tion in San Francisco, July 7th to 12th,
the O. R. and N. Co. have made the
round-trip rate on steamer from Port
land $10( meals and berth in cabin in
cluded), and one fare for round trip to
Portland. ,
Children's day will be observed at
the Congregational church next Sun
day, at 11 a. m. Happy children, good
recitations and class exercises, beauti
ful flowers and lively Binging by the
children will make this an interesting
occasion. The ordinance of infant
baptism will be administered, and
there will be a short address by the
pastor. Everybody invited.
The members of the Congregational
church have very kindly granted their
pastor a vacation during the month of
July. Mr. and Mrs. Hersbner will at
tend the national Christian Endeavor
convention in San Francisco from July
7th to 18th. It is estimated that 15,000
Christian Endeavorers will be in at
tendance. Mr. Hersbner's family left
yesterday for Monmouth, where Mrs.
Hershuer's parents reside. During va
cation the trustees contemplate mak
ing some improvements in the inteiior
of the church. 1 r

ence listened to Dr. T. L. Eliot's able
and entertaining lecture on Tuesday
evening on "Greece and Turkey,
The Doctor thinks the Ottoman Em
pire is far from being the "sick man
it has been thought to be, and that
nothing short of an European fratri
cidal war will ever dismember Turkey,
in which event Kussia would sweep
down and capture Constantinople.
The ladies' aid society of the Congre
gational church is under many obliga
tions to Dr. Eliot for his instructive
lecture.

from the encampment at Vancouver,
last Saturday, to visit his cousin, M
P. Isenberg, and family. Mr. 8. .V,
Isenberg resides at Tacoma, where he
Is commander of a post of the Orand

Mr. Bishop has completed his con
tract on the flume. There is some work
yet to be none on the ditch by the Val
ley Christian church. It is expected
the whole work will be accepted and
tne water turned m by Monday or
Tuesday next.
An alarm of fire yesterday at 1 o'clock
brought out the volunteer fire brigade
in quick time. A defective flue in the
residence of Postmaster Yates threat
ened a conflagration. A hole was out
in the roof and the fire was soon ex
tinguished by willing hands. .
On July 8d, 4th and 5th, the O. R. &
JN. Co. will sell excursion tickets to
any station in Oregon and return, in
eluding Wallula and Walla Walla, at
rate or one tare tor the round trip.

There Were shipped by the O. R. &
N. Co. from Hood River during' the
past shipping season 18,300 crates of
strawberries au increase over last
year of 8,300 crates. One-third of the
shipments were made to Montana
markets.
Judge Mays and County Clerk Kel
say came down from The Dalles Mon
day, and ' in company with Captain
Blowers inspected the new steel bridge
across Hood river at this place, and the
wors nas oeen accepted. .
The delegates from Hood River to
the state encampment of the G. A. R.
and W. R. C. at Independence return
ed home Saturday and report having
had. a very enjoyable time. The Dalles
was selected as the place for holding
the encampment next year.
The post office was moved Thursday
to the Middleton building, formerly
occupied by Mrs. Thompson's iriilli
nery store. New mail boxes have been
put in, and everything about the new
office has 'a neat and tidy appearance.
Mr. Joseph Frazier plowed up his old
strawberry patch Wednesday. He
found the ground in fine condition for
plowing after the snaking rain of Mon
dny night. He will replant to straw
berries next fall.
Harry Btryker of The Dalles subbed
for H. A. York in his drug store last
Friday and Saturday, while the latter
was absent in Portland attending the
meeting of the Oregon state board of
pharmacy. .. .
Miss Eliza Stevens, teacher of pri
mary department in Hood River pub
lic school, went to Portland Thursday
on The Dalles City. She will spend
several months with her parents in
Clackamas county. ,

shaft to his reaper, Thursday, and had

. Mr. E. Locke is making some sub
stantial improvements in the shape of
a new barn. The barn will be 30 by

druggist, having received his diploma,
signed, sealed and delivered, from the
state board of pharmacy.
