The Ben Iavis apple is Condemned
by some people, who claim It Is worth-
less a an eating apple, being leathery
i nl tasteless. The fact is tills apple,
like a go3 many other Varieties, Is not
Kood till7 it' Is ripe. It is one of our
longest, keepers'-end never gets, ripe
enough or-eating till the spring of, the
year. 'The lien Davis is how ripe, and
whenltept in a suitable place, will be
poocj till the middle of the Bummer. It
Is as good an eating apple as can be
found in the markets at this time of
year. , As a cooking apple it Is t he best.
It will ctanlr:'triore freezing weather
than any other apple, f It is the hand
somest apple, iu the market today. The
tree is hardy mid bears every year. No
mutter' how much the' tree may be al
lowed to overbear in one season, it
Comes out smiling with blooms the
next, 'while some other varieties take' a
year 6r two to recuperate.- .It is .adapt
ed to most soils and will do well along
side the Newtown pippin and Spltzen
burg, ', or will ' flourish In any apple
country where these two favorites fail.
- More Ben. Davis apples of ; a good mar
ketable. size can be grown than any
other i variety.. In .Hood Blver, two
acres planted to Ben Davis apple trees,
if properly cured for, after seven years
will be good for a' thousand bpxes of
apples a year. ' The Ben ' Davis has
been the favorite apple with orchafd
Ists for three-quarters of a century, and
it will continue to be the favorite till
something better takes its place. , ..
The. Hillsboro Argus has opened a
campaign In favor of the states of .Ore
gon and Washington pensioning the
Indian, war veterans.) This is a good
move; Congress will never come to the
relief of these worthy veteraus. ' The
little that would be added to our state
taxes I by pensioning' the 'metr' who
fought our Indian wars fifty years ago
would, not be felt , by the average tax
payer and would .be an act of justice
long overdue.- f. W :;'! , '!-
