Hooi iiver Slacier. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1903. Spray lour Orchards. This is the time of year to spray fruit trees with a solution of salt, sulphur and lime. This spray kills the Sun Jose scale and prevents fungus on the fruit. You may not have the scale or any fungus iu your orchards, hut it is a good wash for the trees, and the fruit next season will be more perfect after uing this spray. Here is the formula: 50 pounds unslaked lime. . , 60 pounds flowers of sulphur. 25 pounds common sulk Slake the lime in enough water to do it thoroughly; add the sulphur and boil for an hour at least, adding water if necessary. Then add the salt and boil 15 minutes more. Add water to make 150 gallons, and spray hot through a coarse nozzle. We all know the good effects of spray ing for the codlln moth, and every or chardist who fulled to spray thoroughly for this pest last year has resolved to do it right next season aud save his fruit. If you' fail to spray with salt, sulphur and lime while the trees are dormant you will be neglecting a most Important part of yourwork. Tliie spray should be applied to every tree in the orchard. If your trees have the scale it will kill it; if you have noscalo, it will keep it out of your orchard. "Let us spray" if we wish to start right for a good crop in 1003. Hood River will soon be getting its share of the immigration that is com ing to the North Pacific coaBt by rea son of the low railway rates and the desire of Easterners to seek a more cou- genial climate. luese newcomers should be given the glad hand. They should be encouraged to investigate our resources. Give them facts and let them know what can be done here iu growing fruit. Our climate speakB fur itself, we have soli and climate adapted to the fruit Industry, the best of trans portation facilities, and if the stranger on first acquaintance gets the idea that we are the right kind of people, he is mighty apt to locate with us. There seems to be general satisfac tion over the result of the senatorial election. Enough members did the sensible thing at the last moment cf the last hour of the session and voted for the man who had the strongest fol lowing. Mr. rulton Is a man every way qualified for the high office to which be aspired. He made a cloan campaign and won without a taint of dishonorsomething new in Oregon senatorial elections. ' The grip is more prevalent than usual this winter. Its prevalency is attrib uted to the long spell of dry weather, Three weeks without rain is too much for Oregouians; the grip is apt to get iu its work. Jliriuu ,atuUMlull7 VUUIMIUJ. There was an enthusiastic meeting of the farmers of Hood River valley in the A. O. U. W. hall last Saturday, for the purpose of taking steps toward organiz ing a home rural telephone company .The hall was filled with people representing every section of the valley. J. H. Shoe maker called the meeting to order, and after reading the call, stated the object of the meeting to be for the purpose of organizing to build, equip and maintain telephone lines in every part of the val ley, as well as in the city of Hood River, ' provided the people wanted them to come to tne city, and would grant per mission to set poles and string wires through the streets. If not, they would have to build a town of their own. At the conclusion of Mr. Shoemaker's re marks. Captain Jas. P. Shaw was elected to preside at the meeting, and L. F. Morse as secretary. Upon assuming the chair, Mr. Shaw delivered a short address, referring to ino various sections ot me country where the people had put in their own system of phones at from 30 to 75 per cent of the cost of similar service under pri vate ownership. "The trend of public ownership, lie earn, "ot not only the telephones but of all means of serving tne people in a ptiDiic capacity is rap idly spreading throughout thecountrv.' A letter was read from the manager of the New berg rural telephone system in stalled by the people of Yamhill county, showing that the cost of each telephone per month was but 50 cents, as against l-.uu tor tne same service a private cor poration was charging them. The same may be said wherever the people have put in their phones. Great interest was manifested bv the large number present and the earnest ness ot the speakers who addressed the meeting. There is no doubt but the people are in earnest in this matter and will install their own system of tele phones. J. II. Shoemaker, Jas. P. Shaw and W. V Johnson was constituted a com mittee on organization, and were iu structed to proceed at once to put the new enterprise ot the people in shape to do business. A committee to be known as the push committee was appointed to solicit signatures lor stock, and they will call on the citizens this week for that purpose. The meeting adjourned amid applause lor the success of the new phone system, and will meet again Saturday, February 28, at K. of P. hall. At which time it is expected the committee on organization will be able to report. Evervbodv in terested is invited and expected to be present. Looking l'p the Records. Hood River.Oregon, February 23,1903, Editor Glacier: In the issue of your paper oi February 13 appeared a list of namaof people living iu North Yakima, Washington, which were represented as a few of the people who would build homes with money obtained from the National Homeseekers' Association. The facts in the case would not warrant any such publication, as the following letter will prove. Respectfully, J. E. Hassa. North Yakima, Washington, February 17. 1903 J. E. Hanna, Hoot! River, Oregon. Pear sir: Yours of the 14th came to hand yesterday, and in replv will say, thai I have .investigated the county records here and find no names on their books contained in the list you sent me where the National Home seekers' Association loaned any money to any of them. 1 called on E. L. Ses sions in person, and he said that "there had been no loans made here in the city by that company." I a ill give you a list of the names of those I went to see: Geo N Tuesely, G L Hixon, Rev J H Wood. Jennie Ilijion. Geo F Siiile, Ed Kratzman.and, every one of them said they had not received a cent from the company, and they did not know of any one receiving a loan from this company. All of these people seem very anxious to give me information in regard to the company, tins man, Jb. L. Missions, was their agent here up to the nrst oi the year. Hoping this will be . satisfac tory, I remain yours truly, IV. IV UAUJUKO.N. l,ie-(.'ol(lciiihile Railroad. O.P.Ramsey and wife (nee Madge Warren) are visiting Mrs. Ramsey's pareuts, Mr. and Mrs. B. Warren of this city. Mr. Ramsey is a civil en gineer In the employ of the Columbia River and Northern Railway Co., now under construction from Lyle, on the Columbia river, to Goldendale, Wash. Mrs. Ramsey has- been braving the rigors of a cold wiuter and the accom panying deep 'snows all winter in a tent with her husband, suffering only isolation from civilization and friends. To a representative oi the Glacier Mr Ramsey said the road is completed eleven and one-half miles out from Lyle, and that construction trains are running over that portion of the road There are now two engines aud u complement of cars on the road, and other rolling stock expected soon. The company is building a round house and turn table at Lyle, large enough to accommodate a half dozen engines. - Construction" work is being pushed Ht a rank! rate all ulonir the line be tween Lyle and Goldeudalli, with the intention of completing the road In time to move the 1U03 wheat crop out of the Klickitat valley. "Is It the intention, Mr. Ramsey, to extend the road east from Goldendale iuto the Yakima valley?" "I can not answer that question. 1 will say, however, that there are now two parties of engineers in the. field east of Goldendale running prelim inary lines. With this information I wilt leave you to draw your own con clusions." "There seems scarcely a doubt, Mr. Ramsey, but what the C. R. and N will extend their eastern end into ttte Yakima country?" "It looks that way." "What doA'ou know alioot the plans of the company for a continuation of their line down the Columbia? "I have no Information relative to the intentions of the company in that direction. I will state, however, that i u January a party of surveyors were engaged in running a line down the north hank ot the Columbia river. Who they were and for what purpose they were running the line, none of our party seem to know." "Could they have been parties con nected with the Columbia -Northern?' "No: tbev hud no connection with our road, the lino These parties were running was above the line ot the u. R. and N. Besides, they 'con tin tied on down the Columbia. No, this bus other connection than the road I am with." This, then, must be the initial work of some other road, possibly the iNorth ern Pacific: and it might be the O. R and N. Who knows? It's a guess which. As straws show the way the wind blows, so surveyors point the di rection railroads are built. That there will be a railroad built down the north bank of the Columbia to Vancouver, and that, too, In the near future, is a conclusion easily reached by the knowing ones.
