The Glacier editor junior dropped
over to White Suliuon for a few min
utes last Saturday. He was very much
Hurprised to see the many new business
houses, dwellings and other improve
ments since his last visit there in July.
White Salmon has enjoyed a boom this
past summer and Is now something
more than just a name on the map.
This settlement on the uorth bank of
the Columbia, which last year consist
ed of but a few scattered farm houses
and a store building or two, is now a
populous village already putting on
citified airs. Jewett avenue is lined
with four or five store buildings, a
printing office, blacksmith shop, sev
eral fine residences and a neat little
church. The community interest cen
ters just now in the large hotel Mr.
Lauterbach has under consideration.
The people of the little city take a
rightful pride in all improvements and
realize that a commodious and well
kept hotel adds greatly in making a
favorable impression on visitors to the
town.
The Glacier man didn't have the
time to make any visits; darkness was
coming on and the broad Columbia lay
between him and home. But be
couldn't pass a printing office. Editor
Harlan had just mailed his weekly edi
tion and was cutting his night's wood.
Mr. Harlan has probably passed his
three score years nnd finds it slow work
at his time of life trying to master the
secrets of the printer's art. His son
Milton, publisher of the Stevenson Pio
neer, is foreman of the shop. After
getting out his own paper be goes to
White Salmon and sets type for the
Enterprise. Mr. Harlan is afraid that
if the river freezes up this winter and
the steamboats have to stop running,
his son may not be able to make con
nections with White Salmon, and the
Enterprise will have a bard time com
ing out, ho be wanted to know of the
Glacier editor if it would be possible for
him after publication day to put in the
rest of the week at the Enterprise office.
We should Jike to, help you out, Mr.
Harlan, but we have too many troubles
of our own.
8. W. Condon was found busy with
his land office work as United States
commissioner. Mr. Condon la thor
oughly competent and conscientious la
tils duties. , When the Homesteader or
timber, clairnaut puts into Mr. Condon's
hands the matter of arranging final
proof, be may rest assured that It will
le properly attended to In every par
ticular. Mr. Condon is a strong be
liever in good schools. He Is one of
the leaders In the movement for a new
school house and assured us that White
Salmon, progressive In all things else,
will be supplied with a model school
building and adequate equipment for a
splendid graded school by this time
next year.
A stop was made at the new drug
store, Guy Crow and Dr.Gearhart, pro
prietors. -These men have a very neat
store and have already worked up an
excellent trade.
The department store of C. M. Wol-
fard & Cn. was crowded with purchas
ers. This Is substantial evidence
enough that Mr. Wolfard is doing a
thriving business, and from the gen
eral air of thrift and prosperity about
the establishment and the generous
smile of contentment on the face of the
genial proprietor, the Hood River news
paper man concluded Mr. Wolfard
must be making money. We are glad
of It and wish him all kinds of success.
Mr. Wolfard was formerly In business
in Hood River, and his many friends
were sorry to see him leave.
White Salmon is the most important
freight and passenger point for the
steamboat companies between Portland
and The Dalles. Stretching for 40
miles up the White Salmon river to
Mount Adams is a large scope of coun
try including the settlements of Hu
sum, Pine Flat, Gilmer, Trout Lake
and the Camas Prairie country. The
fruit-producing quality of the soil is the
same as that of Hood River valley,
while the country around Trout Lake
and that of Glen wood, known as Camas
Prairie, is admirably adapted to stock
raising and dairying. The surround
ing hills are heavily timbered, and
White Salmon river is utilized by the
Menominee Lumber Co. to bring out
millions of feet of saw logs to their mill
at Nicolai, four miles below Hood River,
where railroad facilities are obtained.
At Trout Lake Is operated a co-operative
cheese factory.
The sales of dairy products, cattle,
small fruits and apples, and the money
distributed by the lumber industry,
makes the commuuity prosperous and
the people happy and contented. Land
sells "at from $25 to (150 an acre, while
considerable government land remains
to be taken, up by the homesteader.
The country Is capable of supporting a
large and thriving population.
Hood River U the nearest railroad
point for all of this country. While
most of the business of White Salmon
is carried to Portland by bouts, some of
it must necessarily pass through Hood
River, especially shipments of straw
berries. Transportation facilities be
tween the two places are very Inad
equate. A steam ferry making regular
trips is much needed. The two towns
should unite in securing this ferry.
More people would then locate at White
Salmon, and altogether It would mean
more business for White Salmon and
Hood River. Commuuity jealousies
should not interfere. One town would
not draw trade from the other. On
the contrary, It would mean more busi-
ness for both place. White Salmon's
population would increase, and not to
the detriment of Hood River, for the
settlement of either side of the river
will add to the exports and provide a
wider field for the merchants.
People desiring to know more of the
neighboring communities on t he north
side of the Cotumbia would do well to
subscribe to the Glacier. Tills paper
has a large circulation in that country
and the weekly letters from its splendid
correspondents contain much that Is of
interest to the general reader.
