In the neighborhood of the Columbia nursery there are quite a number of substantial improvements. Mr. Upton Is building a house on laud bought of J S. Tendick. Mr. Tonny has his house nearly completed. W. A. Chapman is Snet finishing a commodious barn. Mr. lahoney', who bought part of Disbrow's place, is building a barn. Mr. Cash has nearly completed a neat house. Mr. J. Emmil is building an addition to his residence under the hill. Several more buildings are being planned for the near tuture. James DeBord has purchased the homestead right of E. R. Bradley to 150 acres of land, on the East Side, nine miles from town. Mr. DeBord expects to commute on the claim in about 14 months. The land 4s admirably situa ted for the growing of fruit trees, and in the course of time Jim will become one of the apple kings in this famous fruit section. F. H. Miller is now. running the hay baler alone, his brother Warren having withdrawn from the firm.. Mr. Miller reports the hay crop heavy this year. He haja baled so far this season about 250 tons. Last week he shipped a car load of timothy and clover mixed to the Oregon Lumber Company at Viento. Clover hay is now selling for $12 a ton ; timothy $13. The individual who appropriated the surveyor's tape reel from George P. Crowell's porch Saturday afternoon, had better return the same to John Ice land Henderson immediately. Mr. Henderson knows the guilty person and will have bim arrested if this is not done. . . 1 Lafe Little and family returned a week ago last Saturday from Vancouver, where they visited Mr. Little's uncle, W. N. Cross, for ten days. Mr. Little and family are camped at Charles Davis' reservoir, on the East Side, where they will remain unt il! they start for their new home in the Yakima country. G. W. Rowan and A. Crawford of Castle Rock, Cowlitz county, Wash., were visitors in Hood River Friday. They had been prospecting for limber claims in the country east of Mount Adams, but found tha the good timber had all been located. Mr. Rowan is a practicing attorney at Castle Rock. . Burnett Duncan made sale last week of 8 acres of his East Side farm for $900 to Charles Boardman of Sherman coun ty. He also sold a corner lot on West Oak street, near S. H. Cox's new dwell ing house, to Dr. F. C. BroBius; consid eration, $300. i. Friday & Barnes made sale last week of 10 acres of the Harry Bailey place to T. E. McGrath of Tacoma; considera tion $3,600. Mr McGrath will take pos session of his new fruit ranch the" first of September. , R. Kirbyson and family left during the week for Alsea Bay, Lincoln county, where they will sojourn for a while and, if they like the country, will remain. Eatinger has lumber on the ground to build an $800 dwelling house on his place at Belmont. B. F. Belieu has the contract to build the same. The Frankton school house recently received a fresh coat of paint. In the fall the three acres of play ground will be inclosed with a fence. Benjamin J. Barnett, who recently purchased the Chris Nicklesen property at Belmont, is preparing to build a house on the same. J. L. Blount is building an addition to Mrs. Ida Crapper's house in the coun try. The addition will be 14 x 22, story and one-half. George Knapp and family of Odell, who have been stopping in John Krce ger's house, left for Michigan last Fri day. Professor Grennell will be principal of Pine Grove school and Mips Mara Sruiih assistant. Mr. R. E. ilarbisnn and two daugh ter went to Portland Friday for week's visit. F. W. Angus sold 10 acres last week to G. W. Carr of Cowliti, Wash. The ad of Stanton & Rawson, of the Hood River nurseries, East Side of Hood river, appears in our columns today. Mr. Stanton is a well-known citizen of Hood River. His partner, C. T. Raw- son, conducted The Dalles nursery for the past ten years, and lias had much experience in the work. Mr. Rawson is now at The Dalles budding 35,000 trees. In the district there are nearly 200 children of school age. The old barn torn -down the other day to make room for the erection of E. L, Smith's brick store, was one of the old-time buildings in Hood River, having been erected shortly after George P. Crowell s store, eighteen years ago. This year's fair and carnival will embrace a number of new and novel features that will bo attractive to the people.
