"Hooi liver Slacier. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1902. White Salmon Items. James Greaves of Oakland, California, is visiting S. W. Condon. White Salmon is to have telephone connection with the outside world at last. The wire was put up one day last week. Frank Groshong moved hia black mith tools from hia ranch into the new building lately-erected in White Salmon Now the passer by is greeted with the musical ring of the hammer and anvil. The latest subject for discussion on the street corners is the formation of a dancing club. It seems that there has not been dances enough to satisfy some of the young people; hence the move lor a club. ' Some object to the public, free for all, dances as not being select ejiough, hence a dance "trust" as the latest "combina tion of industries." Some of our local politicians do not seem to be satisfied with affairs, sup posed at least to be settled by the last election. This judgment is based on discussions heard about the stores. What the town needs is a public hall in which these issues could be settled. The almost continuous rain of the past week hindered work on the new reservoir from which the town is to get its supply of water, but Mr. Jewett has a force of men at work on it this week. This improvement will soon be comple ted, then the electric lights will receive attention. . 8. W. Condon is having the finishing touches put on the interior of his new dwelling. X. Crappcr Cropplngs. Rain, rain, rain. This is enough to disgust an old WeD-looter. snow ieu to about the depth of an inch here last Wednesday morning but was all gone by 8 o'clock, and it has bee n raining ever since. You can hear the cry all over the valley "I wish it would hold off for a couple of weeks longer, I haven't got my apples picked, or I haven't got my Dotatoes duK. I haven't got my corn fod der in, or this ain't done or that isn't done. The farmers must De two weeKS behind time, or the rain two weeks ahead of time, one or the other, or per haps they are both a little out of whack. Several parties were intending to set more berries this fall but this kind of weather would put a damper on setting out anything. (Man is a queer "critter' friend Joe. if we all manage to squeeze through the pearly gates, dollars to dough-nuts some of us would have a kick coming about the condition of the golden streetB, the water supply, the weather.the crops, the sanitary arrange ments, and perhaps the style of wings the angels wear. Alan is a "dreutui queer critter." t.a.) Chas. Chandler contemplates taking a trip to Texas soon, to visit friends and relatives. He expects to be gone most of the winter. Mrs. J. H. Shoemaker will start for Tendleton next week on a visit; she will be gone several weeks. S. N. J. Cox is taking music lessons on the guitar from Mrs. Goddard. Jim says he is learning very fast and will as tonish the natives one of these days. John Stranahan is building an addi tion on his already spacious residence and expects to keep bachelor 8 nan in grand style this winter. Some of our young folks went to town last Friday night to attend the dance at the K. of P. hall ; but owing to the bad night, the dance came near being a fizzle with a big r . Jon, (Well Notes. The recent heavy rains are playing havoc with the- roads. In several places the surface water is cutting them up, where a little work would drain it off. The road supervisor of this district is like the average police man when trouble i-omes, be is off on some other lieat. If there has been a lick of work done ou the mads in Odell district this year I am not aware of it. Yesterday a team stuck between Charley Davis' ana Dan bmitu s place, and wiDter scarcely begun. It was a real treat to receive the-glad hand of the Editor of the Glacier while In town yesterday. Glad .to see you home. Hon. J. M. Shelley, brother of Troy and Roswell Shelley was a guest of Troy's over Sunday and on Monday called at the little white store. Mr. Shelley owns a half interest in a 75 barrel flouring mill at Eugene, where lie has made his residence tor ninny years. He is a member of tbe legisla ture from Lane county. His. wife ac companied him. They are charmed with Hood River. Monday evening they took the train to Boise, Idaho. On the way to town over the West Side, so many delightful pictures unfolded themselves to (heir view in clover mead ows and heavy laden apple orchards so richly colored that it seemed as If the hand of some artist had figured here. This, together with the uplifting scen ery on every hand, proved a perfect revelation to them. But there is no use of trying to describe Hood River valley with its wealth of scenery and Its boundless resources. It must be seen to be appreciated. On Monday Frank and Bernice Wy inau returned from Walla Walla, where they were attending college un til Frank became ill with typhoid fe ver. It must have been a close call for Frank, judging from his appearance. Glad to see you back, but regret the caue that led to your return. Mrs. C. G. Roberts returned last Fri day from l'ortlund Hftor several days absence. If it is not wood hauling it is some thing else that keeps the road lined with teams. Now it is the apple wagon that sheds its fragrance along the way, instead of the breath of the piue wood. The Rev. C. A. Wyman left for Tort land today on business connected with Ills brick and tile factory. Mr. Wy man's work reaches beyond the pulpit in more ways than one and Odeil 1st" be congratulated on the fait of his having withdrawn bis place from sale and his conclusion to remain per manently here. A distinguishing feature of the pro gramme at the literary club last week, was the song of' little Johnnie White. It brought forth a storm of applause and an encore, and Johnnie was loaded for bear and responded In a manner that would have done credit to a more pretentious place than Odell. Business at the little white store ha grown to smb. proportions already that freight team is indu-peu.siible. Today, the proprietor was sovn handling the ribbons over a pair of tine l'ligliahshires purchased from B. T. Young. Mr. Young has sold 40 head this season, mot oflhetn being from one herd, and brand ed figure 5. They have all proven good and tractable, and Mr. Young Is to be congratulated on his horse sense. A potato weighing four pounds can t seen In the window of the little white store. It was gmwu in the garden of Troy Shelley. John Kroeger has also fine exhibit there. $ Duke's Yalley Items. We are having; plenty of rain rft pres ent, and last Thursday morning we were reminded that winter is near, as the ground was white with snow for a short fine. The rain caused William and Dennas Dodson to quit loggiug, and they have returned to their home In Dukes val ley. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stanton went to Portland last Huturday and returned Tuesday, J. A. Knox has some fine beef cattle to butclftr this fall. James Malcome has sold uis home stead to Thomas Frederick ; considera tion f 100. Mr. Malcome and family will start for Kansas City some time this week. They will leave the rattlers and coyotes and go to a land where the 'possum and perwaimoiis grow. Dukes valley's loss will be Missouri's gain. Thomas Broderick has moved upon his place he bought here and intends to make a big clearing this winter. Lafe Little's smiling face was seen in our valley this week. We have been granted a school dis trict at last. Saturday was held the firet meeting In the district, when we organized by electing W. G. Dodson, C. It. Bone and A. J. Kessell directors and J. A. Knox clerk. Two hundred and fifty dollars were subscribed to build a house, and the place thought best to build it was on the southeast comer of J. P. Thomsen's place. Now if some one would come Into our val ley and build a store house we would be up to date. If some one with lots of capital' wants to go into business here lie could do a big credit business, for the whole valley would patronize him, I think, until pay day anyhow. . . I. K. E. Agreement for Interchange of Tracks. Portland Journal. It transpires that within the last few days an agreement was reached between the Northern Pacific, Union Pacific, 0, R. & N. and Great Northern roads, regarding an interchange of track privileges on the Snake and Columbia River divisions, and the papera to the agreement have been signed snd are now in force. The agreement gives the Northern Pacific equal rights over the O, R. & N, tracks from Wallftla to Port land and to the great Northern from Spokane to Portland and the Union Pacific and Great Northern will have a similar privilege over the Northern Pacific tracks to Sound cities. It fur ther provides for the running of North ern Pacific trains over the Snake River branch of the O. R. & N. between Rip aria and Lewiston. Railroad Notice to Ministers. The issuance of the customary form of O. R. AN. individual half fare permits will be discontinued with the close of the year 1902, and for 1903 joint clergy certificates issued by the Trans-Continental Passenger association will be honored on the lines of the O. R. & N. Co. These permits will be good in the combined territories of the Western, Southwestern and Trans-Continental associations, embracing practically the territory west of Chicago and St. Louis. A charge of f 1.00 is made by the Trans Continental association to cover expense of issuing these permits. Application blanks will soon be placed in the hands of local agents, ana ministers should procure them early as, after being ex ecuted and certified to by the local agent, they have to be sent to James Charlton, Chicago, with the $1.00 fee before the permit is available.
