The first house west of the log chute
on the blufl on the north side of the Co
lumbia is the home of A. J. Havnea, the
mun wno carries the mail to Chenowith
three days in the week, rain, shine,
wind or ralin. Mr. Haynea is making
TOnsiderahle improvement to the home
stead. But a short time ago there were
about a down large trees at the edge of
cliff Which hid the view of Mount Hood
from Mr. Haynea' house. He Bays his
wite rou Id n t rest until the trees were
removed, together they operated a
erost-cut sa', and while Mra, Haynea
was not an adept at this sort of exercise
she nevertheless persevered until . the
last tree obstructing the view was out
of the way and over the bluff into the
Columbia. Be-iidee a plucky wife. Mr.
Haynea haa a ranch that will Home
day bring him in a neat income when
planted to fruit trees.
A. J. Haynes, the Chenowith mail
carrier, brings word from Underwood
that workmen began Saturday building
the bridge over the White Salmon near
the month of the stream. This is the
bridge put in jointly by the two coun
ties, Skamania and Klickitat, for the
benefit of the settlers on the bead waters
of the White Salmon river. The" mon
ey haa been appropriated for buildine
the road, the slaehina of the roadway
haa already begun. Thib road shortens
the distance to Trout Lake and Camas
Prairie by four or five milea and gives a
much easier grade. Mr. Havnea aava
ths people of Underwood propose to fnt
in a dock, when this will become quite
an important point Mr. Havnea savs
he thinks it will be a good place (or the
location of a general merchandise ainre.
as a great deal of trade will drift to thie
landing that hitherto has gone to White

Residents of the hill appreciate the
new sidewalk running south on C street
from Sherman avenue. The city coun
cil made a wise move in allowing the
petition for this aide walk. Ae Council
man rrainer remarxea, sidewalks go a
long way toward making a town look
like a city. In the summer time it
keeps the pedestrians out of the dust
and in the winter time out of the mud,
besides making walking easier at all
times of the year. Money for aide walka
is a good investment. It adde double
the cost to the value of the property.
