They were intended to arrive here by Christmas, but were a little late. Missouri is the country where they can raise corn and pork. At the last meeting of the W. C. T. U the following resolution was passed unanimously. Resolved, That a vote of thanks is hereby tendered to those who assisted the members of the W. C. T. U. in circulating the remonstrance against the saloon and presenting the same to the city council. John Rayburn, from Troutdale, has rented Mrs. C. L. Henderson's farm and will run a dairy and furnish milk to patrons in town. He brought six cow with him from Troutdale and will pur chase several more. See his announce. ineut in another column. Mr. Rayburn went to Troutdale last i ndav and will return with his family the last of the week. County Commissioner N. C. Evans ordered a Western Reversible road miv chine, which arrived last week and he wag engaged for the best part ot tw davs in setting up the machine in the building formerly occupied by the Mt. Hood stage Jo. Une of these macnine was brought here about three years ago by Capt. Blowers while he was commis sioner, but the machine was taken ihe upper part of the county where it lias been in use ever since, lhis ma f hine will be kept here for the use ny road district in the valley. K Hood River, to be in the fashion, has had a case of small-pox. But thanks to the prompt action of the committee on health and police, ossMcd by the mayor and other members of the council, iLnd the physicians, the case was at once quarantined and moved to the town hos pital a mile from town. Mrs. II. G. Wyatt came home from Salem recently, where she had been to attend the funer al of her mother, who, it is said, died of small-pox. Soon after her return she was taken sick, and the doctor, fearing that her sickness might be small-pox, reported the case to the mayor. The family was at once quarantined, and the case proving to be small-pox, the patient and all the family, seven in all, were re moved to the hospital, where they are well provided for ami guarded. Dr. law, who hart chanjc of the case, says no one outside of the family was exposed to the disease. The house from which hev were removed has been thoroughly disinfected. So there is no small-pox in town and no chance to catch it unless it is brought in from other placeB. Waueoma lodge, K. of P., joined the excursion to Cascade Locks last Sstur- av, where they met with the lodge at hat place. Friendship lodge, No. 9, of The Dalles had chartered the Regulator or the occasion. There was about 40 members of The Dulles lodge. The party was met at the Locks by the boys f rliythagorus lodge ana escoriea to he Castle hall. Two candidates were initiated in the second rank. At 11 clock supper was announced at the hotel, where the guests found a fine pread. A royal good time was had. Several visitors from Portland were present, nlso Bro. Yoran from Eugene. E. hurch. 1 his story, as told by a private soldier who participated in that blood ieet of battles; graphically describing camp lift, a soldier's sensation under tire, desperate charges and the closing con II ict on the Jjuodgrass Hill, where Thomas earned his title "Rock of Chick- mauga," never fails to entertain and nstruct those who hear it. the lecture will be given for the benefit of Canby post. A good musical programmo will be furnished by the Hood River band. Admission 25c; children 15c. Harvey Bvrkett of Trout Lake was in Hood Kiver last ihursday. He reports a mild winter in that section and every body prosperous. He brought to the Columbia river and shipped to Trout dale seven head of fat cattle, which averaged 1,1505 pounds each. Three 3- year-olds weighed 3,8t0;- four 2-year- olds weighed 4,195; total 8,055 pounds. Also three cows that weighed d,do pounds. A. I. Mason came up from Portland Saturday and returned Monday evening. He is enthusiastic over the fruit pros pects of Hood Kiver. He says air Paasch, who is in charge of his orchard on the East Side, claims that hiVthreo- vear-old Suitzenbergs will produce 2t bushels of apples this year. His spitzen bergs seem to bo ahead of his Ben Davis u coming into bearing. A. C. Staten arrived here during the week from Salt Lake with a carload of goods and has moved to his ranch which ie purchased of J. J. Luckev. His fam ily will arrive later. R. P. Grass is not auite knee high vet, and most of the animals would rather eat clover hay out of a manger Council Proceedings. At the adjourned council meeting Monday evening, there were present F. C. ISrosius, mayor ; Aldermen IJlowers Dukes, Davidson, Luckey and McDon aid; Recorder Nickelsen and Marshal Olinger. Minutes of previous meetings were read and approved. Committee on health ana police ro ported that thev had completed the pur chase of the Buskirk property; also that they had caused a telephone to be put in the hospital, the telephone company furnished the phoue gratis, only asking that the town pay an expenses oi put tint: in the same. Recorder reported he had drawn war rants in favor of Win. Buskirk for $600 and fl8. McDonald was elected director for three years,-and L, Henry clerk for one year. There was no opposition to Mr. Mciwnaut ; J uuge Henry was opposed by probably half a dozen nominations. The question of selling part or all of the old school house block was brought up, and on motion of E. L. Smith, the board of directors were instructed not to sell any part of the school house block inside of one year. Judge Henry and E. L. Smith argued that this prop erty should not be sold till the bond3 fall due, and by that time the real estate would certainly be worth more man it is today. John L. Henderson reported tnat tne school house fence was found to be four feet over on the lot he had leased from A. A. Schenck. He asked for a survey and said he was willing to pay his part of it. On motion the matter was left with the board of directors.
