Wasco county is rapidly becoming free
from debt. The eemi-anniial state
ments of the officers of Wasco
county show that on May 11 the out
i.mliii warrants of the county
..,tfl in s58.191.14. and that on that
rlTl there was in the hands of the treas
urer fH,06:J.72 applicable to the payment
f warrants, leaving a net indebtedness
of $49,537.42. On October 2, 1002, the
semi-annual report showed the total in
debtedness to have been f99.896.48. Thus
in six months the county debt has been
dreaded 150.359.08. Owing to a change
made by the last legislature in the
method of collecting taxes, the taxes on
the 1903 and 1904 rolls will both fall due
in the full of 1904, and by that time the
entire debt to the county should be wiped
out, provided good times keep up

Commencing Monday, June 1, 1903, the
steamer Maja will make round trips dally to

Returning, leave The Dalles at 2 p. m.; arrive
at Hood River at 4 p. m.
Hunday, the Maja will leave Hood River at

The steamer Maja has new engines and will

John Ireland Henderson lias pur

at Chenowith in which Mr. Henderson
was interested has been closed, and the
Fortland capitalists now own practically
all the land along the Little n line Sal
mon. Mr. Henderson is of the opinion
that the water power at Chenowith will
be used to develop electricity lor Port'
land.
