MUST CLEAN YARDS
OR SUFFER ARREST
The subject of overflowing ceaspools
and ill-kept back Tarda In the busi
ness blocks came before toe council
Monday niiiht. Councilman Moe of
the health committee repotted that
Dr. C. 11. Jenkins had entered
omphiiiit of an overflowing cesspool
from the Maroellus cottage onO street
nnd asked the council for relief.
Councilman F.arly asserted tbat
there were frequent remarks by clti-
zenn of the town that the council
should do something to keen the sew
ers clean, and as all parties had been
untitled often enough, he deemed it
time that the marshal made arrests of
those parties who continued to main
tain nuisances w hich endangered - the
health of the community. Other
ineiiiliers of the council were of the
opinion that examples should be made
iu this manner. If uo other method
was effective.
The unclean ootid ition of other sew
ers and back yards was discussed and
Mayor lllowers concluded the author
ity to abate such nuisances rested
with the board of health, which has
full power to act.
The sewer committee baa struck a
snag, and it must be two weeks before
a complete report can be furnished.
According to the amended city char
ter, Engineer Paget must prepare a
description of the boundaries of the
sewer district of the city. No lot or
position of lot which cannot be
drained by the proposed sewer system
cannot be included within the district
to be assessed without Invalidating
the entire system. After consultation
with Attorney Wilson, the sewer com
mittee at once secured communication
with Kngineer Paget, who will com
pinto his work of running the, botin
daries befote the next regular session
of the city council.

Fought at Antletaiu 4!1 Years Ago.
Forty-three years ago last Sunday,
September 17, occurred the bloody
battle of Antietam, when Comrade K.
1). Calkius of Frankton lost his lug by
a rebel cannon ball. Calkins was a
member of the famous Wisconsin
"Iron llrigade," which came near be
ing annihilated during thia desperate
struggle.
"We hud the Johnnies licked that
day," says Mr. Calkius, "and Lee
would have been captured before he
could cross the Potomac, had the rest
of tho troops curried out their orders
as did our brigade."
Mr. Calkius is still one of the live
liest of tho Oraud Army boys in Hood
Kiver. Two years ago he purchased
tho Sliaulding three acres at frank
ton. which he has looked after him
self, and from the earnings of this
fruit farm has made sulllcient money
to pay for the land aud build a neat
cottage 'Mx'H'i, which is now about
completed. Last fall his apple crop
brought f.")00.

Hood Kiver held au apple fair,
Aud other fruits she showed;
Sonio garden truck was also there,
And sweet elder freely flowed.
The editors did also meet
Upon the self same day;
And it was a picture sweet
To see the editors at play.
The editors went to the fair,
To see the fruit so flue;
Hut when once they entered there
They quickly formed in line.
For just inside the entrance door
They heard a summons sweet ;
"Come, try our cider, drink galore,
Hood Kiver stands the treat.
Thore they stopped und there they
stood
Aud drank aud drunk and drunk
and drank ;
lining free, they knew 'twas good,
And each one filled his tank.
And now those editors will write
Of fruits from olf the apple tree;

None got past that cider free.
The above "pome" was written at
the apple fair aud editorial meeting
at Hood Kiver last year. It was the
intention of the writer to give it to
Mr. Moe. of the Glacier, at the time.
liut Hood Kiver cider had a peculiarly
exhilarating elfect, aud "pomes" and
various other things, including our
hotel bill, were forgotten.

of the upper valley are waxing green,

Hie Hoo1 Kiver farmers consider
the creamery business a paying one,
and intend by thia time next year to
have silos in readiness for storing
green fodder for winter feeding.

Come to Hood River 1 O, why don't

Where 'skeeters are scarce,

Come to Hood Kivor! If you can t

You'll And something bettor comfort
and health.
Where factories will grow when more

Where grados will be safer with a few
needful fences ;
Where you see Mount Hood, so fair
and so high,
With its cap of white snow resting
'gainst the blue sky.
Where flowers In beauty urn seen
spring aud full,
And never freeze stiff witli the llrst
windy squall;
Where uo stagnuut wutor is found on
the land,
Where a ride ou the Columbia is both
cheap and grand.
Where the trees keep their verdure
throughout the whole year,
And children grow up without so
much fear;
Whore ohurches and schools me keep

And marching ahead uo bullions in
the race.
So come to Hood Kiver! Oh, please
