New York, May 25. A Herald spe cittl from Washington says: Spain's flying squadron will fly no longer. Its race Is run. Cooped up in the harbor of Santiago de Cuba, Us de Btiuction or capture is considered by officials here (o be merely a matter of time. Before the harbor are the armor cluds of the American navy ready to give battle to' Admiral Cervera's ships the moment they poke their noses out of the channel. The advices announc ing these to be the positions of the war ships were received at Washington last night. Port au Prince, May 25. The report of the arrival of the Spanish Cape Verde fleet at Sansiago is correct. A correspondent here of the Associated Press has been able to obtain definite confirmation of this news, but up to the present it has been impossible to obtain details. Dispatches sent from here to Santiago asking for information on the subject remain unanswered. Washington, May 25. At 0:45 Sec retary Long said no word had been re' ceived regarding the bottling up of the Spanish fleet at Santiago. He says, however, that he fully credits the press dispatches, and has reason to believe that Admiral Cervera is cooped up In Santiago with Schley on the outside. It is understood the last cable con nection between Cuba and Madrid will be cut today. The president .today issued a proc lamation calling for 75,000 more volun teers. This will make the total army strength, regular , and volunteer, 280,' 000. The additional recruits will not be recruited from the national guard, but the enlistments will be open. The call, it is supposed here, indi cates a determination to press the cam paign actively and vigorously. One hundred and twelve thousand men have now been mustered into the volunteer army, and official reports show that the greater number of these are ready to move to the front. The battle-ship Oregon arrived safely at Jupiter, Fla., last night and sailed again today. A copy of the women's edition of the Tlmes-JMountaineer, published tor the benefit of The Dalles public library, li us been received. It is a very cred itable publication. We find among the contributors Hood River ladies as follows: Mrs. J. H. Cradlebaugh, Mary , K. Krazier, Marlon Cook, Henrietta K. Eliot. The paper is sold for 10 cents a copy. - Spain is a country of arid territory and torrential streams, the result of ig norance or Indifference in not caring for the natural forests that once cov ered the mountains. Win. C. Whitney, secretary of the navy during Cleveland's first admin istration, Is the one man to whom the nation is indebted for our superiority over the Spanish in war ships. He laid t ho foundation and started the construction of our present navy. Bring Flowers. The Sabbath school of the Congrega tional church is requested to meet Sun day, at 0:45 a. m., sharp. We desire that every member of the school shall be present, us we are expected to take part in the memorial services. We liope every one will bring a nice bo- quet or flowers, as they are to be used in the exercises of the occasion. You are expected to take part in the flag exercises under the direction of Prof. -Allard, and we hope all the school will be present to assist in perpetuating the memory of our heroic dead. C. J. Haves. Superintendent. McMinnville, Or., May 21, 1898. Editor Glacier: The eagerly-looked-for Glacier is just at hand. I note that our genial clerk of the county has called on the voters of Hood River. I wish some of the reformers of Hood River would call his attention to the fact that we pay but 25 cents a transfer for abstracts here In Yamhill county as against 75 cents in Wasco. How is thai? I am now able to ride out every day and walk about some. Hope to be able to go to Hood River before the berry season is over. The county clerk is a salaried officer and has nothing to do with fixing the fees. But they should be no higher in Wasco county than they are in Yam hill. Ed. . Fourth of July. Hood River, May 25, 1898. We, the Oregon Emergency Corps of Hood River, ask as a favor that the patriotic : men of Hood River town and valley arrange for a Fourth of July celebra tion. Wasco should give the county a bis Fourth of July celebration this year. Our citizens never do things by halves; therefore, let us celebrate on a grand scale at home, or go as a county on an excursion to Hood River. How would tbiB dor "Go as you please" to Hood River on Saturday, hear some big gun preach Sunday, attend a grand lecture (Sunday even ing, an exceptional programme for Monday, the 4th, and return Tuesday? Fares are chean. and every one would enjoy the trip. Now that we have a railroad, let's start the custom oisnaKing tne oust out oi our Bnens once a year, w uat aoes noon raver sayr The Glacier can safely speak for Hood Klver and say, i;ome; we win give you a royal welcome. The pro gramme outlined dv ine rtepuuiiu is a good one; now let our citizens get to gether and extend an invitation to tne goon people or ssnermun county to come und enioy our. hospitality and celebrate with us the coming Fourth; and alone about bentember 1st, wnen our neighbors have gathered their golden harvest ot grain, we can return the compliment by giving an excursion to Sherman county. J, W. Morton. It gives us pleasure to reproduce the following kind remarks about our neighbor by the TlllamooK Heamigni Mr. Morton is a voune man of ability and nnquestionable integrity. He has always been loyal to the republican party and a tirm and unyielding champion of sound finances; outspoken in his opposition to the fallacies of tne populist ana democratic parties upon tne financial question. Imrlng Mr. Morton's res idence of several years in this county he gained many warm friends by his honesty In personal matters and his fealty and allegiance to tne repumican party, ana naa ne remain here would have been honored by his party before now. Mr. Morton's Tillamook friends are proud of his advancement and preference at tne nanus ot the republicans oi snerman and Wasco, and the republicans of those counties can do onlv one tliinar better In this matter, and that is, by electing Mr. Morton as tneir joint representative. A Fine Testimony. A Wasco county farmer gave the ed itorof the Crook County Journal the following reasons why he Is supporting Malcolm A. Moody lor congress: I remember the year of the crop failure, ten years or so airo. Hundreds of farmers would have starved the next yrar had it not been for the Moodys; for the wheat was killed in the "Doot" ana we naan't enougn even or tne bleached straw, without a particle of grain in It. to keep our stock from perishing and not an ounce of seed for the coming year. What did the Moodys do? Klickitat Agriculturist. Arthur Harrison of Pine Forest was leading a vicious horse into the stable.a few days ago, when it pulled back and the halter rope be coming tangiea arouna Air. Harrison s wrist, his hand was torn almost off, making a very dangerous wound. The next day his driver was thrown off the wagon and the four-horse team ran three miles through the woods be fore they were stopped. Soon after another driver let another four-horse team with two wagons run away with a load of lumber down the Columbus grade and scattered lumber Its whole length. When the team was stopped the driver wanted to throw up his job, out Harrison said he bad better stay with it till he had gathered the wreck together. Coming back home they put a load of hay on tlv trail wagon. Mr. Harrison, while walking beside the load with his wounded wrist in a sling. saw that the hay was about to tip over and sprang to the upper side to keep it up. He swung to the side of the rack, but his foot slipped a little too far and the wagon ran over it, crusning it Daaiy. jmow Mr. Harrison is buying new wagons and hiring a new driver.
