Part of his work was done for Mr. Armor and Mr. Savage. ' ' Mr. George Goss of Gem, Idaho, was here last week looking for a location. If he locates " here, others in his neigh borhood, with families, willcome. A chimney in : Mr. Geo. Crowell's store building burned out last Saturday evening, during the gale, and for a time caused considerable excitement. . Some person has been stealing the telephone wire in the neighborhood of Straight's Hill. Two weeks ago they cut off 50 feet and last week about 150 feet was missing. F. H. Watts, general agent for the Monumental Bronze Co., Dufur, Or., will make periodical visits to Hood River. See his work in the cemeteries and then see him for terms. ; - ' v Spring equinox occurred last Mon day) at 12:15 p. m. In the morning it was winter, with frost and snow blow ing. In the afternoon it was spring, bright and warm. Mr. W.J. Smith attended the hog convention at Walla Walla last week. He came home with his left eye in a sling, it having been very painful from the effects of a cinder. ' J; Mr- Ed Miller now has charge of the Oregon Lumber Co's office at Viento. Mrs. Miller and three children were visiting her parents at Hood River and went to Viento last week. T: Neff went to The Dalles, Monday, where he will take the place of Prof. Gavin in the high school for a few days, while the latter goes as a del egate to the democratic state con veu ,tion. . . ' 1 have been afflicted with rheuma . tism for fourteen years and nothing seemed to give any relief. I was able to be around all the time, but con stantly suffering. Mr. Bell was so pleased with the idea that he at once agreed to duplicate the amount at his own expense. : Hood River was visited on March 17th with the heaviest wind storm that has prevailed in this section for 18 years. Fences were blown do ami, trees uprooted aud many sections of irrigat ing flume overturned in different parts or the valley. The most serious dam age we learned of was the blowing down of the tall smoke-stacK at the box factory. : j County School Superintendent' Gil bert has mailed to teachers instruct ions pertaining to Arbor day, which comes on the second Friday in April. It is suggested that where nature has al ready endowed the grounds with trees, the people should, meet and fence and otherwise improve their school prop erty. ' .. .
