Lyle has a very flourishing litte grange which is making steady progress since so many of the young peopu have joined ami taken an active part in its upbuild ing. June 17 the order gave a straw berry festival, when the ladies served ice cream, cake and strawberries to a large crowd of members and outsid ers. After a short program was ren dered, tho young folks played games until a late hour. The event was en joyed by all in attendance. Friday, June i'l, a special meeting was held for the purpose of initiating six candidates, two in the rl.st and second degree and four in tie third and fourth degrees. The new mem bers are: Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Hughes, Wright Dean, 11, J. Clark, Walter Curl and Mrs. C. Cieedon. After initiation the young people, not members of our order, were invit ed inside aud the hours were spent in dancing. An oyster supper was served to aril free of charge by the sisters. Several were heard to remark about the progress our grange bad made during this year, and were asking for application blanks. The grange is one of the very liest organizations that farmer's sou or daughter can join. The social and educational advantages are such that oanuot help elevating those who share Its benefits. To get some Idea of what our order is doing, one need only read tho reports of the seven teenth annual session of Washington state grange. The farmer ia beginning to see that only through organization can he accomplish what he wishes to do, and is making rapid strides towards that end. In the grange the young folks are taught to debate and discuss ques tions of vital interest to every Ameri can citizen, to take an interest in government alfairs, to know just what our legislatois are doing, and to ac quire that free and easy manner of talking before an audience. Our grange has mostly young people in all its oflices aud the responsibility imposed on them has not been uiis- placed We aro learning to "speak out in meetin" without turning the color of a full grown peony, and think that's pretty good for "beginners. " We contemplate improving our hall this winter, painting and repapering and furnishing new chairs and desks. If posssible, we mean to buy a piano, which will aid greatly in our literary entertainments. We give plays, soci als, contests, dances, and picnics, thereby furnishing public enjoyment to all. Our farmers' fair to be held this fall will no doubt stimulate the inter est greatly. A contest now in progress is caus ing some hustling among the mem bers. Here is the score of points: Attendance, 1 ; application for mem bership, 2; original essay of KXK) words or more, 1(H); reading, 30; re citation, r0; whistling a tune, 50; a banquet, 15; song by individual, DO. J Sides are chosen and at tho end of the contest the losing side is to treat tho winners to a supper or other en tertainment. In short, if a boy or girl, par ticularly the young people of the rur nl districts, wish to advance Intellec tdrtlly, he can do no bettor than join here, don't join expecting to sit in a corner, chow gum and look on, with your hands folded complacently in your lap expecting to derive griat benefit. You can't ride on the band wagon and receive any personal ben ell t, but got down and pull aud you'll see the difference In a hurry. Lyle will celebrate this yoar in a way to suit every one's taste. Tho socialists of the county will convene at the Lyle hall. A party from Gold eudalo have chartered a car and will I picnic in the grovo. Tho Sunday schools will unite and have a regular i country Fourth of July celebration at ; Pine Hill school grounds. In the j evening a big ball will bo given at tho I grange hall. Kvery one is Invited to visit our j little, village. P Sheriff Sexton Mav (Jet Reward, j The Dalles Chronicle. 8 When given a jail sentence in .
