strenuous position, to say the least.

While a ipiorum of the stockhold
ers was heinK drummed up, H. L.Siuith
in a teii-mimito speech put forth
the Ktiod oints in arsenate of lead
as a spray for tho destruction of tho
codlin moth. Alter tho transaction of
ri ut i no business, A.l. Mason, retiring
president of tho union, iu a well word
ed talk, presented a number of recom
mendations pertaining to the markot
j iny of apples.
I .Mr. Allison contrasted the old way
I of pay ink' packers by the day, as was the
1 custom two years hko, and tho plan
j adopted last season of paying hy
j tho box, which proved in till cases far
j more satisfactory.
! The one thiiiK Air. .Mason believes
i would improve the elllciency of the
puck inn crews is the use of foremen to
I directly superintend the packing of
apples.
! lo place the members of tho union
on an ecpuil looting, there must be a
uniform price for tlie same apple, but
to insure this with justice to all grow
ers there must ho absolute uniform-
it y iu nindo and pack of that variety
i of apple.
"To iusnro satisfaction in the sale
of fruit f. o. h., the inspection of the
: flit it by tho buyer should be made at
lhi.4 end of the line," insists Air. Alu-
i son. "We can better afford the ex-
I pom-it of hriiitfiiiK buyers here than to
waste time wrauiliiiK with the buyer
j v. no endeavors to make out that the
fruit is not as renresented when it
j reaches his coininission house."

work of the association," urged Mr.
.Mason. Tho president advised an in
crease in the number of tho direc
tors, i!i elating if it was possible that
he would iike to have every member
i'l the association convene regularly
for transaction of the business of
tho union. "It will iniike you bet
ter union men," insisted the retiring
president.
Heretofore tho union charges for
shipping apples has been live cents
a box, tint Mr. Mason believes this
will havo lo be increased to six cents
, if tho system of foremen is installed
the coming season. "We wiii moie
than make up for the cost iu union
charges, " assured Mr. Mason, "in
I lie high prices obtained for our fruit.
It is better that we maintain tlie
union even though it cost us twice six
cents a box on each box of apples we
ship, The union is the salvation of
the apple business iu the valley.
Even the enemies of the organization
and our sharpest competitors admit
this fact iu private. "
.Mr. Mason helieves the union should j

ing ttiat one of the hest locations along
the lailroad has been assured the

"ihe union has gained much in its
knowledge of markets within the past
year, and during tho season just closed
was enabled to know where all largo
shipments of apples went that were
handled by the union. We even believe
it is possible to do business direct w ith
tlie retailers in tho city of London,
England, and are now in correspond
ence with one of the leading dealers in
that city, relative to shipments of
S;itenbeigs and New towns next
fall."
Mr. Ma -ion read letters in part, that
the union has received the past win
ter from English dealers regarding the
prices they paid for Hood Kiver ap-
pies, wliieh had passed Uiniu'li sever

In one of the letterx from the Eii

ARSENATE OF LEAD
BEST FRUIT SPRAY
At Saturday's nieetiiiiu of the Ap
ple (irowers' union, 1',. Ij. Smith, the
host known oichitnlint in the utato
of OreKon, HtroiiKly recoiniiieiided the
use of Kivenate of lead, Hd wprny
in conihiittinn the tutukch of the eod
liti moth.
Arsenate of load has l een eperi
mented with for four years, anil
wherever lined, is regarded tho liest
spray known. With three or four ap
plications it is said to he more effect
ive than other formulas iu eiht
or ten applications. Hy tho use of
t his spray, .Mr. Smith firmly helieves
the turn i is of the valh.y will he Hived
thoiit-'Hitda of dollars. .Many growers
have sinnilled their intention of Hiv
ing it a fair test the i'omiit siiuimer.
The strong points in favor of arson
ate of h ad as a spray for tlie condlin
moth are: Kase in operation; remains
Ioiik in suspension; there is nohtin
in the mixture to olotf the pumps; it
will not harm tender foliage, anil ad
heres to the fruit which is sprayed.
Arsenate of lead is a product of ar
senate of soda and acitate of lead.
Professor Stead mil u of the Missouri
experment station oilers thu following
formula: Arsenate of soda, 'lo.; Acit
ate of lead, l'ioz ; water i0 gallons.
The liowker Insecticide Co. of New
York sends out a preparation of arse
nate of lead in paste form known as
dispareno, and the Merimae Chemical
Co. of lSostou have a similar prepara
tion known us Swift's arsenate of lead,
lioth preparations have proved of
eiiual etliciency and give satisfaction
wherever used.
Professor (!. I (iillette of the Col
orado Argicultiiriil college strongly en
dorses the use t f arsenate of lead,
which ho states should he applied just
after the hlossoms fall, a second time
in one week or ten days. This is all
tho spraying he does, hut other an
thorities state that it third applica
tion should he made iihout the mid
dle of July, when the seeond hrood of
moth is hatched. A fourth applica
tion is made hy some orchardists.
Professor (iillette says the- strength
of the arsenate of lead varies from two
to six pounds to hKI gallons of water,
lie can see no advantage iu using
more than four pounds to the hund
red gallons. Fruit sprayed with this
strength will yield less than 4 per
cent of wormy apples with three ap
plications of the mixture, says tho pro
fessor. Mr. Smith read extracts from thy tes
timonials of fruit, men who have used
the arsenate of lead. One orchardist
who formerl y sprayed live times and
had 20 per cent of wormy apples, used
arsenato of lead tw ice in the season
and had less than two per cent of
wormy apples.

tural society was permanently organ

adoption of a constitution and hy

ciety will lie held on the Hist, and

STEAL GOODS AND
SET HOUSE AFIRE
F. i. Stuart, who owns a hill acre
farm on the road lu twcen this city
and Mosier, states that himself and
neighhors havo recently lost several
hundred dollars worth of farming im
plements and household goods, iu ad
dition to having attempts made at the
destruction of their residences hy
the hands of unknow n parties.
Mr. Htuart makes the announcement
in another column of a rW reward,
which lie will pay lor the arrest and
conviction of the party or putties who
are guilty. Mr. Stiiait is alii-ent part
of the time iu Portland, and while
gone a tew weeks ago, some one en
! tered his house, took out everything
but tho cook stove and bedstead, and
started a tire in tho center of the
kitchen floor, with the intention of
destroying the building.
The same attempt was made against
Peter Salt.inaii's house last week.
Mr. Taigeson, another neighbor, has
also sutfered loss of goods. Mr, Stu
art has some very good reasons for
placing suspicion on certain parties
and will prosecute as soon as he can
secure some n;oio evidence.
Mr. Stuart has cleared 15 acres of
land which lie will ret this spring to
apple trees, lie intends to improve
more of his land ami increase the si.'e
of his orchard at out 1
