Jessse Davidson is doing the carpenter work. Mr. Larwood will enter quite exten sively into dairying as a business. Hops are Free from Mce. ' The Climate and Crop Bulletin for tho week ending Tuesday, Septemlier 12, reports conditions throughout the state as follows : "Tho temperatures during the week were higher than usual and no rain fell, except a small amount near the immediate coast. Tho warm and dry weather caused late crops to mature rapidly, and Imp picking is now gen eral and prune picking has begun iu many orchards. No lice or mold is reported in the bops and the crop is turning out Letter than expected a row weeks ago. With another week or ten days of favorable weather the bulk ol tho hop crop will be safely housed. Prunes indicate yields better than last year but considerably less than a full crop. Threshing is now practically comleted aud the grain crop it is thought will about equal that of last year. Pasturage is very short and stock is losing flesh, esecially iu the dairy districts where the supply of milk is even less than usual at this time of tho year. Corn is doing well and tho crop of matured corn will lie larger than usual, if the weather con tinues good for a week or two longer. Potatoes badly need rain and this crop Is uneven, its condition being dependent upon the soil and the time of planting. Potatoes planted late on high land are the porest. Pears are plentiful. Apples are small in size and about half of a full crop of late varieties is indicated. P, V. Ileluricbs, reporting for Hood Kiver, gays: "Prunes are a fall crop anil of good quality, some nave been shipped ; third crop of alfalfa is satis- faoory and under sheler; potatoes yield well; young apple orchards will give a fair return but old trees are bearing light; clover and alfalfa fields alford good pasture." A member of the executive commit tee of the Open River association says another boat will be in commission on tho Columbia river above Celilo within a week to take the place of the sunken Jerome, and that the Jerome will be raised and put iu service very soon. The accident to the Jerome was hard blow to the portage road at a time when difficulty was experienced to get steamers to enter the up-river trade. But tho committee is not dis couraged and is working with in creased zeal to secure boats. The Jerome was making her first trip when she struck a rock and went to the bottom of the Columbia, at a point near where a similar aooideut occurred to the steamer Paul Mohr placed on the upper river about ten years ago. ROAD DOWN NORTH BANK N. P. Begins Active Operations GRADERS IN FIELD Start to Work at Carson Landing SECRET MOVES BECOME KNOWN tsrly Predictions of the (lacier are Being Continued by Recent Events Along the Col li in his River. With surveying parties nndconsruc- tlou gangs iu he field and right of way agents closing deals with the laud owners, the very air is charged with railroad operations on the north bank of the Columbia. The Glacier was the first paper in the Noithwest to give the news of railroad opera tions down the north bank of the Co lumbia, and its early predictions that the Northern Pacific is behind tho movements have received almost daily confirmations within tho past week. J The renewed activity lu different quarters now makes very reasonable the supposition that the work is to be commenced at once. Engineering offices have tieen opened iu Vancou ver, men and horses and tools have been shipped to the front. Late Sat urday night a train of 11 cars loaded with wheel scrapers, teams and equip ment for grade work, including a large quantity of giant powdor, was hurried ti Vancouver. The steamer Dalles City of the Regulator line, now owned by the Northern Pacific, was rushed to that point, aud spent all night loading from the cars. Early Sunday morning the steamer, containing four carloads of equipment, left for up river points. The cargo was distribut ed along the Norhern bank from Washougal to Cascade Locks. Will Iseuberg of this city, who was at Collins hot springs Sunday, says the steamer Dalles City stopped at that place in the afternoon and un loaded there a gang of men witli steel drills aud a camping outfit. Perma nent camp was established at Collins, and designated as camp No. 5. The man In charge of the party maintained a strict silence as to whom he was working for, but when Mr. Iseuberg conversed with him regarding the geueral conjecture that the operations were being oouducted by the Nor h- ern Pad Ho he had nothing to deny. Mr. Iseuberg says uiou with tools and camp Outfits were also landed at Stevenson, Carson lauding, (looks lauding aud as far up the river as Drano. Portland papers stated Monday that the Steamer Defender .had been char tered for conveying a party of sur veyors to White Salmon, but up to Tuesday morning the boat had not reached its destination. However, a gang of railroad men is daily expected to begin grading operations on the Lauterbaugh property just west of the White Sahnon lauding. Several of the laud owners there hold signed agreements with Northern Pacillo right of way agents that when tl.oy give a quit-claim deed to any proper ty, it shall be used for a right i.f way for a railroad. People of White Salmon have every assurance that active operations will begin there withiu a few weeks. A few of the farmers lu the berry belt have not yet granted rights of way. At Underwood, nothiug definite has been accomplished, but it is under stood that Captain Harry Ol-on lias granted right of way for $2( 00. There is an understanding hctuooti Right of Way Agent Upright and tho Menominee Lumlior Co. concerning the crossing of the mill mpaiiy's laud, as there is also with the govern ment lands where the fish butchery is situated at the mouth of tho White Salmon river. Efforts have been made all summer to keep secret the activities of the Northern Pacific, aud as soon as the O. R. A N. realized that something was doing, a force of men was thrown into the field below Cascade Locks with an effort to block the work of their northern competitor. The O. R. A N. owns a short piece of track at the Cascade Locks, which in early days was operated as a portage road. Efforts will be made now to prevent the Northern Pacific from paralleling (Continued on page C.) ft
