Workmen commenced Wednesday morning on the new residence for Dr. Watt. M. A. Cook has the contract for building and is assisted by R. H. Howell ana A. O. Hershey. Mr. J. R. Mead, who is stopping at Mr. John Parkei's with his family for the summer, made a flying trip to Port land last Saturday, going down .on the early morning train and returning in the evening. H. F. Davidson has sold his interest in the livery business to Win. Lanaille and moved to his farm last week. E.L. Rood, who has been living on Mr. Da vidson's place, has rented the place of Charley Ross. . , ' Luther Miller and Frank Davenport, jr., returned from Loft lake Monday. They report a good deal of rain at the lake.. Huckleberries are plentiful, and many campers are gathering a good supply. of the berries. E. D. Calkins returned from Klick itat county Sunday. Monday he drove to the head of the Improvement Co.'s ditch, taking up Frank Davenport and daughter. Miss Davenport will super intend the boarding house. The literary club, which met at H. C. Bateham'8, was well attended, a.bout forty Koing out from town. . The grounds were -well lit up by bonfires until 9:30, when the gathering broke up and said good night. , George T. Prather has been appoint- ( d agent of the Hamburg-American Steamship Co. at Hood River. This will prove a great convenience to our citizens who may have business in Eu rope or who wish to take a pleasure trip across uie waters. Underwood Bros, of White Salmon are supplying Hood River with a su perior lot of watermelons. They have two acres in melons and will have about 2,000 choice melons. They find sale for them at Cascade Locks, Chen owith and Hood River. . , The Hood River fair will be late this year on account of the lateness of the season. Apples seem to be slow about coloring and maturing. It is thought best by some to hold the fair in Octo ber, in time to get our exhibit placed in the Portland exposition during the last week. "When in Rome do as the Romans do," says the old proverb, and we might add, when in Hood River do as the Hood Riverites do. Call at Colum bia Nursery and see what an assort ment of fruit trees and plants can be had for, a home garden. The best is none too good for the fruit growers. The O. R. . N.' Co's timetable for Hood River is us follows; Westbound overland, 5:50 a. m.; eastbound over land, 9:45 p. m.; local passenger east bound, 11:12 a. in.; local passenger westbound, 8:23 p. m. Mr. Hayes has two acres of land bought of Oscar Stranabup, on the old base ball grounds. It was supposed at one time unit this land was good lor nothing without water, but Mr. Hayes has proved that it is the best of land for garden truck. He had a fine lot of sweet corn, beans and potatoes grown without irrigation. He has cabbage, pursnips, cucumbers, peanuts, melons, etc., that are doing well. He has the peach melon and lemon melon and a snake-like melon that is quite a cu riosity. His exhibit at the fair will beat some of us old timers. Black woodpeckers are destroying a great many apples in the orchards on the East Side. Chris Dethman em ploys a boy in his orchard to shoot the birds and pays 5 cents apiece. United effort should be made to destroy these birds during the breeding season. They peck into and spoil the green winter apples as well as the ripe summer and rail apples, and are more destructive in some orchards than the codlin moth.. . Grant Evans was fishing in Hood river, above the bridge, last Tuesday, when he caught a salmon on his hook. Bffore he could haul in his line .the salmon escaped and his hook caught a trout, ana uetore ne couia secure the trout it managed to wriggle off, and bis hook caught a white fish before he hud hauled in his line. And it wasn't a very good day for fishing, either. A band of sheep were reported on the head of Neal creek Monday. A com mittee ot citizens' from the East Side went up on that day and notified the herders that they would have to move. A man whs sent .again on Wednesday to see if they had moved, and if not they will receive some help to move their camps from the citizens of the East Side. . A committee of gentlemen from La fayette college were in Hood River for several daysluring the week, looking over the advantages presented for the removal of the college to this place. Other places will be visited for the same purpose and their decision on a location will be made next March or April. The committee was favorably impressed with Hood River. A social will be given by the mem bers of the Congregational church on Friday evening, Sept. 11 1 h, at the res idence of Rev. J. L. Heishner. Re freshments will be served, including paneukes baked by a committee of three gentlemen. Only a charge of 15 ceuts for everything. Let everybody come. . . , Messrs. A. B. Jones and J. W. Mor ton, after their trip throutrh the coun ties of Multnomah, Washington, Yam hill and Tillamook, which is generally considered as good as any part of Ore gon, say they found no place as pros perous or as desirable as Hood River, and they are better, satisfied than ever to make their homes here. Tonilinson of Mt. Hood was at Lost lake during the thunder storm of lust week. He says the elec trical display was grand and the peals of thunder terrific. A heavy rain added to the discomfort of the campers. Messrs. Deitrick and Vantliirs, who purchased the Grahani place, left yes terday for their homes in Sun Fran cisco. Yesterday he was better. Mr. Robert Howard returned to Port land last Monday, after spending a few weeks at Mr.- Joliu Parker's. Mrs. O. P. McFall came up from Portland on- the local yesterday and will remain at Hood River., Mr. H. Hehn is back again at his post of duty in the depot after his month's vacation. Mr. George Udell came up Wednes day from his home in Clackamas county. Miss Ida Foss began her fall term of school last Monday at Mill Creek, The Dalles.- . ; - Wm. R. , New Desks. The Frankton school has received its new seats and the same were placed in position last Saturday by W. J. (lamp bell and W. H. Perry. The old home made desks that have done service in this school district, some of them for 25 years, have at last given way to more modern styles, and the new desks are of the latest Improved pattern. We are informed try Capt. Coe that some of these old desks were made for the school house that was built in 187) on the southwest corner of Paradise farm, where is situated the old grave yard. A wording to his record, '.'A. B. Lillie commenced school in th new school house, June 27, 1871." The first school in Hood River valley was commenced May 14, 1807; Miss Catharine Aubert, teacher; salary, $80 per quarter and board. - Real Estate Sales. John N.
