ood ltiver Slacier. FRIDAY, AUGUST Hi, 1001. Mood River's crop of bluckberries in light this year iiml will fall short a thousand or nifc crates of the average crop of TiHK) crates. Prices arc good, most of the berries being liilli'il out at f I.K) per crate Ah much money can be miuli-off the Mine area in blaeklicr rien us from strawberries, and with a lrent. deal less expense and work an acre in blackberries will produce !!00 or more crates of fruit. lMacklicrries rien a month after tins strawberry crop linn been gathered, and they reipiire very little attention during the strawberry .season, (i. J. (iessling, secretary of the llvod River Fruit Growers' Union, saj h he would not advise the farmers to raise blacklM-rries extensively, but he thinks there is money in them if handled in the right way. What the farmers should do, ho Kays, is to experiment for a variety which will give quality rather than quantity. If Hood River fruitgrowers expect to make anything in hlackberric they must chip a brand that will hold the markets as does the Clark's Seedling strawberry. Hood River blackbcrrie are crowded out of the Montana markets by the Puyallup berries for the same reason that our straw berries crowd out California and Southern berries be- cause they are superior in quality. The fruitgrowers here don't give enough at tention to marketing the blackberries and they depend too much on planting a prolific variety rather than securing variety of high quality. Last week the Hood River Fruit Growers' Union mad a shipment of three varieties of black berries to Raker City, and the report of the consignee on the condition of the different berries is interesting. They were all shipped for first-class berric The crate containing I.awton hurries "was in good order and looked quite nice;" the crate of Slingerlanil berric "was hardly so good," and the orate of Kittituny berries "was not nearly good." Continuing, the report stated that "the two latter crates had too many red looking berries in them and were quite soft. Had thev been held over nn . til tomorrow they would have bee about Soiled." G. J. t Iessling, secretary of the Hood River Fruit Growers' union, says that although Hood Rivers crop of winter apples will not lie so large as last year the prices will be enough better to more than even up the returns with last year w hen the apple crop brought $00,000 into the valley. The union recently received a request from a Chicago commission house for prices on a consignment of r0,000 or 100,000 bushels of winter ap pies delivered in bulk. The demand for Hood River apples increases faster than the supply, and when the orcharding learn to thin out the fruit, give the trees thorough cultivation and spraying, they w ill he assured of good crops each year and will have an investment paying bet ter dividends than most gold mines. Hood River is one of the best adver tised fruit communities in the state, just now. The Hood River Fruit Growers' Union and the Davidson Fruit Co. had 5,000 circulars printed containing their report of the Hood River strawberry crop, printed in the Glacier two weeks ago, and part of the Hood River article from the Practical Fruit Grower. These folders are being placed in every lette sent out by the fruit unions. The Pa cilic Express Co. took 1,000 of the cir culars, and A. I.. Craig, general pas senger agent of the O. R. & N., 500. The railroad company will incorporate the statistics into their general advertising matter. . The Glacier is indebted to S. T. Howe fur late Texas papers. In the Texas Fruit Grower we read of a new variety of apple known as Mayn't) Everbearing The fruit begins to ripen in Texas about August 10th and continues ripening till late in- winter; and ripe apples have been gathered from the tree afterChrist mas. It iH claimed to be a valuable ad dition to horticulture. The trees sell for a dollar apiece. The work of establishing street grade and sidewalks in the business district and the putting in of a sewer system for the town cannot be begun too quickly Thf business interests and the health of the town are demanding both. hen the railroad ollicials come here next week, thev will rind Hood River line of the most prosperous and sub stantial little communities in the state If we expect substantial business buildings the town must prepare proper street grades and sidewalks. Horticulturists at Xenlu-rg. Hon. E. L. Smith returned Monday from Newberg, where be attended the annual mid-summer meeting of the Ore- gon state horticultural society. The meeting, Mr. .Smith reports, was well at tended aim a number ot interesting and instructive papers and lectures were pre sented. The eminent horticulturist, rrotessor tfailey, ot the state agricultur al college, at Cornell, New York, was present and gave several lectures Among the prominent inut men of the state there were present Hon. E. L. Smith of Hood River; Dr James Withy combe and Professors Lake, Cordlev aiid Kniselyof Corvallis; Horticultural Com missioner W. K. Newell of Dillev;E. I Infer of Salem, and Dr. J. R. Cardwcll of Portland. From the Oregonion's report of the meeting we clip the following: "Hon. E. L. .Smith of Hood River, familiarly known as'llmal River Smith,' president of the state board of horticul ture, talked inspiringly upon the suli ject of 'Qualification and Organization.' His thoughts were pungent!)' expressed and his address heartily received. He depicted the changed conditions in hor ticulture, Hud dwelt strongly on the need of live, highly educated fruitgrowers and agriculturists, who can keep pace with new conditions. Horticulture has be come a scientific pursuit. "Mr. Smith SHike aggressively of the necessity of 'the scientific education of the sons and daughters of the tillers of the soil.' Too many of the f irmer hovs, ! in his estimation, are making of them selves mediocre professional men, when they might live happier lives and serve their fellow men better in some rural calling. He pleaded for an awakening on the subject of agricultural training, and booed to see the day w hen our agri cultural schools, devoted to agriculture only, will be controlled by intelligent fanners and horticulturists, when every ollicer from president down w ill be per meated w ith the idea that 'agriculture is the noblest of nil callings and that upon its broad base rests every useful science know n to man.' "As to organization, the speaker stated that it was now a matter of necessity and not of choice. This is the day when corporations nud not individuals trans act the business of the world, and the fruitgrowers must realize the fact and., organize themselves into eo-oerative fruit unions, which help to educate their members in better methods in every department in their industry, and consequently promote intelligence and bring them to more united and harmo nins relations. "In conclusion, 'we need an extension board to capture new markets. We must revolutionize many of our former methods, cultivate the highest standards of excellence, through qualification and organization.' " The (I'hieiers or Mount HimmI. Professor Harry Fielding Reid, of Johns Hopkins university, lias returned to Portland from hi visits to Cloud Cap Inn and Mount Adams, where he was engaged in examining the glaciers, on w hich he is one of the foremost authori ties in the United States. Professor Reid is an enthusiastic mountaineer, and the observations he has made on the glaciers of Mount Iks id are of great interest and scientilic importance. Regarding his trip, Professor Reid said to an Oregonian reporter: "I left Port land three weeks ago for Cloud Cap Inn, mid my stay there was most delightful. I have never found n more charm ing place in the mountains than Cloud Cap Inn, and I wr i given every attention there I examined four glaciers Eliot, Coe, I.aild and New ton Clark. 1 did not get around far enough to see closely the Sandy river and the Zigzag glaciers on this t'rip. On these glaciers 1 found evi dences of the ri'treat of the ice. The glaciers are growing smaller, and there iH no doubt that the movement is con tinuing at the present. The glaciers are much smaller than they have Ik-cii in the past. Glaciers shorten and then lengthen again. "The cause is this? It is due to cli matic variations. The climate grows warmer and drier, ami then colder and wetter. These changes alter the quanti ty of the snowfall, and the average goes up and down. Ill Europe, these chainies have la-en observed for a period of years, so that it is known that these changes occur at t J . - rate of about three a century. In th... country the observa tions have not been made a sulhcient length of time to calculate, their fre quency. This is an important field for observation, and will be followed out closer in the future than it has U-en in the past." For Hunters. For the information of hunters it is here stated that the open season for doe will commence next Thursday. The open season for buck deer commenced July 15th. The closed season for both buck and doe w ill liegin November 1st. Spotted fawn cannot be killed any time. Deer cannot be legally killed before 30 minutes before sunrise anil after one hour after sunset. "It shall be unlawful at any time to hunt or pursue aitv deer, antelope or moose w ith dog or dogs, with intention to kill or injure such deer, antelope or moose; and it shall be unlawful for any person to take, capture or kill or destroy in any open season more than five deer.'' It w ill not he law fill to kill elk at any time prior to Septemlx-r 15, 1004. The open season for pheasant and quail is August 1st to November 1st. The open season for prairie chicken is August 15th to November 15th. It will not be j legal to kill any lil white quail until October 15, 1005. TtTsave H er Ch i Id From frightful disfigurementMrs. Nannie Gallegerof LaGrange, da., applied Buck len's Arnica Salve to great sores on her face and head, and w rites its quick cures ex ceeded all her hopes. It works wonders in sores, bruises, skineruptions, cuts, burns, scalds and piles. 25c. Cure guaran teed by Chas. N. Clarke. Carnival at Port laud. The business men of Portland have subscribed $15,000 to guarantee the ex penses of a carnival to be held in the ex position building from Sept. IStoOct.lO. A notable exhibit of all the industries of the Pacific Northwest will lie made in the big exposition building, and athletic exercises, a horse show and a military tournament will be held on Multnomah field adjoining. Two full military bands have been engaged, and there will be many tine features in the amusement line. The carnival is in charge of a com mittee comprising 28 representative bus iness men, of which Gen. Owen Sum mers is president, I. N. Fleischner vice president, A. P. Steinbach treasurer, and D. Mann secretary. With such men at the head of the affair, the carnival is sure to be well worth visiting. Hard on Time. No wonder time is represented as hag gard and worn out, says an exchange. A watch keeps time, the chorfster beats time, the clock strikes time, trams run on time, horses run against time, people mreaten to ao things on time it they cau get time, soldiers mark and double time, criminals serve time, tew can spare time, at a prize right they call tiine, every one now and then tries to kill time perhaps your subscription is be hind time.
