About The Hood River glacier. (Hood River, Or.) 1889-1933 | View Entire Issue (April 2, 1903)
Kood ver Slacier THURSHAY, APRIL 2, 1903. This week' Glacier contains a most Interesting article by II. C. Coe on the history of Hood River 50 years ago. The story is too long for completion in one issue and will be continued next week. This will be a valuable paper to keep. Extra copies have been printed and they may be obtained at this office for 5 cent each. Hood River today and Hood River (or Dog River, as it was then called) 50 years ago presents in deed a strange contrast. With all the modern conveniences of rural telephones, free rural mail delivery, electric lights, enterprising merchants, large orchards and strawberry plantations, six daily passenger trains, and with the valley filled with prosperous fruit growers, we of today can little realize that 50 years ago the valley was still the hunt ing grounds of the Indians, and lives were yet to be sacrificed that the present prosperity should be ours. Fifty years ago it was a two-days' journey to Portland ; now the distance is made Dy train in a little over two hours. Mails were few and far between ; now we con verse with our citv friends by telephone, and receive the daily papers the same day they are printed. Hon. W. R.
