The farmers here use the winter spray,
and that pest has not secured a foot
hold in Hood River. Mr. Smith says
the Han Jose scale once started is hard
to eradicate, as It attaches itself to the
native trees. -
Farmers are taking advantage of the
fine weather to gather their apple crop,
Jo'ph A. Wilson, manager of the Hood
River Apple Growers' union, says thut
owiu to the extraordinary large glze
of the apples this fall, the crop will ex
ceed the estimate offjO.OOO boxes. Prices
are very good, which assures prosper,

Young1 Woman Crushed to Death.
Miss Fannie E. Hillhtrorn of Upper
Hood KUer valley was crushed to
deatli and drowned, Monday afiernoou,

the Bone irrigating ditch, about 12
miles south of town, on Hie East Side
The accident occurred about 3 o'clock
in the afternoon. The young woman
had started on horseback after atil

bank of the ditch, when the embank

Burt Belieu, at work a short distance
below, noticing the muddy water and
having neeii the girl go by a few min
utcs befi re, started up the ditch. He
called to the farm hands of N. VV.Bone,
and the horse, almost dead, was taken
from the ditch before the body of the
girl could be found.

in front of W. B. Shute's house on Oak
street. '1 he two teams crashed into
Clipping's house on the lower eide of
the street and completely demolished
McGuire's wagon. The horses and har
ness will also need repairing.
