The Grand Army at Astoria.
The state encamCiient of tbe Grand
Army of the Republic at keton'a, last
week, will long be remembered with
pleasure by all who were in attendance.
The patriotic city of Astoria did itself
proud in welcoming theOranuArmvanco

the (i.A.R. Comrade who have been at
tending these gatherings for many years
gay that all former attempts at wel
coming the old soldiers were cant in the
(shade by the rousing welcome of the
city by the Hounding sea.
Astoria is a.?ity of 10,000 population,
and all seemed to be on their good be
havior while the old soldier were in
town and vied with each other in doing
honor to the men who saved the Union
40 yearn ago. Flags w aved over the house
tops and many residence' and stores
wese beautifully decor.ated with bunting
and other evidences of the warm wel
come extended.
The weather was showery and threat
ening up to the hour for the parade to
start, and from that hour until the
clot of the encampment pleasant weath
er prevailed. The clerk of the weather
for that section, evidently, was a Union
man. The march was rather long for
some of the old veterans, but few fell
out of line. In looking down the line one
could see that the old veterans were not
too feeble to make a good appearance in
marching to the good music furnished
by the Astoria band. They marched
off with that same old sw inging gait that
characterized their marches 40 years
ago. This march was about half a mile
and then, the column countermarched.
Tlie W. It, C. and ladies of therti. A. K.
also marched. , The prettiest sight of
the whole encampment was to see
the school children. Eight hundred of
them were in the march or drawn up
in line along the sidewalks in charge of
their teachers, and as the old soldiers
passed, trie children waved flags and
cheered. The old soldiers will never
forget this pretty ovat on. The reception
Wednesday evening filled the large
opera house, where the mayor of Astoria
gave the veterans the freedom of the
city. Hon. Chas. Fulton made an
eloquent sjeech of welcome On
Thursday a free excursion to Ft.
Stevens was given the Grand Army, W.
It. C. and ladies of the G. A. K. on the
railroad. It was a great treat to the
old soldiers to be received in the fort and
shown the workings of the big guns.
This is a privilege granted only , to the
favored few. Department Commander
Sladen got permission for the Grand
Army to visit the fort from the secre
tary of war.
M. L. Pratt of Sumner post, East
Portland, was elected department com
mander for the ensuing year, and Port
land w as chosen as the next place of
meeting.

Hood Kiver might have ecurd the
encampment next yearjf the Hood Kiver
mcnilters could have promised that we
could take take care of the crowd. Every
oiie'fceemed to want to come to Hood
Kiver. Before the time for another en
campment rolls around Hood River pew
ple should get together and see what we
could promise the encampment if the
old soldiers should honor us by voting
to come here.
Canity post had the best representa
tion at the encampment, according to
its numbers, of any xit in the depart
ment. Our wt was honored by the
election of A. S. Blowers as member
of the council of administration andS.F.
Klvtlie as alternate delegate ts the
national encampment at aehington.
I. D. Blount was the biggest man at
the encampment. He thoroughly en
joyed the trip, and when he got a crowd
about hi in to listen to bis w ar stories,
lie seemed supremely happy.

count of the loss of his limb in battle,
and he could draw an appreciative and
sympathetic audience whenever he gave
his war experience.
W. J.Smith, now residing at Astoria
with his family, hunted up tbe Hood
River crowd. He was visited at his
home, and also at the mill where he
is employed, and himself and were
found family pleasantly situated.
Col. Sydney Dell, an old friend and
acquaintance of the Glacier man, gave
Hood River a good write up of about
half a column 111 his paper, the Daily
News.
The Hood River crowd all had rooms
at the Cole house, where everything
was first class and charges reasonable.
The ladies of the G. A.R.captured all the
comrades of Canby post at the encamp
ment. A committee of this order wait
ed upon the encampment and invited
all its members to their hall to partake
of refreshments. About 40 members ac
cepted the invitation, and before they
got out of the hall they had all taken
the obligation and joined the ladies of
the G. A. R. This organization is com
posed of the wives and blood relations
only of civil war veterans. It is not
their object to start a circle of the order
where a relief corps exists.
Commander Bladen, with an eye
for . the fitness of things, selected
the best looking members of the
encampment to act upon commit
tees to visit the Relief Corps and Ladies
of the G. A. R., and of course the Hood
River delegates were frequently (ailed
upon for this duty. Comrades Blount,
Blowers and Rand did the honors
grandly when presenting and introduc
ing a committee of ladies to the encamp
ment. E. B. Clark who is a clerk in one of
the departments of Fort Stevens; hunted
up the Hood River folks on the excur
sion. Mr.Ciark has a good position and
the service has a good clerk in the per
son of E. B. Clark.
The escaped convicts are surrounded
in a body of timber near Gervais. Their
capture, dead or alive, is most certain.
