jCogcL Iiver Slacier. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1903 The Oregon delegation at Washing ton teems to be plajing In bnrd luck. In the committee apxintnieiiU of tin lower house, this slute was given noth ing of importance. Hermann, who wanted a river and harbor position, got almost nothing. Hpeaker Cannon had offered him a position on the in sular committee, but thin wasn't enough, and Mr. Hermann's colleagues sent it letter to President Roosevelt ask ing for his support In their request. Roosevelt sent the letter to Cannon who promptly turned down Mr. Her mann. And now comes the news that Secretary Hitchcock declares he will not reinstate Asa V. Thomson, sus pended receiver at the LaGrande land office, notwithstanding the fact that the Oregon senators sent Mr. Hitch cock a note asking that Thomson be kept In office. - County Clerk A. E. Lake has fur nished a statement to Recorder Nick elsen showing the total amount of as sessable property within the city of Hood River for 1103 to be $208,927. The figures for 1902 were 1228,815, showing a decrease of a few dollars less than t20,000. The 3 mill city tax last year raised something over $600. The next meeting of the city council Is the latttt dale for fixing next year's city tax. When Editor Scott of the Oregonian reads his paper's dispatches from Wash ington, telling of the troubles of the Oregon delegation, he probably con gratulates himself, after all, that last winter's legislature did not send him to the United States senate. The recoil from the "first gun " wi 8 evidently too much for the prohibi tionists, for in the city election, Tue day, their ticket was snowed under by nearly a 2 to 1 majority. It was quiet election, with nothing of the in terest and excitement displayed a year ago, when things went the other way The count of the ballots showed the following result : For Council men Geo. P.
