ENCAMPMENT A GREAT SUCCESS

account of poor health. By a resolution
of tbe convention the offices of ' dis
tant quartermaster-general and assistant
adjutant were consolidated, and J. .
Mayo, assistant adjutant-general, was
appointed to fill both offices.
The committee on' resolutions report
ed resolutions of condolence on the
death of Medical Director A. Yerington
of Eugene. A resolution was passed
reeom mending that the General Grant
log cabin, now owned by C. F. Blancke
of Missouri, and on exhibition at the
St. Louis fair, be sent to Portland for
the Lewis and Clark exposition. It is
understood that the owner of the build
ing is willing to have the cabin trans
ferred to Portland. It was also recom
mended that the department secure the
organization of a drum corps from the
posts of the state.

the people of Hood River for their
kindness and entertainment:
. Resolved, That by the 23d annual
encampment of the department of Ore
gon, Grand Army of the Republic, that
the thanks of this encampment are
tendered to comrades of Can by post,
Ko. lti, G. A. K.; to Comrade J. P.
Shaw, chairman of the committee of
arrangements, and to Canby Relief
corps, No. ltt, W. R. C, and to the
patriotic citizens of Hood River and
their families for their cordial welcome
on this occasion, for their generous hos
pitality and for their untiring and
successful efforts to provide for all our
wants, and make our visit pleasant and
long to be remembered as one ' of the
most agreeable ever held in this depart

B. F. Pike'of Wasco, who was elected
department commander for Oregon,
was born in Massachusetts in 1840. At
the age of 21 he enlisted in Co. B, 40th
New York, and served with honorable
distinction through the war with the
army of the Potomac. He wan in all
the important battles fought hy the
eastern troops, and in the summer of
18l4 he campaigned with Sheridan in
the Shenandoah valley. Before the end
of the war be attained the rank of first
sergeant.
In 1867 Mr. Pike came to Oregon and
settled in Linn county. Later he re
moved . tu Eastern Oregon, and for 20
years he has been a resident of Sherman
county. For three terms he served as
assessor of his county.
Commander Pike is a member of VV.
T. Sherman post at Moro. In 1892 he
attended the national encampment of
the Grand Army in Washington city, in
company with ei. F. Blythe of Hood
River. Mr. Pike was at that time a
member of the national council of
administration from Oregon.
Commander Pike was married in Linn
county, Or., in 1871, to Miss Mabala
Deney. He is today a prosperous farm
er and stock raiser at Wasco, where his
son has immediate supervision of the
farm work. Mr. Pike expects to attend
the national encampment at Boston
this coming August.
