The day was beautiful. Considering that Memorial day comes when every man, niomau and child in Hood River hat work to do, t he old sold iers were highly grutitiod to see so many of their friends at the cemetery. Canbv post formed at the ball ground and, with the relief corps in carriages, marched to Idlewilde cemetery, where the exer cises were conducted at the grave of their late comrade, D H. Clough. Ser vices were conducted according to the service book. Lincoln's speech at Gettys burg mul general orders Irom headquar ters were read by the adjutant. Rev J. L. Herkimer was called upon and gave an excellent impromptu address. Com mander Cunning gave a short address, fill I of feel ing.af ter which the comrades and re bel corps visited the ten soldiers graves, including one confederate, and decked them with (lowers. The post then as sembled in the shade of an oak tree and sung "America," after which Rev. J. W. Jenkins and Comrades lsenberg and Haves were called upon and delivered short addresses full itriotisin, charily and loyalty. Rev. Jenkins then dis missed the assemblage with a bene diction. Q The baso ball came between The Dalles and Hood River nines, on Sunday, resulted in favor of The Dulles 15 to ti. The llood Hiver club became demoral ized in the lirst inning, in which their opponents scored 8 runs. Dorrance Smith pitched for the first inning and gave such good balls that they were knocked clear out of thetownship. Ber ry pitched the balance of the game, and some good playing was done on botlt sides. Uotli nines played in good humor. A man named Lacy, engineer at But ton & Sohu's logging camp on Wind river, sustained a broken leg on Monday and w as brought to Hood River for treat ment by Ir. Brosius. the accident was caused by the locomotive used in haul ing logs becoming unmanageable on a downgrade. F. 11. Button got a shak ing up also but had no bones broken. A sharper dropped into town last Sat urday und procured a city license to run a fish-pond game, claiming to the re corder that lie would give a prize with every chance taken. His giinie proved to be a dead sure swindle, and the mar shal closed his game after it bad run about an hour. The sharper cleaned up $15 or f-L'O from some of our brightest citizens, who thought they could beat the game. Two arrests were made on the base ball ground Sunday. Two Dalles boys got too much tangle-foot aboard and be came disorderly and resisted the ollicers who placed them under arrest. Mar shal Olinger and his assistant, W. A. ls enberg, marched them to the lock up. Thev were allowed to return home with the rest of the party on the boat. Mr. and Mrs. Ladd, Mr. and Mrs. Ins ey, Miss Holton and Mr. Howard, all of Portland, came up last week and went out to the Parker house. Thursday, the party went to the Devil's Punch Bow l at the falls of Hood river. On their w ay home, Friday, they stopped at E. N. Benson's and got a supply of Hood River strawberries to take with them. II. D. Langille and Bert Stranahan came in from their camp oh the head waters oi uog river on rnuay ana re turned the next day. Mr. Langille re ports the nights have been very cold in the mountains, ice freezing every night. He found considerable snow when at an altitude of 5,000, feet. There the grass and wild flowers were just starting from the ground. Mrs. Chas. B. Prathar has made sale of her si x acres on the East Side to Chas. Ness. Mr. and Mrs. Prathar will move back to their ranch on Rock Creek. Mr. Ness and family came here from Yaki ma to pick berries and like the country so w ell be decided to locate. The price paid for the six acres was foOO. John Dark was badly hurt on Monday while working for Cameron at White Salmon. He was engaged in blasting out a jam in the river, when a blast loosened a rock on the mountain side which rolled down and struck Mr. Dark in the face, lie was badly cut about the forehead and cheek. It was a close call. L. B. Royal came up from Portland last wtek to spend a few days with his friend, T. Meldrum. The latter . i super- lntendim! the work of butting in the electric light plant w hich is so soon to furnish illumination for our city and suburbs. Mr. Royal returned to Port land Monday. Chns. F. Rand, first volunteer of the war, 13th N. Y., cousin to the Rand brothers, Bent, and Mart. Rand, volun teered April loth. Bent and Mart volun teered April 18th, three days later. Bent and Chas. F. were in the first bat tle of the war at Blackburn's Ford, July 18th, 1801. It was a common remark with the many visitors to Idlewilde cemetery on Memorial day that never before had they seen it kept in such good shape. A. O. Hershey, the present sexton, has cer tainly kept things in order and proven himself to bo the right man for this im portant work. Mrs. Geo. P. Crowell has wonderful success in growing roses, and her flower garden is much admired by passers by. She is generous in her bestowal of flow ers, and many a lover of the beautiful has been made glad by a boquet from her hands. The salary of Postmaster Yates of Hood River has been raised from $1,400 a year to 11.500 a year. Mr. 1 ates is an industrious, ellicient and painstaking oilicial.and all his patrons will unite in saving that he deserves the rise in salary. Last Friday Howard lsenberg and a ticket agent for the merry-go-round had a "merry-go-round" of their own. We do not kiiow how many rounds they had hut the agent was obliged to go to i'orfr land Saturday. Howard is able to be about, as usual. . Mrs. S. B. Crockett, after spending 3 weeks in Hood River, visiting friends and relatives, returned to her home Kent, Wash., last Friday, accompanied hv her sister. Mrs. B. On account of the storm and threat ening weather the Street Fair Commis sion decided to postpone the fair one week, and it will bo held Wednesday and Thursday nights of next week.
