    (ood Iftver Glacier.
FRIDAY, Jl.'LY 11, 1002.
At the Hot Springs.
Hotel St. Martin, Carson, Wash., July
4, 1902. The Glacier man, eemor, ar
rived at Carson Landing, at 12 o'clock,
on the Steamer Shaver. Got a good
dinner at the Carson house (half way to
St. Martin's). Ko conveyance being at
the landing, the passengers for St. Mar
tin's footed it the 2l4 miles.
Arrived at the Hotel St Martin at
1 :30 and found the guests and campers
assembled In the spacious ollice , room
celebrating the 4th by listening to some,
good sieeches and singing. The guests
and campers had just risen from a grand
4th of July dinner given by the land
lady, Mrs. St. Martin, in which she did
herself proud and gave a dinner that
will long be remembered by those who
partook. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Watson,
who have been in camp here for two
weeks, ilcco ated the dining room and
tables with the flowers and ferns and
evergreens that grow in abundance in
these beautiful woods. W. P. Watson
made the introductory speech after the
bftnijuet. Mr. Watson's remarks were
eloquent and appropriate to the occasion;
and he received many compliments upon
his patriotic address.- He introduced
Walter G. Hayes, an attorney of Port
land, who made a good talk and elo
quently thanked the kind hostess for
the dinner that had been served. "Mrs.
St. Martin had kindly invited all the
campers (about 45) to partake of the
dinner. Several of the ladies in the
audience sang patriotic songs, after
which J. P. Finlcy.Multnoniah county's
popular coroner, made a short address.
There are at present 24 guests in
the hotel, which canK accommodate
about 70. When the hotel i'B filled, tents
are provided for the overflow. There
are some wonderful cureseffected by tak
ing the baths in the watersof this spring.
Mrs. W. P. Watson, who came here
quite feeble, has regained her health
and is enjoying life in a homelike camp.
About 40 young people from Hood
River crossed' to White Salmon on the
Shaver on the 4th. They were bound
for liingen.and had to foot it from White
Salmon dock.
Dale Harrison is purserontheShaver.
He had been on the boat only a week,
but he handled the crowd of passengers
in good shape.
A good many passengers were picked
up along the river who were bound for
Stevenson to celebrate. Among the num
ber were Win. Orser and wife of Clieno
weth. They left their team on the hill
expecting to return on the boat this
evening, but if no boats are running, Mr.
Orser will have to foot it home this
evening.
W. P. Watson, while here last sum
mer, volunteered the labor and Mrs. St.
Martin the material to place a rope on
the lower side of the trail leading down
the hill from the hotel to the bath house.
The rope is proving a great convenience
to all in ascending or descending the
hill, and Mr. Watson has earned the
lasting gratitude of many an invalid.
July 8. The Glacier man started for
home this morning, but not finding a
boat going up the river as' he expected,
he footed it to Stevenson and there
crossed to Cascade Locks with the mail
carrier in a small boat. At Stevenson
he called at the Pioneer office and found
the editor and proprietor, Milton Har
lan, laboring at the case. The Glacier
man accepted the kind invitation of the
Pioneer editor to take dinner at his
house, and sat down and did full justice
to a most excellent meal 'prepared by
the editor's daughter. Mr. Harlan is
making Skamania comity known to the
outside world by the live newspaper, all
homo print, that he issues every wetk,
and well deserves' the support of every
resident of the county. Skamania
county is rich in minerals, timber, dairy
products, pure moiinfiii air, good
water, grand scenery, and its healthful
climate will make it a summer resort
for dwellers in the cities.
At Cascade Ixicks the Glacier man
met II. Henn, O. N. station agent,
who at one time filled the same position
in Hood, River. Mr.. Henn does all the
work of his olfice without an assistant.
The town of Cascade Locks is prosper
ous. Kvery house is occupied. A large
school house is in course of construc
tion. The saw mill company gives
steady employment to about forty men.
"Hoosler Camp."
At the Bridge, July 8, l'J02. A merry
party 28 in number, some residents of
Oregon and eome visitors, but all Hoo
sierites, real live ones too', except two,
II. K. Benson of Lebanon, Penn., but
now principal of tho Kent, Wash., pub
lic schools, and Miss Elda Brant of Fon
titnelle, Iowa.
A favorite camping place is "The
Bridge" which spans the busy little
Hood river, 17 miles south from the
city of Hood River, and 10 miles from
the snowline of Mt. Hood. It is sur
rounded by mighty forests, among which
uccasioiinlly at Bhort distances lurk the
bear, wild cat and small game. Just a
few days ago a bravo little woman
shouldered her rifle and accompanied
her husband (they were settlers) out to
his work, and seeing a suspicious .look
ing object ahead of Tier, fired at it and
down came old bruin. The scalp was
curried home in triumph.
This point is on the stago line to Mt.
Hood, and is traveled daily. It has
many conveniences, such as a telephone
and a nearby post ollice and store, while
at accommodating farm houses can tie
bought milk, butter, bread, fat chickens,
etc. Beautiful wild flowers delight the
hearts of our botanists, and the "speck
elcd mountain trout grace the table in
abundance.
Our party is proud of having a young
divine, a huly physician, an undertaker,
a merchant, school teachers, students,
farmers and children. (Hie lady, Mrs.
London of Spencer county, Ind.,'who is
years old, enjoys camp life in faraway
Oregon. . Another member of the party,
I'mle Oliver Hardness, of Tippicanoe
county, Indiana, who h 83 yivirs old,
came all the way from Hood River on
his "hike." He is one of our most suc
cessful fishermen.
Excursions are made to the mountain
either by stage, horseback or on foot.
In fact a merrier party than ours never
settled around tho lingo evening camp
fires to relate the adventures of the day,"
sing "On the Wabash faraway," or tell
artfully illustrated ghftst stories. Hood
river rushes by our camp. From the
glaciers of Mt. Hood the ever busy, hur-
rying, power-laden little river rushes on
' its way to the sea, telling in ceasless
voices of harmony to each passerby of
its storedup strength and power," in
w hieli it longs to bless niandkiud. Such
days sHnt in communion with kindred
spirits, and in God's ow n storehouse of
sweetly laden air, are health and bless
ing to tiredont, workworn hands and
b , di -s. Over all grand old Hood towers
as a sentinel to remind us of tiud's
great gramlness, nmjestv and power.
E. C.
Wade McLain of Nicolai, experienced
a hold up last Saturday ninht. He had
returned to the Oregon side of the river
lroai l.at amas, Wash., where he sient
the 4tli,snd when a shortdistance lclow
Latourelle station, two well dressed
young men appeared on the track and
demanded his money. One held him
wliile the otner took what little money
he had and bis father' watch. The
Ihv told the brutes that this was all hi;
moiiev and that lie must bnv a ticket
home. They returned 50 cents. Wade
boarded the train and the conductor
kindly brought him home. Wade is 14
years old.
Geo. Knapp was called to Sherman
county, Wednesday, to again take charge
of his crew of bridge builders on the
Columbia Southern railroad.
The business of the Hood River post
, ntliev has necessitated the putting in of
an additional section of 48 lock boxes.
The' waters of the Columbia are again
on the rise.

Hood River. Ore:,July 8.1902. Editor
Glacier: Hood River, with its adjacent
territory is in need of advanced educa-1
tional facilities. With this. thought in
mind, the writer has consulted a number
of the leading citizen), and has found
encouragement in every instance. It is
thought that an academic or college
preparatory course of study could be es
tablished and successfully maintained.
Under able instructors, such a course
can be pursued here with as satisfactory
results as in a college, for there is little
or no laboratory work connected with
the preparatory department of college
work. . i'liuu, the expense would be very
much lessened, for the student could
board at home.. An average tuition fee
would, with a reasonable number of
students, justify the attempt.
In order that those interested may
know he sentiments of the parents and
young people of Hood River valley,
White Salmon and other adjacent com
munities, all who are favorable to such
a movement, are . requested to corres
pond with the writer. If sufficient in
terest is manifested, a mass meeting
will be called for the purpose of formu
lating plans, etc. Whatever is done
nius( be done quickly for the fall of the
year will soon be here. Young people
who are contemplating advanced work
are especially nrged to express them
selves concerning this proposition. The
writer will be pleased to meet personally
all who are at least willing to investi
gate the feasibility of the matter.
