I HOOD K1VER GLACIER, THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 1905. if WESTERN WASCO HAS 5400 PEOPLE THE VALLEY'S POPULATION 2500. (ilacler (lathers Material for Directory of the Karms Valuable Statis tics Herewith Presented. The population of western Wasco county may be aalely estimated at 6400. The G'acier gathered material for a di rectory of Hood ltiver valley lant um roer and estimates the population at 2500. ; With the population of Hood Klvcr city at 1800, Mosier country 500; Cas cade I-ocks, Viento and Wyeth, 400; the valley 2500, the grand total is 6400. Other estimates have placed the figures at 6720, but with the largo number of ingle men in the lumber camps, the Glacier would be more conservative in its estimate. The west end of Wasco county, in cluding Mosier, has an assessed valua tion of (1,071 ,015. There are 23 schools, employing 45 teachers. The number of children of school age at the time of the enumeration laxt February was 1879 , The number of square utiles in the west end of the county Is 540. When the Ulacier man gathered sta tistics last summer for the directory printed below he found 7000 acres of cleared land in Hood River valley. OI this amount 2800 acres are planted to apple treoaj 800 to strawberries ; 2(00 to hay. A greater part of the remaining 800 acres will be utilized for hay the coming summer and will later he plant ed to apple trees. The Glacier has endeavored to get the statistics as near correct as possible, but since last summer many changes have been made in land ownership, and if any one finds be is not enumerated in the directory Iwlow, or if errors have been made in his acrcago, the Glacier would bo pleased to have him notify the office at once that the correct figures may be obtained. This directory will be published at once In pamphlet form. The second in slallmeiit will appear next week. ' Absten F. It., 100 acres 5 apples, 5 hay, 6 garden, balance unimproved.
