Prathar and wife, who went East with the- Grand Army ex cursion, last September, to Washington City, returned on Sunday's afternoon train. They have been living in Wash ington City all this time. Charley thought by being close to the pension ottice he could get an increase of pen sion, which be well deserves, batfouud that pensions cannot be any more readily obtained there than here, 8,000 miles from the pension office. The pension otlicials turn a deaf ear to the applicaut who is there to plead bis own case, and cannot be tuduced to act on a claim out of its regular order.. Charley says that after the crowds that attend ed the Grand Army encampment left Washington the city seemed deseried, and there was no work to be bad for an old man like him. With only his pension of S a month for an income he found it pretty close picking. Occa sionally he got a job of carrying in coal, for w-hicb he would get about 35 cents for half day's work. Finally he went to peddling boquetsof flow ers, and things began to dime bis way. He bad struck the "tide in the affairs of men which" if it dldfl't lead him on to fortune and to fame got him the wherewith to get back to Oregon, where he feels satisfied he lielongs, and from whence no promise of a pension claim, or any other claim, will ever en t'ce him. At peddling flowers he made hh much as $9 in one week. As soon as he could scrape enough together to bring him and his wife buck to Oregon, he shook the dust of the capital city, with its cold-blooded ofllceholders, from his brogans and gladly boarded the train that bore him to the West. Both Charley and his wife are awfully glad to get hack to Hood River. They still have 40 acres of land on Rock creek, on which they will make their home. He will prosecute his claim for au increase of pension from his home here and never again desire to wander anrong strangers. Joe Wilson has something up his sleeve.
