A Solder's Letter. MaSila, P. I., April 23, 1900, John F. Henderson, Hood River, Or. My Dear Father Enclosed find one of the latest pictures of Aggie and staff, wuii a tew irienas scattered in group, also a single picture of Aeuinaldo. On April 27th, after I had begun writing this letter, a telegram arrived from Co- loraoa, ordering me to report to Lieut. Fred Boyer as a bodyguard, which I im mediately did, and we took the Filipino steamer for Colomba. I won dered what he wanted a bodyguard for, but did not dare to ask him. At last he relieved my curiosity by telling me that ne nad ten thousand dollars in bis little valise, and, of course, had to have a bodyguard. We went slowly up the river, and I began to look around. Far in the dis tance I could see the green mountains and the smoking volcano to the east, with a wide Btretch of level country to the west, north and south. Winding along up the Pasig river, past women industriously washing clothes at the river's brink, and "hombres" fishing with scoop and cast-nets and line ; past cargoes of hemp, cocoanuts and other products, and here and there a canoe or bouea would pass alongside with a family of Filipinos bound for Manila. We passed by several old forts and cuor tels, which were pretty well filled up with troops, and as we struck the wilder part of the country we could see the American outposts. At last we were in Laguna del Rev, and then began the fun. It was rough on the water, and the Filipinos would holler and grunt, " like a drove of pigs," the lieutenant said. How she pitched, and how the googoos rolled around 1 A heterogeneous mass of hombres, senors, senoritas, chow-chow, chickens, pigs, boxes and bags, tumbled helter-skelter from one side of the boat to the other. How we laughed. The lieutenant and myself knew bow to balance ourselves on rough seas, but those niggers would run from one side to the other and back before they could strike a balance. Howling, cursing and crying, souealine of pigs, squawking of chickens such a rumpus you never heard. There were a few Chinamen aboard, and one of them had hold of a post and about five Filipino girls had hold of his pigtail. How he would chin-chin in his nidsin urofanitv whenever the boat cave an extra lurch. vve reached Lolomba safely, but when we got more we could not get ashore. xne canoes were so numerous that we could not get out of reach and away for halt an hour. At last we got ashore, and the ambulance took us and the money to headquarters, and after awhile I got something to eat. The lieutenant told me to leave next morning at six, so at live I arose, and at six was on my way. i niKed ' two miles down to the landing, and look a canoe with a ser geant and one private, who were going down to Manila with three prisoners sentenced to fifteen years each, at hard labor, in Bilibid; one of them, a major in the bisurrecto artillery, one an infan try captain, and the third a lieutenant, supposed to have been one of the party that boloed Kergt. Votrie. As we reached the river we ran into a mix-up. We were on the government boat, and had three canoes in tow. The two Fili pino boats ran aground, and two gov ernment launches, with two canoes each, were also aground, and as we came down at full speed, with three big can oes, it looked pretty tough. The river at that point was 50 or 75 yards wide. we were in the channel, and would have been all right if the pilot had done as the captain told him. There was about 25 feet space between the two boats, and they had a two-inch line strung across, trying to get each other off. The captain told the pilot to run into that line, and that he would cut it. and went back to get his big butcher knife. When he came back the pilot had turned aside, and ran the boat high and dry aground. We ran a rope to the opposite side of the river and tied to a bunch of bamboo, and everyone got noid and puued. in about an hour we got off, and were once more on our way to Manila, which we reached at 0 o clock, and took pris oners to provost marshal, who ordered mat tney be conveyed to Bilibid. 1 had had no "chow-chow" for. twentv- four hours, so, reported at cuortel and filled up. Your loving son, Edwin A. Henderson, Cuortel del Fortin, Manila P. I. Mount Hood Notes. It seems that if the McKinley prosper ity did not come sooner it must surely be here now, for most of the boys have bought new buggies. Now, maybe we are not in favor of good roads, but we thine yes. The Middle Fork Irrigation company will go up and do their annual assess ment work on Wednesday after election. II. H. Tomlinson is Just finLliing an irrigation aitcn, and A. a. Hillings is just finishing a new barn and R. Lea sure expects to start building a new barn soon. There are about twenty thousand head of sheep between this place and The Dalles, which it is intended to sum mer on Hood river this year. Mr. C. R. Bone is making quite a showing on his irrigation ditch, and will soon be ready for water. You and Mb. Old-Fashloned Diuners the Best Many people who are constantly try ing to concoct new and tempting dishes overstep the mark. People who eat large quantities of the various preserved foods are not always the strongest. The old-fashioned meal of roasted or boiled beef served up with its own juices, with two plain vegetables and a pudding, was far more wholesome than the eight course dinner which is served nowadays. Few people know the true flavor of po tatoes or rice. In this country season ing too often means salt and pepper only. People in the eastern countries, especially the Turks, make most de lightful stews and soups by using a com bination of vegetables, cooking them slowly enough to draw out the flavor. Extracts and sauces prepared chemical ly, and mustard and horseradish, may be taken now and then, perhaps to ad vantage ; but, as a rule, things of this kind should be avoided or used sparing ly.
