The agricultural experiment station at Corvallis fed two calves in succes sion on wild parsnip, and in both cases the calves died within three hours' after eating the parsnip. In the second case the supposed antidote was given to the calf as soon as it, began to show "the effects of the poison, but without effect. In each case a bulb about the size of art, apple whs fed. The tests make it certain that the wild parsnip is a deadly poison, aud justify the reports of farmers that they have lost stock which had fed upon wild parsnips. Rural Northwest. i About the funniest book we ever read is "Si Klegg." It is a history of the war as the private soldier saw it, and gives the experience of an Indiana youth whose patriot ism induced him to. enlist to help put down the rebellion. We read the book as far as the account of Si's first day's march, when we bad to lay it aside on account of its being so funny. One chapter at a time is about all an old soldier can read with out injuring himself from laughing. We don't know how it would strike a person who had never goue through the same experience, but to an old soldier it brings back memories of the days of 61 to 65, and he can go through it all again and enjoy it much better at this distance, t A. J. Cunning is agent for this book. ,', ; ; , Our former fellow-townsman, Mr. J. H. Cradlebaugh, will deliver his highly interesting lecture, entitled, "The Hatching of the Sage Hen," or "The Early History of Nevada," in this city at the Congregational church on Satur day evening, March 27th at 7:45 o'clock. At The Dalles, where Mr. Cradlebaugh delivered this lecture, it was spoken of by the press in the highest terms, and a larger number attended it than any previous lecture of the jourse. A treat is in store for Hood River people. Ad mission, popular prices, 25 and 15 cis. Proceeds to be added to pew fund. J. M. Hixon and Co. of Seattle wrote to H. C. Bateham: "How L the strawberry crop? 'Remember, the buyers look; to us for Hood River strawlierries, the same as they do for rancy apples, alio we would like to have the first that get ripe. . We have just sold a lot of apples from We- naicnee tor s.&ti periiox:anr expect some Spitzenbergs and Newtown pip pins rrom mere, ior wmcn i will get $3 a box." Mr. C. M. Wolfard lost two valuable cows that died early this morning. The cows were noticed to lie sick yesterday and seemed very thirsty, and this morning, shortly after being turned out of the barn, both died Mr. Wolf ard thinks they may have been poison ed and will cut them open and inves tigate. . A fan drill will prove an interesting attraction in the entertainment to be given at the "I). B. church ' early in April. The ladies', aid society of this church have decided, to hold' a bazaar in the interests of their society some time during the year, and are already beginning to plan for its success. Don't -bring us any more Kansas K racked Korn. Our hopper won't feed it, the millstones run empt, and are damaged thereby. It's dirty, anyway and can't be sieved. Good whole corn can be bought at the stores. It makes excellent meal. Bring some of that. Harbison Bros. The most enterprising a-id successful fruit growers were in attendance at ihe institute Tuesday and Wednesday, while the other class of. fruit growers were "too bus.y" to attend. Yet the latler class are the . ones who would have received the most good. To which Mass do you belong? Those who have teen waiting for rose bushes can now Ik? supplieiVat the Columbia Nursery. Mr. Bateham re ceived a large supply of two year old bushes last Tuesday of as fine an assort ment as was ever brought into the valley. . Invitations to attend a soiree mas querade, at Middleton hall, Wednesday evening, March 31st. have been sent out by Mrs. A. P. Bateham. 'Owing to the very limited capacity of the hall, admission will be restricted to those having invitations. ' The young people of the Congrega tional church . will give a crazy tea sociable, the most unique of the season, at A. O. U. W. hall on Thursday eve ning April 1st "All Fools' day." Mr. Jas. Graham, wife and daughter, moved down from Mt. Hood yesterday and have rented the Coe residence. Mr. Graham will soon begin building on his lots in South Waucoma. ' Pres. Miller advocated heading fruit trees in this locality at not over two feet. Tills may seem low to some of our fruit growers, but be gave good reasons for this advice. 1 - Miss Theresa Morse, Hood River's elticieut P. M. and her assistant, Miss Grace Belditig, have each purchased of Brosius & Williams a Crawford bicycle. ' ' . ' A gentleman in Portland wishes to purchase a small fruit ranch in Hood River and has subscribed tor the Gla cier to keep posted on those advertised for sale. . Mrs. Morse, mother of L. E. and C. L. Morse, was taken dangerously sick last Suuday and was quite low for several days, but is now much better. Spring has come, the bulk of the grain is ground, hence, Saturday only will be our grinding days until after new crop. Harbison Bros. Hunt for a nice lot of horse radish. An umbrella left in the Methodist church, in town, can be had by the owner calling for it at thi,s office. fLIcense to wed was issued by the county clerk, last week, to Frank Hill aud Miss Elta C. Parrisu. Lou.Morse, the White Salmon mer chant, was in town Monday. School commenced in the Crapper district, last week, with 36 pupils. To Cure a Cold in One Day; Take Laxative Bromo Quinine Tab lets. Williams & Brosius refund the money if it fails to cure. 25c. - Thoughtless Boys. Tuesday evening, while Prof.Oordle'y was lecturing on fruit pests at the in stitute, some bad boys climbed to the ! roof of the box factory next door, where ' the engine had been fired up in an un successful attempt to furnish electric light for the stereopticon views, and fastening a string or wire in the right place, slipped away at a safe distance and blew the steam whistle. The pro fessor was of course interrupted, and after waiting a short spell for the noise to stop, remarked that he couldn't talk against a steam whistle. The whistle kept up for several minutes, or until Chester Sluite could get out of the hall, climb to-the roof and ston it. The I boys in the meantime had made them- selves scarce. It was sport for t he boys but might have been a serious matter for the audience. It needed but the cry of fire to have caused a panic, and in the crowded condition of the hall the consequences would, have been fearful. Repairs at the Locks. A representative of the Times-Mountaineer visited the locks at the Cas cades last week. He learned that some ! lime since the valve on the south side of the canal at the lower gate, that is ! used to drain the lower basin, became loose, and when the power was turned , on to close it, the pressure was so great that Ihe valve, a ponderous mass of steel weighing some three tons, was ; split and totally ruined. It will have to be replaced wilh a new one that will lie ordered rrom tne Hiast, ana wnicn will probably not arrive for several months. In the meantime, Lieut. Morris is having the aqueduct on the south side closed with timbers so that the basin can be emptied by-the use of ihe valve on the north side, and when this is completed the locks can be op erated, though more time will be re quired in passing boats through. Lecture Sunday Evening. Dr. Hines will deliver a lecture on Sunday evening, at 7:45, in the M. E. church, on "Christian Citizenship," as illustrated in the lives of President McKinley, and Hon. J. N.
