of the hast Side. Funeral servioes
and burial were conducted Tuesday
aiternoon at tne t'lue urove cemetery.
While Mrs. Johnson had been a sick
woman since last fall, her death came
suddenly. Mrs. Johnson was born in
Ohio, June 8, 1H47. Hho lived there
until 11 years old. when she moved
w ith her parents to Iowa. She re
maiued in that stute for 17 years, and
lived In Nebraska and Montana before
coming to Jlood Kiver. She was
married to M. V. Johnson In 1WK1. To

Mr. and Mrs. K. 11. Heath of WeBt

months old. Funeral services were
conducted Thursday afternoon at the

O. Kvans of the Methodist' church.
Interment was made at ldlewilde cem
etery.

years. Mr. Knutson leaves a wife and
one child. He was the sou of K.

July ), Clarence Jewett, aged 21
years, 7 mouths and 2!) days. .Mr.
Jewett was the young man who met
with the awful accident at Under
wood Inst week. While blasting
stumps, a cnarge of gravel and wood
entered his eye, completely destroy

He Hears the Howling Coyote.
After feeding on spring chicken and
otlier farm edibles last week at the
country home of W. O. Martin, Al
bert Anson Graham returned Monday

home, Mr. Graham says the lonely
howl of the coyote could be frequent
ly heard after dark, while the roar of
the Devil's Punch bowl, four miles
distant, ollered a rythm that alforded
pleasant dreams until the break of
day. when all farm hands are up and

Kosegrant & Kverliart have increas
ed their building on Jewett avenue,
with an addition in the rear. This
will afford more residence room. Mid
will give the store below n i re chance
for expansion. This firm l as seemed
a contract to make extensile improve
ments to the Williams i-toio building
at the falls. They will also paint ami
remodel the Carter hotel.
Dr. J. K. Schwartz, of Chicago is
erecting a neat cottage on the edge of
th bluff at the head of the stairs ci lin
ing up from the lauding A magnifi
cent view is here obtained. Dr.
Schwartz comes here for the benctlt
of his wife's health. He believes t he
climate of White Salmon to be almost
ideal.
C. II. Cromwell of Underwood dis
posed of 20 acres of his farm last week
to Maggie K. Hamilton of Oregon
City, who will move there with her
family. The laud sold for Wkki, the
deal being cnusumited by the Wl.ue
Salmon Land Co.
There are many strangers in Wi ite
Salmon these 'days. The cvtensir ad
vertising done by the White S 1 on
Laud Co. is thus bearing diiict, re
sults. Ferryman Dean says a few
days ago he moved in seven families
in six davs. That's tilling ui the
country at a rapid rate. I.very one
who comes here has ti good word to
speak for the country.
Dr. (iearhart is now a rogisteied
pharmacist, having passed the exami
nation with a claim of 21 at Spokane
last week.

The new building of the White Sal
mon Land Co. is being pushed iiiii-
idly to completion and will be ready
for occupancy in a week or two. 'Ihis
new building is iMxIKI in size and two
stories high. It stands on Die corner
of Main street and Jewell avenue and
Is well located for business. There
will bo two rooms below and four
ollice rooms up stairs. The rooms up
stirs and one room below will he for
rout when the building is finished.
A flro caught in the timber back of
the Thomas place Tuesday and burned
over towaid Frank Hunsaker's place.
The men wero all away from home
at the time and the women sent into
town for help. A large force of men
went out and by back burning sue
ceeded in confining the damage to a
string of fence and eventually putting
out the lint, though it was iinite near
the ouildlngs at one time. Mr. Jinn-
saker feels very thankful to those who
rendered the assistance in time of
need and w hen he was absent.
F. W. lialsiger brought in some ap
ples Tuesday morning jo be h nt down
to the Lewis and ('lark fair which w ill
no doubt attract attention. Thev are
of the Karly Transparent, variety and
are very largo and beautiful. The ap
ple display in the Washington build
ing Is magnificent, every part of the
state seeming to vie with every other
part of the state in the display of this
irodiict, but none can eclipse the
lickitat display In beautv. tnuilil v
and flavor of fruit, though some of
the displays take up a good deal more
mom than ours.
