A Hood River merchant was at De Moss Springs inquiring the price of business lots, which caused a boom at that place. Frank Caddy and J. W. Forbes re tarmed Sunday from a trip to Sherman county, where they took a baud of Hood River horses to be wintered. After looking over the country for the best place to winter horses they de cided there was none better than O. H. Williams ranch at Moro, where they found the best of pasturage and run ning water. They will start again with another band today. These cars differ from the ordinary tourist sleepers, being built on the same filan as regular sleepers but-upholstered n leather instead of plush. This new line of cars connects at Spokane with ximilur cars running to and from St. Paul without change. The industrial wave struck Uncle Oliver liartiness last week and he went to work and scraped and cleaned Oak street of leaves and mud between Third and Fourth, doing a thorough job. Su pervisor Watson employed Mr. O. G. Chamberlain with his team and hauled the piles of muck away on Wedesday Col. Hartley got a job to work out his road tax, and while ne was engaged helping to haul away the muck he made the passers-by believe he was working through purely patriotic mo tives and love for the dear people, and while some volunteered to relieve him at the shoveling for a spell, others of the unsuspecting were worked for the cigars. A young man named Heyting, son of Rudolph Heyting of Gilmer, Wash., arrived at Hood River on Monday evening's train on his way home from Portland. He went from the station to the White Salmon ferry landing, where he left his valise and went out on the point of rocks to halloa for the terryman. Jt was then getting dark. Returning to the boat landing, after u absence ot only a lew minutes, he found his valise and overcoat and a new pair-of gum boots' missing. His valise contained clothing and other things valued at about $30. Tuesday morning, as soon as it was daylight, Heyting went back to the river and made another search for his lost prop erty. He went to the Indian shacks out on the point, where he found Geo. Alleck, who denied all knowledge ot the valise. Heyting came up to town nd reported to Constable Olinger. Mr. Olinger drove over to the landing soon after and met Geore Alleck and ndian Tom coming towards town. Alleck was carrying a valise and over coat and gumboots, which he said he had tound aud was on his way to town to claim the reward of $5 Heyting had offered for the recovery of his property. Mr. Olinger placed both men under ar rest and brought them to town. War rants were served charging them with theft of the articles found in their pos session, hut at, their examination be fore Justice Prather no positive evi dence that they were guilty wns shown and both were discharged.
