The weather for the past two weeks
has been what might be called fine. We
had rain last week and snow Saturday,
and since then sunshiny days and frosty
nichts. The thermometer this Thurs
day morning marked 25 degrees above

Captain Harry Olson is visiting his
father-in-law, Amos underwood. Mr.
Olson is mate on the steamer Reliance,
now running from Seattle to Bremer
ton. The distance is lo miles, and
every Haturdav there is a race between
all the boats running on this line. The
Reliance made the run recently in 54
minutes, beating the time of all the
other boats.
The Davidson Fruit company have
called a meeting of strawberry growers
Saturday, March 21, at it) o clock a. m.

profitable meeting for everybody grow,
ing strawberries and no grower can af
ford to miss going. The question of get-

Colonel Frank V Drake, superinten
dent of the Portland bureau of informa
tion, was in llood River last Friday. At
his suggestion a meeting of the commer
cial club waj called, and Colonel Drake
explained the purpose of the organiza
tion which he represents. The bureau
of information will have a large, well
lighted room in the union depot at Port
land. It will ascertain and tabulate the
resources of all parts of the state, gather
an exhibit of its products and be pre
pared to tell all about Oregon to persona
desiring internist ion on the subject. All
the railroads and steamship lines w ill
take exhibits to the bureau free of
charge. A committee was appointed by
the club to gather an exhibit of the
products to be forwarded to the bureau
at Portland. The committee consists of
the real estate firms of Prat her Invest

The Order of Washington in Hood
River held a very enjoyable session
Saturday evening. Supreme President
W. W. Terry and his estimable lady
were present. Comrade Terry addressed
the union in a very pleasant manner,
and nnswered satisfactorily every ques
tion from the members regarding the
status and operation of the order m a
frank and earnest way that carried con
viction to the mind of every listener, that
in the Order of Washington we have the
most substantial, progressive and safest
fraternal society in the country, and
that it has more commendable features
to present to the members than any
other similar organization, in fact, in the
words of a prominent Boston insurance
man. "Its plan is 20 years ahead of the
times, and the people must be taught
the plan clearly before they can appre
ciate it. lhe order Is growing very
rapidly in numbers and in favor with
the public, and has the fairest of pros
pects of eventually outclassing all its
competitors. Mrs. E. M. Adams, su
preme representative for this district,
was also present, and in her usual pleas-
ins manner put the union through the
work of the order. Mrs. Adams is the
daughter of our worthy townsman, II.
Pugh, has a very charming personality,
and perfect familiarity with the work,
which makes it a pleasure to follow her
instructions.
C. L. Copple started East Tuesday to
visit his father. His father is quite sick
at his home at Walnut Hill, 111. Mr.
Copple may be gone a month.
T. E. Wickens came back to Hood
River one day last week. Tom can't
tear himself away from Hood River for
a very great while at a time.
The Pioneer says Captain C. T. Belch
er has struck hot water above the high-
water ine at Collins and will erect a
?15,000 hotel.
F. II. Watts, the tombstone man of
The Dalles, has been in Hood River for
the past week, setting up some of his
work.
Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Blythe moved up
from Portland Monday. Ned will re
sume his old position on the Glacier.

postponed from last week will be held
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hartley,

Birthday Surprise Party.
Miss Macy Gardner was given a sur
prise party last Friday evening, the oc
casion being the anniversary of her
birth. The party was given at the resi
dence of Mrs. J. W. Rigby. A most de
lightful time was had by all present.
Lunch was served, and afterwards an
old fashioned taffy-pulling was indulged
in, In playing "Poor Kitty," the rack
et made by the girls caused all the dogs
in the neighborhood to set up barking,
and the girls had a hilarious old time.
Those present were: Macy Gardner,
Nellie Ilornor, Ruth Rigbv, Blanch
Howe, Alice Rea, Amanda Sieverkrop,
May Brown, Florence Cox. The stormy
weather prevented others invited from
coming.

Mrs. Jones was cleaning house one
day recently, and had hired two hobos

Can a Horse Talk!
Those who have no special fondness
for domestic auiiiiiils, and especially for
dogs, cats, and horses, will, of course,
ridicule the position taker! by Veterin
ary Surgeon Roberge as a witness be
fore a New York court last Wednesday.
Dr. Roberge, when questioned as to
the treatment of sick horses, declared:
"A horse must tw thoroughly under
stood by one who attempts to treat it.
You must know it well, talk with it.
itnd understand its language."
"Do you mean to say," inquired the
astonished attorney, "that a horse can
talk?" "Why, certainly tie can, In bis
way," replied the veterinary surgeon.
"If a horse knows you are going to
treat him he will hold out his leg or his
foot, if the trouble lies there. Once he
thinks you can do bim good, he'll soon
take means to let you know what his
ailment is, if possible."
"And does he talk to every one like
that?" asked the attorney. "6h,no," re
plied the veterinary, "only to those he
knows, and who know bim."
Dr. Roberge could have gone much
farther than this without overstepping
the bounds of truth. Horses do talk to
those in whom they have confidence as
plainly as if they had the human gift of
language, and what they say is as
intelligible to those who understand
them us if they spoke with their
mouths Instead of with their ears,
noses, and feet. Everybody who
loves the horse, und who has much
to do with the horse, knows that
the animal can understand what is
said to him and done for him by one
iu whom he has confidence.
Incidents illustrative of this fuel are
numerous, and sometimes so extraordi
nary as to tax the credulity of the ordi
nary man, but they are nevertheless
based upon the common experience not
so much of horsemen as of horse
lovers. That a dog can talk is so generally
admitted to he the, case now us to
demand no special argument, und, to
a certain degree, this is true respecting
the conversational ability of the cat.
