    "Hood lver Slacier
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1902.
In the appointment of M. P. Iaen
licrg of Hood River as "upervlsor of the
eastern and northern division of the
Cascade forest reserve, the president
has pk'ufed the Grand Array of the
Republic. Mr. laenberg served as a
soldier throughout the civil war, and
Ids appointment will meet with the
hearty approval of the old soldiers, by
whom he is well known throughout
the state. Mr. Moody's persistence in
standing by the nomination of Mr.
Isenberg in fuoe of the opposition of
the balance of (he delegation, shows lie
is a stayer, and that when be goes for
any tiling he goes in to win. Mr. Isen
berg is not without experience In for
estry '-"work. The appolutmeut Is a
just recognition by his party for ser
vices rendered. Mr. Moody and Mr.
Isenherg are to be congratulated upon
the oiiKotiie of the dispute over the
lilling of this important office.
The Baker City Herald tells of salt
brush as a crop for the Alkali plains.
It nays: "If some experiments now
being conducted by H. W. Smith, a
Utah farmer, are carried to a point that
will demonstrate the correctness of his
theory, the state of Oregon will have
cause to rise afid call his name blessed.
Not long ago Mr. Smith sent and se
cured some seeds of a plant which is
popularly known as the Australian salt
brush. He has produced a small crop
which he finds that his cattle eat with
apparent relish and which seems to pro
duce an abundance of nutriment. The
best of it is that the brush grows on
what has always been considered worth
lees alkali land, unfit for any purpose
whatever. The salt-brush not only
grows on this character of land and
makes fodder, but it draws the salt from
the soil, it is asserted, and makes other
crops possible thereon."
It is said typhoid fever is particularly
prevalent and malignant after a pro
tracted drouth. If this be true the
present waning summer conveys a men
ace that should be forestalled, if possi
ble, by prompt and intelligently applied
precautions on the part of the local
health authorities and the general pub
lic. The householder should insist on
the most scrupulous cleanliness about
the place.
. The Choctaw Indians of Mississippi
who remained behind when the rest of
the tribe moved to Indian Territory,
seventy-two years ago, afteT the treaty
of Dancing Rabbit Creek, have finally
decided to take advantage of the offer
made them of allotments in the Indian
Territory, and will move there this fall,
each getting 320 acres of land. The
Indians number 2,203.
Iu Washington county farmers are
hauling straw upon the roads with the
very beet results so far. The straw
loosely spread upon the roads prevents
deep dust from rising, and the roads do
not wear into ruts. Straw roads would
he costly in Hood River, where straw
is worth $0 a ton.
Some one who has given attention to
the improvement of the persimmon has
succeeded in producing a variety named
(old Drop that is said to be early, ex
tremely hardy, large and of good shape,
fine yellow color, flesh melting and with
very little pucker in it.
AVishing to verify the time-honored
assertion that there's always room at
the top, the junior editor of the New-
berg Graphic has been to the top of
Mount Hood.

A. T. and AV. C. Dodge are busy
building on their homesteads and are
preparing to move on them the latter
part of this month.
Charles Chandler just finished har
vesting ins crop ol uravenstein apples,
which fell somewhat short of what he
expected ; but what he had were of gopd
quality and sold readily at a fair price.
11. C. Hengst will commence harvest
ing his crop of King apples this week.
He expects a good yield and a aood
price, as there are no finer King apples
xrown in me vauey man ne nag in his
orchards; in fact all the fruit crown on
Mr. Hengst's farm is hard to beat He
takes the very best of care of his orchard
and takes pride in keeping his farm
neat and up-to-date. It will pay begin
ners in the fruit business to take a look
over Mr. Hengst's farm and get advice

Fred Chandler and Charles Stranahan
took a trip to Green Point on a fishing
expedition iasi ftaiuruay. lliey made a
good catch for the time'they were there.
Mrs. Grace Mosier and Miss Ellen
Dodge went to the Willamette valley to
pick hops two weeks ago. They write
nome mat me nop crop is extra good
this year and pickers are making good
wages The growers are jubilant and
easy to please on account of the hiiih
price they expect to get for their hops
this year.
A. T. Dodge learns through the Ore
gonian that the little settlement at
Dodge postoffice. which he established
in 1N94 and which has his name, has
ncen completely wiped from the face of
the earth by the forest fires raging there.
Every one in the settlement lost every
thing they owned but their land.
Joe Hengst had a roaring fira down in
the river Ixittom last Monday. He was
burning the slashing on the Jones place.
There were 45 acres in the slashing, and
it made such a smoke that several of
the neighbors came running down to
the Mult, thinking; that the whole earth
was on fire; but Joe kept the fire under
control so no one was damasied in thj
least. 1r- I

Tit diggers and the rattlers are re
turning to their winter quarters and the
coyotes are on their regular run.
'e are having some pretty smoky
weather and need a rain to stop the fire.
A. J. fcesi-ell is building on his home
stead wet of the valley.
William and Dennis' Dodson are haul
ing wood to Hood Kivcr.
Harry Dodson returned from Steven
son here he lias been at work in the
logging camp. The fires had run them
out of the woods.
Mr. iHslge is building on his claim.
Mr. Carueyhan has gone to visit her
laughter iu Washington.
ti'.iite a painful accident happened to
Mrs. William Dodson last week. While
she was trying to separate the cow and
calf, the cow kicked her in the face and
on the nose. She has black eyes as a
result.
Mr. and Mrs. G. AV. Mcintosh and
Mr. and Mrs. F. Fonts were visiting Mr.
and Mrs. J. O. Cameron last Sunday.
I see Mr. I of Mount Hood thinks
my partner and I have run the rattlers
out of Duke s Valley. iow it may he
some have moved south, but we can
spare more yet. I think the editor will
agree with me, for he visited us and saw
what Duke's Valley and AVillow Flat
can produce In the way of serpents.
Now, Mr. L., if you have no diggers or
coyotes we wilt divide with you again,
for we are not a selfish people. I.K.E.
