considered it such a prolltahli! ex

WASCO COUNTY
AFTER PRIZES
"Waspo county is going after the
prizes at the Lewis and Clark fair,
and we intend to get them, too," re
murked Judge Lake, who was in the
city Friday. "O. L. Schmidt, super
intendent of the Wasco county exhi
bit, and myself were in Portland last
week, and the managers of the exposi
tion told us we have made the lies!
showing so far of any county iu the
state.
"Wasco county has nearly ;H) boxes
of apples that have been kept in
colli storage during the winter, and
the tioor space allotted to us, MO.xHi
feet, is the largest given to any coun
ty in the state. We have one of the
best Illations in the building, near the
entrance, and close to the state ex
hibit. There are no posts to obscure
the Wasco county booth.
"Yes, sir, we are going in to wn
the county prize, anil there is no
reason why we can't. We haven't
set aside any large stun yet, but
whatever it costs, the county is able
to pay for it. If it takes .:UHH or
.")Ul we are not going to hesitate on
that score. The money will he appro
priated as needed, and we do not in
tend to go into the matter in a half
hearted way. We intend to win, and
win we will.
"Hood liiver will of course have a
line exhibit, of fruit, and Sentaor
Johnson of Dufttr told me tho other
day the people of his city are en
thusiastic, and will do nil they can
to help make the Wasco county ex
hibit the best in the state. Tho Was
co Warehouse and Milling Co. will
send down an exhibit of Hour, and 1
suppose the Hood Hiver mill will do
likewise.
"One of the st liking features ot
the exhibit will be a pyramid of na
tural and scowered wool, anil wo have
been assured of a lino buck sheep to
top this olf. The pyramid will be
octagon in shape and inclosed with
glass. Wasco county is one of the
largest wool producing counties in
the state.
"When in Portland the other day,
Superintendent Schmidt and 1 se
cured 110 doen monogram plates on
which to display the apples and other
perisnanie irtms. 1'liiy glass gioiies
have been secured for exhibiting the
grain, and a large number of large
glass jars will be used to hold straw
berries and other perishable fruits. .
"I want Wasco county to win that
prize, and 1 don't care what part of
tho county puts up the best part of
the exhibit. It will all be Wasco
county, and will l.o a boiiellt to all
sections of the county. Kvery ex
hibitor will get the credit, for w hat he
shows there, and so will the locality
in which it is grown or manufactured.
There will not be such another oppor
tunity for exploiting the resources of
our country for years to come, and
we intend to take advantage of the
exposition for this purpose, and to
make a name for Wasco county anil
the people who live here."

April IS. The water question seems
to tie the general topin of I'lscnssion
with everybody. The sul'ject of the
contract litis been pretty well threshed
out on both sides, but we believe the
fanners are practically unanimous iu
their resulve not to sign this contract
as offered by the Kast fork company.
ino runners living lu the lower Kast
Side are practically unanimous iu
refusing to pay more than go an inch,
many of the leading orchardists de

At the meeting held Friday night
the committee w ho waited upon the
manager of the Irriagtion Co. report
ed that the manager declined to ac
cede to t he tern s of the resolutions
that were presented to him. A com
mittee of five wtis dually selected to
investigate the best plan of eontroling
their own water supply. The general
sentiment seems to favor tho organi
zation of a bonding district. W'e have
talked this- plan over w ith several uou
residetit laud owners and all have ex
pressed their willingness to blaco
their lauds under a bondii.g proposi

for a'iong term of years at a low rate
of interest it is believed an issue of
bonds amounting to tiH,tHii) or f'o.tHKI

readily command a premium on the
market.
Another meeting will be held at

when the committee will make its

by the way were only four years old.
Mr. Stewart says the Mosier peo

for Mosierites to make the wagon
