Mr. lleiinemau is interested in fruit cul ture and has recently visited the fruit growing sections of the Columbia valley, from Idaho to Hood River. Frank Chandler, who is traveling agent for the Wet more Tobacco Co., returned to Hood River last week for a few days vacation. He was in Iowa and Missouri during the recent hot spell and says no one can portray by tongue or pen the terrible effects of the heat in the drouth stricken states. Elder C. A. Wyman will review the position of the church of Latter Day Saints upon n Daniel, respecting the feet of the image and the stone that smites the same. A man with a ''slight" foreign ac cent called at the post office to inquire for mail for his friend Jack. He told the vonng lady clerk that, he had forgotten jack's other name, but said, "You yoost call off the names on all the letters ami when vou come to 'YaekV name I'll know it." The lady clerk laughed at the idea and refused to call off the names. The liailev Gatzert hail an accident Tuesday morning breaking a pitman strap, just as she was passing St. Johns, and had to return to Portland. Repairs will ail be made and the boat w ill start Friday morning on regular time. Mrs. George Watts, who has been visiting Mrs. Laura Baldw in, spent three weeks with her neice, Mrs. George Tab ler of Portland, and returned Monday on the Gatzert. Mr. Carson, who was chief clerk of the quartermaster's -department at Aparri, is accompanying Captain Povey to the states. Messrs. Bigelow and Tilton, who, for the past month, have been soliciting memliers for the Ancient Order of the Red Cross, proved themselves thorough gentlemen, and their work shows them to be rustlers. Billy Hay of Mouier was in tow n, .Mon day. He has a tine farm at that place, which supports him without work in his old age. Sixty acres of corn on his place this year promise a good yield. Rev. J.
