VVinans, road supervisor of tlie district at the forks of Hood, river, last week ordered out all the men at work on the Improvement Co 'a diteli in his district to work on the roads. The m;n refused to go to work, and it was reported that Mr. Winaiis intend ed' having theiu arrested Inst Monday, but we have heard nothing further in regard to their arrest. The men all be long in the lower part of the valley, and must of them1 have property on which they pay road tax. It seems it is the law that a supervisor can order a man out to work the roads in t,he dis trict in which he is found unless he can show a receipt for his poll lax. but in this case the men hail most of them been ordered out in their home dis tricts, and hud been at home on rainy days anil Sundays, and we do not be lieve they could have been convicted. The supervisors of the road districts in which the men reside were consider ably worked up. over the matter, be lieving that Mr. VVinans had attempt ed to lake undue advantage. Mr. E. D. Calkins has purchased the Stokes ranch, H miles west of Center ville, Wash., one of the best stock and grain ranches in Klickilat county. He will engage in raising stock, grain and fruit. He writes to the Glacier that he, will be glad to see any of his Hood River frienns at 'any lime. In four days, he says, he changed from u Hoid River berryman to a Klickitat farmer, and is now putting in his crops. He bus a number of well-broken horses for him when he entires down. Loiigcore and wife of Jack son, Mich., arrived here Sunday. Mrs. Longcoie is a sister to Mr. G. R. Cast tier, and they will remain here at least a year lor the benefit ot her health. Mr Lontrcore is an architect and llousebuilder and has been engaged in his profession in Jackson for the past 12 yearn. ' The churches of Hood River were well filled last Sunday by persons of all ages to witness the Easter exercises At the Congregational there were two admissions to the church and 8 child dren were baptized. The church, was handsomely decorated, and the ladies deserve great credit for the work and the excellent programme provided. The new time table of the O. R.tsN. will be found in the advertising., col umns. The new passenger schedule gives us the mail from Portland six hours later, otherwise the arrangement will be full v as convenient as the old. Our strawberry shipments can be made by hot h east bound trains. The directors of the Hood River Fruit Growers' Union have selected Mr. G. R. Casiner to go East and Mr. T. R. Among the latter was the "September Gale" by Mr. Porter, which, with his genius for imitation and gesture, was greatly appreciated . Something out of the usual line were the caricature drawings in charcoal by Mr. G. C. Bushuell. The progress of the drawing was watched with great interest, which culminated in loud ap plause as the drawing reached comple tion.
