FRIDAY. JL'F.Y 18, 1902.
The Glacier is in, receipt of the O. K.
& V company's latest publication,
'Oregon, Washington, Idaho and their
Resources". It is a pamphletof 72 pages,
priHtod on heavy enameled hook paper,
xploinlily illustrated, anil full of matter
descriptive of the farming.fruitgrowing,
mining and lumbering interests of the
Pacific Northwest. ' The work is the
pro luct of thB lute Colonel P. Donan
The book is intended for gratuitous dis
tribution among Eastern pleople seeking
homas in the West. . Copies will be fur
nished free to names sent to A.L.Craig,
the general passenger agent in Portland,
or U A.N. Hoar the Hood River agent of
the O.K. N. company.
The term of the preeentolflcalsatThe
Dalles land office will soon expire and
their successors will be appointed. The
jiresent incumbents Jay P. Lucas, re
gister, mid Otis Patterson, receiver, have
faithfully performed the duties of their
respective offices, and the Glacier hopes to
see them succeed themtelves. The
following from the Shaniko Leader is
true: "If it was left to the people of
this district to say who should be re
gister and receiver at The Dalles, 90 per
cent would say to retain the present in
cumbents. We hope to see the peoples'
preferenceduly respected in this matter."
The contribution in last week's Glacier
on the question of a high school was a
timely suggestion. The present lack of
a high school is argument enough that
Hood River should have one. A small
tax levied by tlie town and country dis
tricts would support a high school which
:ould be patronized by the whole valley.
If such a public institution is impracti
cable private academy should be estab
lished. The Glacier will discuss this
question at greater lenght some other
time. ' .
Grants Pass suffered a $50,000 fire
during the heavy wind storm Monday
afternoon. How would Flood River
have fared had a blaze started in the
west end of town that day
