s i i Qd Iiver Slacier. FRIDAY, JULY 19, l'.iOI. The Mailer Still Moves. The (ilucicr Iiiih a new press. The progressive ileniundrt of the cuiMiniinily necessitated I lie move ill order that the (ilucier keep up with the procession. The new pres in n Cnniphcll cylinder, nml Boon a possihle. will he oj .it;i In I hv motor power. The prosa was purchased of the Auierienu T pe Pounders. Co. lit Portland, and the company' export machinist, A. IL Smith, wan enpiyed during the week in Netting it With tlii presa the (ilaeier can be enlarged or romo out daily without much addi tional appliance and on nliort notice. The meager demands of the (ilacier for presn capacity when it. Hturtcd 12 years little evidence that, u power press would Ih- needed for yearn tocoine, but IIikmI liiver Iuih grown since that time, and the (dueier iiouurdinolv ban evpamled until the old hand preen wan rotisalered intiilcipiate for the purpose. We don't hit-ail to be left behind, and other improvements w ill follow hhMc n in tx Ih dictate. The (ilacier put in iti first appear ance in yie month of June, IHH',1, f s a five-column folio. Jude ( le. T.l'riither WUH the originator of the experimental Hclienie to publish a newspaper forllood River, at which time the paper wan printed in tlie old Wasco County Sun olIicentThe Dalles, Mr. Pruther fur li i nlii the localvnid news, items from Hood River anil manainn the husim-Hs nffairH of the paper. After a throt luontliH' trial, in September, 1KHII, Jolm II. CrudlehaiiKh, at that time editor of the Wasco Comity Sun, bought out Mr. l'rnther and established the ( ilacier in Hood River and enlarged to a six-column paper. After live yearn' trial, with insurance work and a small law practice on the side, Mr. Cradhdiaugh concluded there. was nothing in the newspaper business in Hood River for him, and Hold out to the present publisher. The Ohtcier had in fact been established long before iW time, but with patience and endurance and tin occasional paid Hiibscript ion, the advertising patronage of the paper increased until, in September, I. Hlli), it became necessary to add a sev enth column to the paper. The (!hieier'oday is established on a business basis and its patrons recognize its worth as an advertising medium. During the seven years the present pro prietor has had charge, the Glacier has awaited patiently the growth of its sub scription list and increase of advertising patronage, arid lias crowded no one. Our BiikscrilKTS, though, have generally been prompt in paying up, and the (ila cier takes this opportunity to thank them for their support in the past. Originally the (ilacier was lfl a year, but in lNllfi the price was reduced to II. 50. For this price the publisher has aimed to make the (ilacier a strictly lo cal paper, even to its advertising, and to present the weekly happenings of the community in readable style. Inde- eiident ill politics, the (ilacier is neu tral in all things, believing its function to be that of news medium only. The ideal country newspaper can not he found, mid if there are those who think we should pursue a different policy, let them remember that every one can't be pleased all the time. Thus has the (ilacier grown. In its mission to help build iipthecomnymity, while serving to make our resources known to the outside world, it has built up itself. The (ilacier will keep up with the procession in other words, "It's a cold day when we get left." M'asco Comily Teachers' Institute. The Wasco county teachers' annual institute for 1901 will be held at The Dalles, September 4th, 5th, nth and 7th, under the direction of Superintendent C. L. Gilbert. The district school ollicers' meeting to oe neiu in me court House, Saturday, is anew feature of institute work, hut is one deserving the attention and time of the school directors of Wasco county. This, is in fact something new for the mme, me, oniy similar meeting having been a convention ot directors onlv, at Corvallis last winter. President Campbell was a niemlier of the recent state text hook commission. SuH'rintendent Gilbert addresses the Wasco county school directors as follows: "This meeting has been called in the hope of bringing about a more mutual relation lK'tweeii school ollicers, teachers and patrons. The county .super intendent's annual report for t he year ending March 4, litOl, shows the num ber of children between four and twenty years of age to be 47(51 . There are 272 school ollicers in' the county and the law gives them full con trol of their schools. The welfare of so great a number of children nnd the ju dicious expenditure of so large a sum of money attach to your otliee a responsi bility second to none.
