W. grand recorder, came up from ' Portland last Thursday to attend the anniversary exercises of Riverside lodge. - Mr. Chas. Bradley returned from Sherman county last week, where he had been engaged in blasting wells. He brought home a case ef rheumatism. Mrs. Amelia Green of Mt. Moriah, Mo., came last Thursday to visit her mother, Grandma Blount. Mrs.blount has been quite sick but is now improv ing. , . " the Hood River Fruit Growers' Union will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow in A. O. U. W. hall. A big crowds is ex pected to be In attendance. Miss Madge Warren came home from Sherman county last week. She has been teaching school at Moiikland. but her health failed and she was obliged to give up her school. She now has what Is termed low typhoid and Is un der the doctor's care. The Glacier was in error last week in stating that Mrs. A. R. Byrkett would aocmpany her husband toOhio. Mr. Byrkett goes back this time to wind up his business affairs at Troy and will return to make his permanent home on his ranch at White Salmon. Some Spuds. John Kelley reports that he dug from one hill 37 potatoes that weighed in the aggregate 15 pounds, besides little ones not market able. Mr. Kelley's next neighbor, Van Johnson, presented the Glacier with 18 potatoes of the Bufnalo White va riety which tipped the scales at 38 pounds, an average of nearly 3 pounds each. Owing to the flag raising and ded icatory services at Barrett "school house last Saturday, Canb po-t and W.R.C. failed to hold meetings on that day. Special meetings of the post and corps are therefore called for tomorrow, at 2 "o'clck. At this meeting Comrade G. R. Castner will inspect the post and nominations for officers will be in or der. A full attendance is desired. The Hood River band was hand somely entertained at White Salmon, Monday evening, where they were called to furnish music for the grand republican rally, when M. P. Isenberg Is said to have made the beat speech of the campaign. The Dana boys were met at the feiryaud taken up to the town in hacks. They played a tune on the balcony of the Morse hall and then were taken to an excellent supper at the uiirr house. The speaking was in the Morse hall, where the band played patriotic airs. The boys say their re ception by the good people of White Salmon was In striking contrast with the way they have sometimes beeu treated at home when called upon to donate their services. Capt H.C.Cook, the committee chairman, paid the band $10 for their services. Mr. Raloh Van Cleve of Toledo, Ore gon, son of the proprietor of the Ya- uuina rose or that city, who has iieen at W. P. Watson 's for the past six weeks, started for his home on the 8th. He expects to go to work in the newly discovered gold mine, 15 miles from Toledo, which was discovered by Harry Miller, the discoverer of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mine. The quartz assays $1,800 to the ton. A 10-stamp mill la now being erected in Toledo. Mr. Miller was offered $30,000 for the mine, but he says $75,000 can't buy it. Mr. R. C. Judson, industrial agent of the O. R. & N. Co., accompanied by Wm. W. Phillips a capitalist of Cali fornia, and Mr. Aurendall, an apple buyer of St. Paul, paid a visit to Hood River last Saturday and were taken over the valley by Hon. E. L. Smith. Mr. Phillips has a large fruit ranch in Fresno county, Cat., from which he ships grapes by the train load. He is ui'ich interested In Hood River and said he might soon come here to invest some money and help develop our re sources. Prof. P. G. Daut, the Eye Specialist will be at Hood River next Tuesday November 15th, also at Mosier Monday November 14th. The profrssor, who win visit tnese places, is permanently located at ihe Dalles and comes very highly recommended. Anyone troubled with their eyes should call on him. There Is a good attendance at the re vivul meetings being conducted in the Valley Christian church. Elder Jen kins Is using charts to illustrate his subjects in the Old Testament and will use a stereopncon to illustrate JNew Testament themes. The services begin at 7:30, and 15 minutes is taken up in a song and praise service. The meetings are ingtiueiive to an woo atieua. Mrs. R. R. A Hard commenced a six months' term of school in the Barrett district Monday last. She is teaching tne primary department. Miss Acker- erman, who had been employed to teach this school, afterwards got a po sition as teacuer at L.a uratide. Dr. R. W. Benjamin is a dentist that can be relied upoti to come when he advertises to come. He was in Hood River last Saturday and will be here again today and tomorrow. His office is at the Mt. Hood hotel. Mrs. Gaston died on Sunday and her funeral was held on Wednes day. ' , The usual Sabbath services will be held at the Congregational church next Sunday. Mr. Hershuer's subject at the morning service will be "The True Evangelism." Miss Pauline Kline of Cnrvallls, pres ident of the Daughters of Rebekah, ju risdiction of Oregon, paid an official visit to the Hood River lodge on Mon day night. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Campbell and daughter left on Wednesday for their former home near Pittsburg, t'enu Mr. Campbell's health is improving. James Hurtman; a veteron of the civil war, died suddenly near The Dalles, November 7th, of heart failure. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Lyons spent several days In The Dalles last week, the guests or Mr. and Mrs. u. J. lariey. Little Anna Cordes is very sick at her home at Frank ton. She contract ed a cold, which settled on her lungs. Mr. (;has. Hayner and family ar rived from Monkland last Friday and are domiciled In the Hanna bouse. Dr. Beuiamin, dentist, will be at the Mt. Hood hotel today and tomorrow. November 11th and 12th. Col. Hartley gave a free exhibition of his skill in sticking a hog in the public streets last Monday. The next teachers' institute will be held at Frail kton school bouse, on November 19th. Mrs. C. H. Parmenter of Salem was guest of Mrs. M. A. Cook Saturday and Sunday. Dethman's ' road notice in another column may interest you. Mr. O. Sandman, living near' Mt. Hood, is quite low with cancer of the stomach. Death fit Mrs. A. P. Bateham. An item reached us just after going to press last week, telling, what few in Hood River wte aware of, that Mrs. A. P. Bateham was in a hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, where she underwent a severe surgical operation on the 20th of last mouth. Her case progressed finely for two weeks, and we were an ticipating the pleasure of telling her friends here that her early recovery and return was assured.. But we are forced to tell very different news now. Last Saturday she suffered a relapse, and in spite of all that the best physicians in Cleveland could do, she died Sunday night. Relatives from there accompa nied the remains to St. Paul, for which place her husband started on Monday. Mrs. Batehatu's home had always been in St. Paul until she came to Hood River four years ago. She was a social favorite everywhere, and her many friends will miss her Indeed and deeply sympathize with the husband and daughter whom she left. Educate Tour llowels With Cascaret.
