THE PRETTY SPANIARD. . Imm of Belf- Pouen ion th Rol Anux the Women. Far from being the gayly dressed beauty, who raises her skirts and os tentatiously flirts behind ber fan, the typical daughter of Spain Is grave, quiet, unfailingly dignified, simple and hoine-Iovlng,. singularly affectionute In ber domestic relationships. Passionate - She can doubtless be, but passion to a Spanish woman Is a matter of life and death, far too serious a matter to be played with, and flirting is unknown to her. That Is the secret of that simple, direct bearing and speech of the Span ish woman, so free from the embarrass ing consciousness of sex, which renders a Spanish woman so charming,' with a charm in this aud Injnany other re spects so unlike that of the French woman; and the poorest of Spanish women, however gracious she may be, has no difficulty In conveying an assur ance of the fact that she belongs to her self, says a writer In the Nineteenth Century.- The saying of Tope that "most women have no character at all" would at all events not have suggested Itself In Spain, where the sense of al most self-sufficing self-possession seems to be the rule among the women of the ordinary population, who often retain both vitality and charm of manner Into old age. There is no class of the pop ulation of whom this Is not true, per haps least of all that class (ou the verge of gipsydom) which still keeps up the dances of old Spain for the Joy of an ever smaller circle. Abroad, the dances of Spain are transferred by the original skill of an Otero or a Carmenclta (Guer rero being the splendid exception); at borne they are attenuated In polite so ciety, rendered commonplace In cafes chantants, suppressed In their favorite haunts' by the unregarding Spaniard. In Seville nearly every home of real native dancing Is now closed; In Mal aga you may think you know every thing, and yet never see or hear of the Chlnltas, with Its malodorous approach, with the strange old world picture it presents within, such as one sees In seventeenth century Dutch paintings. Here one may sometimes witness the best performances in Spain. BACTERIA IN DIGESTION. Chicken Die When Fed on Sterilised Food - Certain Bacteria Needed. The results of experiments with chickens to determine the effect of in testinal bacteria upon the process of di gestion are reported by Professor Schot tellus in a recent number of the Archiv fur Hygiene, and reproduced by the Staats Zeltung, reports the Literary Di gest Chickens were kept In cages from which all bacteria were carefully ex cluded and were supplied with food equally free from bacteria. They ate ravenously and almost continually, aud evidently digested their food well, yet not only did they not fatten, but they steadily decreased in weight and strength. Another series of experiments gave direct and positive proof that the pres ence of intestinal bacteria Is necessary to nutrition. Chickens which had been hatched and raised In a sterilized en vironment, receiving only germ-free food, thrived for a week and then be gan to decline In weight and strength. Then they were divided into two groups, one of which was fed on ster ilized food, the other on food containing bacteria. All of the first group died in a few days; the others Improved rapid ly and soon were indistinguishable from chickens that bad run free in the poultry yard. Mme. Metchnlkoff hns obtained analogous results with tad poles which, fed for a time with gerni free food, attained an average weight of 25 milligrams and an average length of 15.5 millimeters, while other tad poles, fed for the same period on ordi nary food, hod an average weight of 142 milligrams and an 'average length of 26.5 millimeters. POPE LEO'8 OLD NURSE. Woman Now Over One Hand red Tears Calls at the Vatican. The Pope recently gave an audience to Anna Moroni, a woman over 100 years old, who, as a young girl, Hcted as his nurse. She was conducted over the "royal staircase," otherwise re served for sovereigns, and sat opposite the Pope in a big armchair, also an extraordinary favor, much against Vat ican etiquette. The holy father smiled benignantly on "Slgnora Anna," 'cau tioning her to rest well before she spoke. After a while the old woman commenced to talk of old times and old friends. "Do you remember when good old Auntie Protperl saved you from the bad boys on the market place in Bel letrl? They would have whipped you j sure ir auntie haun t interfered, for you were not a strong boy." The two old frleuds talked for over an bour, Dr. Lapponl occasionally In terpreting, for both Anna and Leo are bard of hearing. As she hobbled away the old woman excused herself for having given the doctor so much trou ble. "That's all right, Annina," said the holy fsther; "both of us heard so much in our long life no wonder our ears refuse to serve." Anna left the Vatican In a papal car riage, holding In her lap the golden rosary Leo had given her and a docu ment granting her an ample life pen sion, payable by the Vatican treasury. Value of Calc.um. Crematory companies would do well to note the statement of a chemist who bas determined, by painstaking analy sis, that human body of average size contains three pounds and thirteen ounces of calcium. The current quota tion of calcium Is (.100 an ounce, which would give us each a value, In the re tort, of 118,300, or one-fourth our weight in gold. . With Joj.
