AUXneROFHEJUXH - E : AtsolatrlPuro imm SUBSTITUTE A Creem of Tartar Powder, freo from alum or phoe phatfo acid ROYAL BAKING POWDER CO., NEW YORK. GREAT RESOURCES OF WASCO COUNTY The following tribute to tbe advan tage! and resources of Wbhoo count; appears in tbe November lnwie of tbe Hoard of Trade Journal pubjlnhed at Portland. This in one of tbe oldest oonutlei In the state, and formerly extended from the (Janoade mountain to tbe Kock leu, ana trom tne uoiumuia river on the north to the boundary line nf California Hnd Nevada on the south. Tbe county now eomprinea about 2iU) square nuloH, and extouds, on the northern boundary, from the Cattcaile Liocm to tne moutu or the UeKoueU. dintunoe of about CO miles. This Is along tbe Hue of the Columbia river, . which Is tbe boundary botween Ore- Son and WaHhington, and the 0. It. k . Co.s' railroad follows tbe rlvnr . from tbe wostorn to the eaHteru boun dary. From the nortbwe tern ooruer to the sontheaHtern part 20 miles be yond Antelope on the John Day rivor Is a dixtauco of 120 mllea. From north to south the county is 60 miles in length. 1 The western part is very mountain ous and heavily timbered, and for lumbering interests Is seldom sui- assed. Forests of fir, spruce, pine, arob, cedar, and other native growths abound iu lurge quantities. The fruit belt comprises that por tion along the viilleys of Hood Uivor and Moxior Crook aud on tbe uplands bordering on Chmiowlth, Mill and other creeks near Tbe Dulles, although good fruit has been raised in nearly every portion of tbe country j but the lands mentioned are almost complete ly devoted to the growth of orchard fruits and berries. The wheat belt extends from Tho Dnllos south to Dnfur, Kingsloy Tygh Ridge Juniper Flat, Waniio aud be yond. Tho southern portion Is Itirgn ly devotod to sheep aud cattle pas ture. s Tbe climatic conditions cannot be excelled anywhere on tbe continent. In the wiwtoru pert the raiufall Is heavy, while further etigt it is union , less. On Itlm elevated plateaus and plains it is coldni than iu the western part or along tho (Jolumhia.JJosohutes, llood Iiiver and John Day; but in winter the thei mouioter rarely reach es zero, or in summer ranges above 100 degrees. One peculiarity is the prevalence of Chluuok winds iu win ter, which cbiinges tbe temperature In a few hours, aud molts the snow much quicker than rain. Wbhco county invites homeseekors to locate within its bordors. it wauts active, uptodato farmers, who are sat lstlnd to own a reasonable sized tract of land, aud who will thoroughly Ini prove the same. It wants men with large capital, who will invest In mills aud factor ies, and who are willing to expend their mouoy for the development of natural resources. It wants gnrdenera aud fruitgrow ers, who will develop small tracts of the most productive laud ou earth, It wants the iuvestor who will es tablish breeding farms for tine cattle, horses, sheep, swine and poultry. It also wants laborers, farm bands, women who will do bouse work, iu tact niorit anyone who is willing to work can tlnd employment iu the liood Iiiver valley. : Iu short, it wauts ten thousand more people who will make their homes here, and who are willing to help develop the now dormant. Wasco county can offer to the In dustrious man or woman many chanc es to better his or her condition in life, and to the oupitalist rare oppor tunities for tbe investment of his money, which will bring him large returns. 94 of these are for gold medals, four ! for silver and 12 bronze. Oregon exhibitors secured 114 wards, 43 gold medals, 24 for silver, 14 bronze aud 33 diplomas of honor. able mention. While the Northern Paoillo is ship ping men for the north-hank road from points as fur east hb Kt. Paul, the In flux of laborers is proving benolk'lal alike to other roads having work in progress, for It Is said fully 60 jer cent of those imported are continu ally moving from turnip to camp. The warmer weather found ou the Hue of the Lewiston-liiprnla couuec tion Is inducing men to leave the north aud go there at less wages, and while at Ibis suas in the iicoomnioila tions at railroad camps are uot of the most desirable, a few of tho proverb ial "flout ors," as t hoy are termed in the parlance of the road, are "beat ing" their way back to the city to spend time checks which show only a few days wero given to manual labor. Reports have resobod l'nrtlaud that there were but 200 meu engaged on the Uiparia-LewiHtou liuo, but at tho O. H. it N. otllce It is ltiiirned the con tractors, Krickson A l'eterson, have a force of at leant GOO graders, and this number is belug oontinuiilly In oroased. The many opportunities ott ered for mill work, iu logging camps and other kinds, nbich are regarded as more alluring for the winter months, have made it difficult for the contractors to obtain all the help needed, but with the opening of spring the eastern importations will become heavier, and It is expected the short age will be overcome. In Oregon and ashington it is pre dicted fully 50,0(10 laborers will tlnd employment ou railroads during the coming year, aud uo doubt the big cities beyond tho Kockies will be called on to furnish most of tbe army.
