6 HOODlEIVEIl GLAGIEE,' TIIUESDAY, JUNE 30, 1004. i, Petroleum Will-Lay the Irrot. , "Horn! River should place crude petroleum on the strt'Bts unci roads of the town mid valley and do away with the annual dust nuisance Ilia iieople licro have to contend with," savg Dr, J. K. Watt. ' . The diH'tor is In earnest on this mat tar. In conversation with the Glacier ' mini the oilier day he raid this manner of dust lying has lieen tried successfully in other states and there is no reason why it could not be employed here to (food advantage. " The exiiense is not so (treat as . most people naturally atippose. The crude petroleum can be Secured iii Portland (or 90 cents a bar rel, and it should not cost over 10 cents more Ireiitht on the steamers. . If others continue the agitation tor oil on tin. streets of Hood Kiver it- may bo possible to Bet enouitli interested to make the experiment. If it works else where, why not in Hood Kiver? Cali fornia cities use a great deal of oil. it is , said, and it nut only does away with the dust, but makes a better road bed. In that, country an application is said to In ft for a year or more. If it should prove satisfactory in Hood Kiver it would hardly be more expensive than the presut system, and Infinitely more satisfactory. . Nothing Ilea id of William Sliepard. William tthepard.whodisappenrcd from Hood Kiver the latter part of April has not been beard of since, Shepard the man who conducted a little grocery store in partnership with f rank tireeory opposite the 1'aik street school house last spring. Orcjrory withdrew from the firm shortly after opening the bus iness, A Portland paperglvlnjr an account of fihepuid's disappearance quotes his mother, Mrs. J. 0. Latonrelle, as saying he had 500 with him at the time of his disappearance. This is untrue, declares his brother who is now conducting the his store. He tnay have had (25 or $30 hut no more. 1 Hliepard was last seen on the 2ith of April, when be paesed throunh l.utonr ello and handed his fattier a nuts wj ing be would be back to spend Kuturduy ninht at home. He Is 27 years old and has a wife and one child. It is declared by his mother and his wife that there ' was no trouble between him and any of his relatives. "We fear that ho has been murdered . ami ronucu, his mother ts quoted as sayinit. "We know that he went to Portland to purchase some supplies for his grocery store, and we know that he ..reached Portland. Ho was seen to leave the train at the Union depot, but he Iihh not been seen since to our know luditc. "We have not learned of anything that may have caused him to leave Hood Kiver, and after careful investlea' tioii we I ave come to the conclusion that be met with foul play here," fitntu berries Pay In Texan. A Tyler, Texas dispatch In the Old. Ciko Paikor savs: . ' i'liy strawberry crop raised in and around Tyler this brought the (towers, in round numbers, $!i(),X)0. Forty cars wereshlped, of 504 crates to the cur. ' Express package shipments amounted , oi several hundred crates. The crop w hs very short, in nuiiiy instancei tint more than half a yield, there about 20(1 Hears of strawberries this year, which, will probably be doubled nextyoar. The average pield was about 100 crates to the acre, though some growers averred 200. P. Z. barton, living two miles east of Tyler, withered 1,100 crates from seven accrs but this whs exceptional, and lie lined an abundance of fertilizers. An avuriii;e. price for berries whs 2 and $2. 20 per crett), fancy averaging ju 20 and choice hriiiL'init 12. A ciate of berries coutaines 2 quarts. Every car was sold for cash, growers receiving their money as soon as the car bad been loaded and chocked up. Many buyers were here from the north. ' The second crop is now well iindor way, and many are real xing haudsom returns. H. W. Saale Kighards i leiiniiin, itenry Vokcnc, I.N. M'heulur, V. H. Wood, W. Flue Berries at White Salmon. A. W. Clark, writing in theOoldendale Agriculturalist from White salmon says: "Htrawberries here at White Halmon are just fine. 1 saw an item in tho Hood Kiver Ulacier speaking of (bo linext straw berries as being grown and -hipped from Hood Uiver, and as fao rip rior to any grown at other places.' 1 will say this is a very much mistaken idea a the strawberries grown in W hitebalmon are as fine in flavor, as large and nice as any grown there. The toil is good enough in Klickitat to grow these berries. There are a few growers on the land in White nalmon who are obliged to irrigate, and they ship their berries much sooner than the Hootl Itiver growers. i And the growers on the hill, too, are ahead of . the mentioned place. - Last Haturday, May 2H, from this neighbor hood there were 150 crates shipped, and only 7 from Hood Itiver. , From Under woods there was as many more, which as I know, were about 58 or 00, and were grown in Klickitat by Messrs. lliurn ton's. The strawberry is a very good crop here this year. The shipment from this side of the Columbia, in this immed iate neighborhood, Jane Sand 4, ran up-, wards of 600 crates, and thay are a fine i in flavor and size a any Hood Itiver berry ever seen, and a little sweeter. Ho say a Seattle buyer, i Mr. John Clarkson, 4 mile above, is shipping about ou crates per day, 57 yesterday. and would have had 7a it bi could have had them picked. . C, Thornton ami J. Thornton about 40 crates per day. Mr. J. P. Jensou from 20 toIM) crate per day. The cool weather on the hill holds the ripening back, rtill they are getting larger and tuier. As soon as the warni sun looks Unn them a little, strougur they will he rolling in more abundantly, Now, readers, do- you know where Hood Kiver got their great name of rais ing and shipping the finest fruit in this western country?. If not, I will say the first starter was front .White Salmon growers, Messrs. Higler, Moore, Byr kett, Engan, and a lew others on the Flat here. Blurting in the strawberry culture Mr. Jewett was the first in this part of the country iu strawberries and large fruit. Mr. Jewett is, as most of you know by reputation, a hardworking man who has made a beautiful and pleasant home on the hill. Once in the nursery business, be now has plated off considerable laud, is still selling flue residence lots and strawberry tracts. . White Salmon is growing nicely. In tiie near future this will be a beautiful place. The back ground to the South is shown nil with that beautiful moun tain, Mt, lliMul; (ben the foot hills; and this way, further down, the farm land and fruit growers' fields, dotted here and tiful picture, as boe tnentioiwd, far ahead of tha artist's bruah-aapeeially at nigh) when lit up, (he scene is grand. - (, . i - - - .Miss Ball 'I rttt-ita) , Kiwea by her pupils, w ait a great Sucees iu ever way,' and tha pleasant afternoon, combined wttn the beautiful lone rotes, added the enjoy ment of her guests. ' It wa a perfect program, and well rendered, and showed careful ' and conscientious training on the part of the instructor, and hour of hard work and endeavor on the part of the pupils. Mis Ball closed the afternoon by a beautiful rendition of one of JJeethoven's sonatas, which was enjoyed to the fullest extent by hot listeners."
