tuesday evening. About 150 members and thiir friends were present and the time until the entertainment feature of the evening was put on, was spent in conversation and in renewing old acquaintances aud making new ones. V. O. Brock, who acted as natter of ceremonies, then announced t ml the pre gram which had beeu felectet. by the committee would be rendeito and stated that it was au in 1 rc mptu one add hoped that it would pkise those who were prosont. The first number was the singing t f tie national ode of the order, abicl was followed by a prayer by 1 lof. Ev erott. The refct of tho program was Ht follows: Duet "Labor Watch.' W. A. Isenberg, V. 0. Hiock Recitation "An Old Sweet heart of Mine," biJej Professor V. 1 retl Sona "Nobody Loves Little b. ' Mbs Lillian liroek Rocitation "H twixt and lltttMio" Mlis Florei.ce St iteii Song "Absence" Mrs. SJetteu Reel ation-"Wanted a Minister" A. C. Stevens Cornet solo Selection from 11 Trovatore B C. Brock Miss Cooper acoompaaist Violin solo "Traumerie" Prof. McCalley Mrs. l)n ml )le accompanist Song "Charity" Chas, Clarke An amusing and entertaining part of the program was the impersona tion of a son of the forest called "In dian John," by Captain Coe. Mr. Coe addressed the assemblage in the language of the Yakiuias which was interpreted by Dr. Jenkins. The nature of his harangue was a story ol the massacre of tho whites at Cascade Looks during the Indian wars and the dual rescue of the remainder of the party by the Hood River Tribo. The numbers were well rendered and en joyed by all. After a short Intermission stipne.' was Berved, the Invited guests being seated first. The supper was very bountiful and good and the members and their guests did ample justice to it. After the party bad satisfied the In ner man, Mr. Krock, who acted as toast master, called on several geutle- inoi) to respond, which they did very entertainingly. W. A. Isenberg told how ne became a knight; Kev. Mr. Uilinore spoke on the significance of modern knighthood; K. R. Bradley told what tho duties of a knight were and what the orders stood for as be tween man and man ; and Dr. Jenkins responded to the most popular toast of all the ladies. Snortly afterward the guests depart ed having spout a very pleasant even ing anil feeling very grateful towards the "Knights." Rate-Making Commission 11 a Political Factor. The rate-making power that It is sought to grant the Interstate Com merce Commission to make rates af ter hearing upon complaint," so said William Sproule In an address before the Commonwealth (Hub of Culifornia, "would carry a still greater power, tor any one can bring complaint. That complaint can be made sufll- oieutly broad to include hundreds of articles or thousands of rates. Upon hearing by the Commission these rates could all bo fixed and the readjust ment of all the rates of the country could readily depend on an arbitiary number of hearings or Investigations determined, or perhaps predetermined ny trie commission. "Under our political system It Is not hurd to conceive political ques tions arising under which tho Inter state Commerce Commission might become a controlling factor In a polit ical campaign through the exercise by a forceful President of bis on n oouvictions in gen end rate reduction or adjustment by -executive pressure upon the Commission This effort might be conceived and the nressure exerted alike in tho spirit of altruistic patriotism or of patriotic p lltical ueaossity, but in either case would amount to seizure of the railroad rev enues and impairment of their valuos to meet political ends. "hi the case of tho Panama Canal Commission summarily removed by a President Impatient of delays and anxious for result, we have seen what may lie done by the exerolse of Presi dential prerogative, and what has hap pened with the Canal Comimsslou can happen with tho Commerce Commis sion." No Prisoners In Jail For Three Days. The inhabitants of the county have beeu keeping pretty quiet these days, a fact which is evidenced by the ab sence of prisoners in the county in stitution. The Dalles Chronicle com ments on it In this way: For three small days the county jail was empty, during which time the whitewash was used in abundance and a general renovating took place. Then It was so clean that boarders oouldu't stay away from there, aud two prisoners are now con lined there in a waiter who got iuto trouble at the Dee Hive restaurant, aud a man assaulted a Chinaman.
