Council Grinds Out Goodly Grist.
With much talking and informal of
ferings of suggestions, reference to the
city charter, motions and good-natured
counter motions, the common council
ground out a goodly grist of orders for
sidewalks, street improvements, etc.,

was a full attendance, with an
exception in the absence of Council
man Gessling, who had sent in a writ
ten resignation as a member of the city
lawmakers. Mr. Gessling's resignation
was accepted to take effect when his
duly elected successor shall take office,
the second Tuesday in January, 1904.
Mr. Gessling was asked by the Glacier
Tuesday morning if he had any state
ment to make for publication, but had
nothing to say.
Sidewalks were ordered built on the
north side of Oak street, from Dallas'
corner to Park street, and from the
bridge over Hood River on the south
side of State street to Front street.
Sherman avenue was ordered im
proved through Winans addition, and
Itiver street widened to the full width.

expressed a willingness to stand for a

it right that the city should help out
to the extent of $35. His motion to
this effect carried.
Marshal Cunning mentioned at this
juncture that subscriptions for dona
nation work could be considered worth
about one-half the stated amount. He
also said that some one had thrown
barrel staves into drain ditches he had
dug, and caused the water to overflow
and damage the streets. He is work
ing to improve some of the bad places
in the main thoroughfares.
On motion of Councilman P. S; Dav
idson, the street commissioner was
voted an emergency fund of $50 for
fixing up the streets.
Councilman Prather, as chairman of
the health committee, reported butone
or two cases of contagious disease, and
that the general health of the commu
nity was good. Members of this com
mittee evidently overlooked or over
smelled the escaping sewerage on Oak
street, which can be laid to the want
of a sewer system.
The special sewer committee is still
wrestling with Time and the matter of
rights of way. Chairman Pruthersaida
report on the matter could be made by

As Tuesday, December 8, is the date
o the city election, on motion of H. E.
Davidson, the city hail wag designated
as a polling place, and three judges
and two clerks of election were ap
pointed as follows: T. J. Cunning, D.
A. Turner, II. J. Hibbard, judges; A.
Winans and F. B. Barnes, clerks.
The matter of the road to the boat
landing was referred to the committee
on streets and publlo property with in
structions to locate the road and to
frame their report in the form of an
ordinance.

A Splendid Brand of Butter.
T. 8. Townsend of the Townsend
Creameiy company of Portland was in
Hood River a few days ago, looking
after the butter and cheese trade of
that company. While here he arranged
with the McGuire Bros, to handle and
push the sale of the Townsend butter.
This brand of butter is "White Clo
ver," and T. 8. Townsend made the re
mark that there was just one thing that
every person in his employ had to do,
and that was to keep the quality of the
"White Clover" brand at the very
highest standard, lie also said that he
could attribute his success in business
to his continuous efforts in this direc
tion, stating that his company would
guarantee that any one buying the
"White Clover" brand would always
have good butter to spread on his
bread. From the large amount of this
butter that the McGuiru Bros, are dis
posing of, Mr. Townsend's statements
concerning the "White Clover" are
evidently correct.
