The Oregon text hook commission, in
selecting a United States history for
high school purposes, chose an exhaust
ive volume entitled "American Govern
ment," recently compiled hy Ir. Trunk
Strong, president of the University of
Oregon, and Joseph Schaffer, assistant
professor of history in that institution.
The selection of the new puhlicalion
was made! in preference to hundreds, of
other treatises faibtnittod on the same
Huhjirt. Ir. Strong, hefore bcingeullod
to Oregon for this presidency of the uni
versity, was a professor ill the depart
ment of history at Yale, He is a thor
ough master of his suhject, and the
commission made an excellent selection.
With its last issue tin- Antelope lie

Tin; Davidson Fruit ( inincry.
The Davidson Fruit cannery put up
seven or eight tons of Portland cherries
last week." This kept 40 women and
children busy for three or four days,
and amounted to 250 cases of the canned
product. The high price for strawber
ries prohibited the cannery from putting
up hut a few cases this year. Last year
the cannerv turned out about 15 carloads
of canned fruit, hut so far this year the
fruit company has barely succeeded in
securing fruit enough for half a car.
Other fruits are yet to come in, and the
cannery expects to secure several pear
crops from The Italics, and will get to
matoes from White Salmon and Wyeth.
The cannery has yet to work with the
disadvantage of a lack of fruit. With
plenty of fruit the cannery could employ
150 hands, and easily dispose of all the
goods put up. Another disadvantage
against which the local cannery has to
contend is the dictation of prices for
canned fruit by the California Cannery
association. First class Hood Jiiver fruit
comes too high to admit of competition
with the cheaper California grades. The
canned product marked llooil River
fruit hy the Davidson cannery is made
from superior fruit only. Second grade
goods are branded "Columbia Fruits."
Until Hood River farmers can produce
more fruit, the cannery business here
cannot he very extensive.
The commodious warehouse of the
Davidson Fruit company has been re
cently lilted up for cold storage purposes,
and affords now a capacity for 15,000
boxes of apples. The building is thor
oughly frost proof, and the company is
now prepared to buy large quantities of
good-keeping winter apples, or to offer
storage room for rent. I!y means of a
gravity elevator this warehouse affords
the best means in town for loading fruit
cars. The platform landirg extends the
length of three cars, and a fruit, car hold
ing 700 crates may be loaded in to
minutes.
Oregon Apples Noticed.
Ihill'alo Commercial, July IJtli.
Several boxes of luscious apples were
ridded yesterday to the Oregon exhibit.
The apples came from Hood River val
ley, Oregon. This little valley is 20
miles long and from four to six miles
wide; it lies at the foot of Mount Hood,
a snow-capped mountain 14,0(10 feet
high. The valley is 2,500 feet above sea
level. The streams running through
the valley are filled with trout, and
when one tires of growing apples he can
rest in the shade, whiling away an hour
catching large and delicious mountain
trout.
There is no place in the world where
npplesjuid peaches grow to such per
fection as in this particular locality. The
apples received yesterday had not been
in cold storage, yet they came in excel
lent condition. For market apples they
arc! unexcelled.

death of John Markley, which occurred
at hi home at (i a. m. lie was a man
of more than ordinary ability and intel

up in his home. He detested hypocrisy
and deceit in thought, word or deed.
He was unselfish, always trying to see
how much good he could do for others.
Mr. Markley was not a member of any
church; he had a belief tliat, was pecu

He advocated and practiced charity for
all, counting church members among
many of bis nearest friends. JulylSiii
the burial services were carried out in
every detail, as he had often w hen in
health expressed that they should be.
The interment was in the family lot in

deeply mourn their loss, they will still
be thankful that they had his love so
many years, anil that their lives will be
made better by reason of such memories
will be the prayer of wife and children.
