od Iftver Slacier. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1901. A correspondent of the Oregonian who visited the Pajaro valley apple-growing sectidn in California thinks it no better than the Willamette valley forthe grow ing of apples. Apple land in the Pujaro v11.?v Bella for 1500 an acre, while in the Willamette valley it can be bought for $50 an acre. Red apples are not a suc cess in the Pajaro valley. They grow the Yellow Bellflower and Yellow New town Pippin, which are shipped in im mense quantities to the Eastern and European markets. Their crop this year will reach a million and a quarter boxes. The Willamotto valley, like Hood River, has better transportation facilities and with the same care and at tention to selecting orchard ground, there should be more money in growing ap ples in Oregon than in the noted Pajaro valley of California. The county court of Umatilla county has required thesteU range and buggy traders to pay the peddlers' license. Several carloads of steel ranges and a large number of buggies were sold to farmers. This was considered an in justice to local dealers who pay taxes and spend their earnings in the county and contribute to the good of the com munity. The prohibitionists met in mass con vention in Portland last week and placed a full state ticket in the field for the election next June. Our townsman, Rev. F, R. Spaulding.was nominated for congress. If there was any show for his election. Mr. Soaulding could get a majority in Hood River. Death of Em He Schanno. Hon. Emile Schanno, horticultural commissioner for thjs district, died at his home in The Dalles, Dec. 6, 1901, of heart tailnre. Mr. Schanno was born in Alsace-Lorai'iie in 1840 and came to the United States in 1853. Since 1863 lie has been a resident of The Dalles, As a member of the state board of hor ticulture he was energetic in the dis charge of the duties of his ollice and took a deep interest in the work. His death" is regretted bv a laruo circle of friends. . Trout Lake Items. Saturday morning the ground was covered with a beautiful coat of snow, but the next day it was all gone again and we were getting the same old thing, rain Miss Sophia and Willie Stadtlman at tended the Artisans' ball at White Sal mon on Thanksgiving day. . ' , J. Aernimadeatripto WhiteSalmon a few days ago and spent a few days in The Dalles betore returning. An Artisans' social was given at J. Aemi's on Saturday, Dec. 7th. -A large crowd was present and a nne time w as had bv all. Dancina and playing was indulged in till the wee hours of mom ing. We are informed that II. J. Byrkett sold his ranch, including all tns cattle to Timothy Evens of The Dalles. The consideration was $3500. We learn that W. T. Stadelman is go ing to start a general nierchandisestore He already has a lot of goods on hand In the surma he will build a large nun the lower part of which will be used for a store, and tne upper part tor ine Arti sans meetings. B. C. Hamilton was out here a few days last week. Several parties are getting logs cut and preparine to take them to the saw mill as soon as the snow falls. Y Bright Outlook for Strawberry Crop G. J. Gessling, Secretary of the Hood River Fruit Growers' Union, returned from his Eastern trip Monday morning having been gone four weeks.' On his way East he stopped off at Ogden, Salt Lake. Denver, Lincoln, Omaha and Council Bluffs, and talked strawberries and apples with the principal commis sion men in those places and also with retailers of Hood River fruit. On the return trio lie stonned over in the nrin cipal towns along the line of the Great Northern. At every place he stopped commission men and retail dealers were well acquainted with Hood Utver berries They wanted to know all about the "strawberry trust" we have in Hood River. They said they had to pay more for Mood Kiver berries since the "trust controlled the output At every place lie stopped he was assured that more Hood Kiver berries than ever would be wanted next year. Mr. Gessling is sat isfied from what he learned on his trip that there will be a good demand for our strawberry crop at good prices next year. He found that a personal inter view with the men who- buy our fruit was much more satisfactory than corres pondence by letter. In Chicago, St Paul and Minneapolis he lound good markets for apples, and posted himself with regard toshipping apples nextyear, When Hood River may exiiect to have a full crop. , Plant Rose Buslics. Fred V. Hohnan, a well known attor ney of Portland, in last Sundny's Ore gonian, had a lengthy article on roses in which be gave instructions for thei culture and suggests that everybody in the city plant rose bushes next springand prepare a surprise for the thousands of Easterners that will attend the Lewis and Clark centennial in 1905. This is happy thought in time, and the sug gestion will be acted upon bv others other towns in tin Northwest. Mr. Hoi- man's suggestion will no doubt be acted upon by Portland people and Portland will I known as the Hose tit v. Hood River can come in on tins rose planting scheme. We have the lawnt and the water to irrigate them, and all can lie made a thing of lieauty by pro fusely decorating them, like some few have done in the past, with the choicest of rose bushes. Let Hood River begin now to plant rose bushes for 1905. Rev. C. S. Gilbert, whom I knew us chaplain of the 2d Oregon U. S. volun teer, was endeared to every man in the regiment. He was the men's friend in the field as well as in the barracks, car rying water on the firing lines or loan ing men stamps for their letters home. Visiting the sick and wounded in their affliction or changing American gold in to Spanish pesos and conducting reli gious services under difficulties. He is a forceful speaker, knows, he has a mes sage to impart and how to deliver it. F. ('. Bkosh s. John W. Gunn, special aent and ad juster for the Liverpool & J-otidoii & Globe Insurance Co., was in town Mou ' day. Mr. Gnnn likes Hood River and may take a notion aomedav ti buy a piece of Hood River apple land and lo cate with n and grow up with- the country. II. It. R. & T. t'o. -At the meeting of the stockholders of the Hood River Boom and Transporta tion Co., held Tuesday, the following board of directors was elected to serve fur the ensuing year: C. A. Bell, Geo. P. Crowell, P. 8. Davidson, Geo. T. Prather and J. E. Rand. The secretary and treasurer's reports showed the com pany to lie in good shape. It is in debt , but, the big dam on the East Fork of Hood river and the boom at the mouth of the river are now in shape to earn money for the company, and when the delinquent assessments are paid up. there will be nionev enough to meet all debt. It is hoped delinquent subscrib ers to the stock of the company will see their way clear to pay the assessments now due. The real estate owned by the company is valuable. The Lost Lake Lumber Lo , which tooK nan tne buh-.k n the Boom company, and P. S. David son are the largest creditors, but they do not ask for immediate payment of their claims. The Lost Lake Lumber Co. will take their pay in the use of the clam and boom for getting logs. The saw mill company, of course, receives or will receive the greatest uenent irom me Boom company, but as one of the stock holders expressed it, he would double his investment for stock in the Boom company rather than have the saw mill move away. . Thanksgiving Donations. In respons to the circular mailed from the county superintendent's office a few days prior to Thanksgiving day, the public schoolshavedonated liberally to the support ot trie iwys ana uins aiu society of Portland, the Hood Kiver 1 muster and Livery uo. carried to tne I). P. and A. N. Co. a landing all dona tions free of charge fortrausferasfreight. The Hood Kiver schools sent one box of apples, one sack of cabbage, two cases rnnntd eixxlH. one suck potatoes, oriea fruit, bundle clothing, and 80 ceiitscashJ Besides what the llood Kiver senooi contributed, there was sent last Tuesday from Pine Grove school, four sacks ol potatoes, one of beans, one of dried prunes, one of cabbage, .one box of up- apples, one box of canned fruit, etc. from ttie Grapper school, one suck oi dried prunes, one package clothing, two glasses ot jolly and fl.-'O in casn. The Dalles school and Boyd Bchool sent liberal donations, and the institu tion had a man there to receive and ship these and other donations. When if is-more tuny realized wnai an auxiliary this institution is to tne public schools and society m general, the aid for it will be even more liberal until such time as the slate will more materially support it. What Becomes of the Money, During three years ending July, 1901, I have collected and turned over to Was co county $336,004.83. I have frequent ly been asked what becomes of all of the money. By way of explanation I will take the taxes collected for the year 1900, amounting to $100,946.47, showing the different channels into which it is dis tributed. - School District. N. Clarke. The Western Fruit Grower, of St. Joseph, Mo., says strawberry growers are encouraged over the showfngof their old plantations since the fall rains. Many beds which had been marked to be plowed up will be left. Strawberries promise to be high again next season, but not high enough to pay for inferior fruit. - ' A new apple pest has made its appear ance in Missouri.
