A letter received by Geo. T. Prat her from D. F. Pierce brings the sad Intel ligence of the death of Mrs. Pierce at Sun Jose, Col., January 10,1898. Her health begun to fail about September 1st and from that time declined rap idly. Mi's. Pierce was an estimable woman and made many friends while a resident of Hood River who will reud this brief announcement of her death with deep regret A young man named McBee was ar raigned in Justice Prather's court, Wednesdaycharged with stealing two bundles of' handkerchiefs from Wood worth & Hanna's store. Evidence against him was considered sufficient to hold him to appear before the grand jury, with bonds fixed at $150. Hon. John Micuell of The Dalles acted as prosecuting attorney and. Judge Kent appeared for defendant. . The Hood River Water Supply Co. will flume, that part of their - ditch through the shell rock near Dead Point. This will give the company about 50 or 60 inches "more of water that now escapes through ; the-shell rock. Lumber has been delivered to within a mile and a half of the head of the ditch for building this flume. The members of the congregational church gave their annual dinner at the pastor's residence on lust Thursday. A lurge attendance enjoyed the bountiful repast and the pastor and his family were made glad by their larder left groaning under the weight of the sub stantial things of life. J. H. Shoemaker made final proof on his homestead at The Dalles land office Tuesday. George T. Prather was called to go up in the evening as witness, in place of one of Mr. Shoemaker's Dalles witnesses, wuo went on ana got mar ried just at the time he was wanted at the land oinee. A party of the friends of ' Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Miller as-sembled at the res idence of the bride's parents and gave them a charivari on Monday evening. The party was invited inside and a good social time was had the, bulance of the evening. .: . A meeting of the new town council was held Tuesday evening. Last Friday evening, January 9th, a party was given at the residence, of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Boorman in honor of the fifteenth anniversary of the birthday of tbeir son George. The object of the club is literary work, and the committee desire tha't this object be made prominent, and that all social functions be, so far as possible, dispensed with. To this end we urge that there be no lunches pro vided at the monthly meetings. We also request that no one outside of the club be invited to these meetings, but would cordially invite all interested in our work, and who desire to devote one evening a month to literary discussion, to enroll their names as members of the club. We further ask that all members prepare themselves as well as possible for the discussion of each sub ject. Especially would we call atten tion to the subjects for April and May.
