The souvenir calendar gotten out and sold by the ladies' aid of the U. B. church is a work of art. The printing was done by E. R.Bradley, Hood River's job printer. The calendar shows that we needn't go away from home to get good job printing. Rowley Phelps was badly scalded about the face, one day last week, with hot water lie allowed to come to a boil in a tin bucket on the stove, with a lid on the bucket, lie-now wears his face in a sling. Rowley is not as pretty as he was but he knows more. Geo. Rordan, Son & Co. have become members of the American Angora Goat Breeder's Association, whose headquar ters are at Kansas City, Mo. The depu ty inspector for the association, located at Portland, was up Tuesday of last week and registered their goats. County Clerk A. E. Lake was in Hood River last Friday on business connected with his office. Mr. Lake reports plen ty of work in his oflice for himself, his assistant, Mr. Bolton and a lady clerk. During the months of,October and No vember $400 in excess of the salaries in the clerk's oflice were covered into the county treasury. Jackson &. Firebauh have the contract for painting the K. of P. hall. They will also do the painting and decorating for the two new store rooms in the Fri day building. Schwartz, who came to Hood River a month ago to act as trustee for the Denver Clothing Store, was called to i-an francisco on Monday to take a res' ponsible clerkship in the board of pub' lie works of that city. He passed the civil service examination some time ago and was third on the list for this appoint ment.but the political power at that time disregarded the law and made appoint ments of others w ho came after him in tne line. Mr. Schwartz is a verv cana. ble and competent man for thisappoint ment. He at one time held a clerkship in me noaru ot supervisors of Kan Jrran cisco. The Glacier congratulates him upon ins success. Canby Post, G. A. R. and W. R. C, tielu good meetings Saturday. 1. M. Amen of the 14Hth Illinois and M. F. Jacobs of the 1st Minnesota were ad mitted to the post by card. There was much rivalry tor the different offices in the post, but the election went off har moniously. The following officers were elected: uommander, J. W. Rnrbv: Senior .Vice Commander, J. B. Rand; Junior Vice Commander, S. L. Taylor; tiuartermaster, L. Henry; Surgeon, L. u. mount unaniam. r. i. ralkins: Officer of the Day, D. G. Hill ; Officer of the Guard, w. T. llansberry. Rev. J." W. Jenkins has accepted a call from the Valley Christian church for another year. This will be Mr. Jenkins' eighth year as pastor of this church. The call was the unanimous expression of the official board and the members of the church. Mr. Jenkins, by his courteous manner and deep religious zeal, has endeared himself to every one acquainted with him and his work in the valley. Hereafter, Mr. Jen kins' whole time will be given to the work in Hood River, his salary having been raised to meet this agreement. The entertainment given by the ladies' aid society at the gymnasium hall last Friday evening was largely attended. The programme was interesting through out. The gymnastics by the young men were heartily applauded and called forth much favorable comment in favor of the gymnasium. The ladies sold quite a number of their calendars and those who ordered them ,but have not yet had orders filled will find them for sale at liartniess' furniture store and at Mr.Itradley's news stand. Ed Miller of Viento was in town Sat urday. From him we learn that the literary entertainment at that place Friday to raise money for a Christmas tree, was a grand success. A good pro gramme was rendered and receipts amounted to $12. A literary society has since been organized to meet every Sat urday night. Mr. Miller and family will move to their homestead at Mt. Hood this week. He has a house built and will go to work at once preparing to plant apple trees in that productive ap ple belt. E. D. Calkins, agent for the Horse Re view, now has the annual Christinas numlter of this excellent publication for sale. Every admirer of the horse will want to possess himself of a copy of this Christmas number. It is a large book, profusely illustrated and full of litera ture on the horse. J.P.Hillstrom asks that his neighbors let up on trying to coax his children to run away. He his other grievances with his neighbors he asks us to publish but the Glacier's advice would be for him to take his case to the justice's court. Sum Bartmess is having an addition built to his store room, bringing it out to the street. M. A. Cook, with a force of carpenters, is doing the work. When finished, Bartmess' furniture store will have the handsomest front in town. Rev. J. W. Jenkins has been confined to the house with lagrippe for the past ten days, and was not able to fill his pulpit on Sunday last. But he is im proving and hopes to be able to preach next Sunday. Turkey Shooting. Monday, Dec. 23d, at J. R. Jones' place, on the Belmont road. Lots of turkeys on hand. Shoot ing will commence at 9 o'clock. The gymnasium will be open next Friday evening at 8 o'clock for men. This is by request of a number of busi ness men. All men are invited to this first meeting. - Our old friend Van Johnson treated the Glacier t a fine lot of big red apples. Nothing would have been more accept able for a Christmas present. The want ad inserted by Coe & Son in last week's Glacier, offering prizes for the first and second best efforts in the line of poetry on the subject of Coe's peanuts, received 61 answers. The con test closed Wednesday, at 4 o'clock, when the verses were given to two of the teachers of the public school to award the prizes. It was haind that 61 poets had sent in their contributions. The contestants were limited to four lines. The verses were numbered and given to the judges, so that they did not know the names of the contestants. The first prize, a box of candies, was award ed to Mrs. A. Winans, No. 30, and the second prize, a bag of peanuts, to Gil lespie Lockman, No. 49. A Christmas tree will be prepared and a general invitation is extended to the community to join their Christmas eve festivities. Mrs. John A. Price and son of Kings' ley are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Amen. A party of Fremasons and their wives went to f ortiand to attend the annual banuuet siven bv the Washington chan ter, Royal Arch Masons. Hood River lodge was invited to be the guests of the evening.
