About The Hood River glacier. (Hood River, Or.) 1889-1933 | View Entire Issue (Nov. 19, 1903)
Hood Iftver tSlacier. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1903 Several of our country exchanges are giving uotice of a raise In the price nf aubscrlption from $1.00 to $1.60. They find there is nothing in punching a country paper for glory alone. Jt costs aomething to buy paper and pay printers, besides paying rent and other running expenses that must be met with the cash at least every month. At the meeting of Oregon editors in Salem last month, Wilbur F. Brock, circulation manager of the Portland Oregonlan, strongly advised a $2.00 per year subscription rate for country pub lishers, declaring the cost of production made this price necessary. It is the rule In all printing offices that printers must be paid at the end of each week. Paper, ink and type founders' bills must be paid by the 10th of every month; otherwise the supplies stop. Subscriptions are paid but once a year, hence it can be seen bow important it Is to a newspaper to receive prompt payments upon subscriptions. Happily the Glacier has good paying subscribe; s who generally pay In advance. Ex amine the label on your paper and see If you are paid in advance. "Where I had one inquiry for pamph lets, there were ten people wanting cop ies of Oregon newspapers," said Mrs. Edyth Tozier Weatherred at the meeting of the editorial association at Salem, while she was persuading the editors to send their papers regularly to St. Louis next year for gratuitous distribution at the world's fair. It is not intended that the publisher should furnish all papers at his own expense, as he could not well afford to, but it was suggested that thoBe i cople o' a community inter ested in securing nw settlers should contribute to a fui.d for this purpose. People prefer the newspapers because the stories of production and soil possi bilities are verified daily or weekly. The information, too, is more up-to-date. Oregon should supply an abundance of this kind of advertising at both St. Louie and Portland. Malcolm A. Moody iias been com pletely exhonorated from the charges preferred against him In the United Salutes court at Portland, and the ex congressman comes forth with flying colors. Mr. Moody's friends never doubted the outcome of the malicious attack. They warmly congratulate him. Less than three weeks remains until city election, and not the slightest rumor has gone forth as to what's to be done. It's a tame election day in Hood Rivir without a contest between the "wets' and the "drys." The Weather. The mercury went to freezing pointTues 1 day, and Wednesday afternoon as the Glacier forms were being closed, the gentle snow was falling with an east wind behind. It. The Wind storm of last week was not nearly so destructive as first reported. A peculiar feature of it all was, that some orchards escaped the wind entirely, while others suffered more or less. The rain continued until Sunday. W. 8. Coulter, foreman of the. logging camps to&tne Menominee Jumber com pany, was in Hood River Friday. Mr. Coulter will establish a new camp on the White Salmon this week. v. vanneuot f ertile, Minn., is in Hood River visiting his daughter, Mrs C. D.
